Chococurb Classic Subscription December 2018 Review

Seattle Chocolate - Hot Buttered Rum Milk Chocolate Truffle Bar, 2.5 oz - Retail Value $4.50

Initially, I didn't think I was going to like this bar. I prefer dark chocolate and rum with chocolate just sounded like an odd combination.

It is very sweet but slightly reminiscent of Rum Lifesavers (odd flex, right?). I do like it and because it's so sweet, I can savor it one square at a time.

Besides, do you see how cute the inside of their packaging is? Their attention to detail is off the charts and putting a little girl's story on their packaging is just the sweetest.

Theo Chocolates - Gingerbread Spice Milk Chocolate Bar, 3 oz - Retail Value $3.99

This candy bar tastes like a molasses cookie - the spices and the scent initially evoke that thought and the taste follows through.

The milk chocolate isn't overly sweet and it plays well with the spices. If you're a fan of spiced chocolate, I think you'll like this bar!

Vosges - Bronte Pistachio Cherry Milk Chocolate Bar, 3 oz - Retail Value $8.00

Vosges Chocolate was my first foray into artisanal chocolate and I find that it really lives up to its reputation. They produce solid products with unique and interesting flavors that really pack a punch.

Their packaging is beautiful as well...as you can see!

I enjoyed this bar, even though I'm not a massive fan of milk chocolate. Too often, milk chocolate can be very 'one note,' with little depth or flavor other than sweet. This bar had some texture from the pistachio and a hint of cherry flavor to give it more interest. The flavor isn't overwhelmingly fruity, so I think this bar will be a hit with most chocolate lovers!

ChocoPeppermint Truffle Cremes in Milk Chocolate, No 23 0.8 oz. - Buy 10 oz for $11.70

I really enjoyed these truffles. They were very smooth, not too sweet, and had a hint of minty coolness. These are the classier version of York Peppermint Patties!

Joe Chocolates - Frosted Peppermint Dark Chocolate, 2.5 oz. - Buy a pack of 3 for $21.00

Joe Chocolates contain coffee beans for a bit of a punchy snack. Eating one bag of this chocolate is equivalent to two cups of coffee! This flavor, Frosted Peppermint Dark Chocolate, is only offered once a year around Christmas time. I really appreciate when brands (like this one) use sunflower lecithin rather than soy: it makes the brand more accessible for those with allergies.

If you don't like coffee you're not going to like these but if you do like a cuppa...I think you're going to fall in love. This tastes like a peppermint mocha and is packed full of texture. These would be great for times when you need a caffeine kick but don't have access to coffee.

Fran's - Gray Salt Caramels in Dark Chocolate 0.9 oz - Buy a pack of 7 for $15.50

Salted caramels with dark chocolate is my love language...if that is a love language. I love the contrast of the sweet, toasty caramel with the salt, and then the hit of bitter chocolate.

These were an all-around win for me. They were everything salted caramels should be. There is very little room to hide with such a simple flavor profile, and Fran's nailed it. My only regret is that there were only three!

The Verdict: I have always enjoyed my Chococurb boxes. One thing that I appreciate is that they source unique, smaller brand chocolate and make it accessible to everyone! I live in an area that doesn't offer many specialty candy shops, so if I want something unique it can be difficult to find. With Chococurb, you get unique delivered straight to your door! I would appreciate more dark chocolate, of course, but I think this was a great mixture of products that most people would enjoy around the holiday season with the various flavors of peppermint, gingerbread, and hot buttered rum!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, order by today to receive this box by Christmas!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $33.00 + free shipping, which means that each of the 6 items in the box (I'm counting the Dilettante truffles as one item) has an average cost of $5.50.

Bekki first discovered subscription boxes in 2014 and they quickly took over her life! (Not quite, but pretty close.) She started with POPSUGAR Must Have, then moved to Little Lace Box, Birchbox, Hamptons Lane...the rest was history. Her favorite product find is Beekman 1802 Fudge (so, so good) and her favorite boxes are Birchbox and Hamptons Lane...but she's always looking for a new subscription to try!

has anyone heard about what’s going to happen to the prepaid boxes after Chococurb close?

I actually emailed them through cratejoy a month or so ago. The response was they are filing for bankruptcy and people would have to file a claim to receive any refund from liquidation. I decided to file a claim with my bank instead.

It’s interesting that five of the six items in this particular box are either from Seattle or the immediate vicinity (I think Vosges Chocolate is located in Chicago?). As someone who works in downtown Seattle I can purchase almost all of these items at local drugstores or shops directly. Aren’t there other regional chocolatiers that could be featured for the sake of variety?

I agree. Also, for $40, I’d much rather go buy several artisan chocolate bars and save $20. Nice box, but not the best value.

I did notice that these were mostly brands based in Seattle! Most of these are unique for me, since I’m in California, but I can see how a subscriber in the Seattle area may have wanted more variety.
