The Zakka Kit October 2018 Review

The Zakka Kit October 2018 - 4 - ZK

This month the theme is Edo Cats! At first glance, these items to appear to have quirky and cute kitties all over them! Although I'm a corgi enthusiast, my mother-in-law is a self-proclaimed “crazy cat lady” who works in an office, so there’s a solid chance I’ll be gifting her some of these nifty items to spruce up her desk!

From the card:

Edo is the old name for Tokyo, as well as the peaceful creative period in Japan between 1603 and 1868. Edo cat illustrations were made famous by Ukiyo-e artists such as Kuniyoshi and Hokusai.

Edo Fabric Pouch by Yamako

This fabric pouch comes in one of eight different Edo or Cat designs and uses traditional dying techniques (hand painted cotton dyed with natural persimmon juice or indigo dye) which the card indicates makes the fabric itself stronger and naturally water repellant! It’s perfect for storing any small items, even cosmetics, and I could even see using it as a clutch if the right outfit presented itself. It measures about 7” x 4” and has a top zipper closure. I love the pattern that I received!

Edo Cats Postcard by Gakken Sta:Ful

This postcard features UkiyoE-style Edo cats with gold embossing. I think the image is pretty enough to frame and display as desk art, or you could always jot a thoughtful note on the back and send it to your favorite kitty lover.

Cat Notecards by Classiky x Mihoko Seki

I received five notecards, each measuring about 2.5” x 3.5” – about half the size of a standard index card. I’m not sure that I’d call these notecards, and instead, I plan to use them as gift tags. These beautifully crafted cards are printed on thick, textured Japanese paper and are certain to make a gift look extra special!

Sou Sou Edo Patterns Notebook by Gakken Sta:Ful

How chic is this little notebook? It’s very thin, has lined pages, and features a handstitched binding. This is the perfect size to keep in your handbag, measuring about 7” x 5”. I always like to have a pen and paper with me, and love that this notebook has such a thin profile it won’t add bulk to even my sleekest everyday bags!

Edo Cats Washi Tape by Classiky x Mihoko Seki

Meow! This brown features mysterious cats with vintage accessories. I’m excited to add this to my growing collection of Washi Tape – I love to use it for gift wrapping, crafting, or just to add an unexpected touch to something that needs a bit of tape!

Double-Sided Vintage Brown Pen by Mitsubishi

This brown pen is a perfect complement to the notecards, notebook, and gift tags – it even coordinates with the washi tape! I love how this theme feels vintage, yet fresh and that all of the components can be mixed and matched for adorable desk décor.

Here’s the pen swatched on a piece of plain white paper.

Verdict: This month’s Zakka Kit was well curated around the edo cat theme, without overdoing the cat stuff! I think that each item was practical, yet beautiful and unique. Although I couldn’t find it online, the pouch alone was worth the paid value of the box to me!

I agree! The pouch is beautiful and I would definitely pay twenty dollars for it alone.
