Sugarfina Trick Box - Box Review Side

Sugarfina is a gourmet candy company that offers everything from Dom Perignon champagne gummy bears that have a cult following to birthday cake caramels and chocolate bacon pretzel bites.

They recently offered a Trick or Treat Mystery Bag, a $40 mystery bag with a promised value of at least $75 of Sugarfina sweets.

FYI - this box is no longer available for purchase, but they seem to offer a mystery bag about twice a year.

Inside of this envelope was a hand-written note, which I thought was lovely! We also received more information about Sugarfina and a collaboration they did with The Honest Company.

Parisian Pineapples, Large Candy Cube - Retail Value $18

I should probably preface this review by saying that I LOVE Sugarfina. I am big on the Sugarfina bandwagon, but my wallet doesn't believe in spending all of my money on sweets. Because of that, opening up the box to this MASSIVE cube of Parisian Pineapples felt so luxurious! These pineapples do not have a typical gummy texture- there isn't really any resistance as you chew if that makes sense. There was a tropical pineapple flavor that built up the more you chewed, and overall I would eat these again, but they aren't in my top favorites.

Champagne Bubbles, Large Candy Cube - Retail Value $18

The champagne candy options from Sugarfina are super popular, and these champagne bubbles are my favorite out of the champagne options! There is a great contrast in texture with the crunchy nonpareils surrounding the firm center gummy, and I like the light flavor of these. I can’t say if they taste like “the finest champagne” (especially since I haven’t had fine champagne?), but these are definitely really tasty and fun. I am a happy camper to have a big cube of these babies!

These frogs pair an apple gummy with a vanilla foam base, and while the texture is a bit unique I really enjoyed these. I thought the apple flavor tasted like real apples, and the contrast of the foam at the bottom was a neat texture element. If you’re weird with textures these probably won't be for you, but feel free to pass your extras along to me.

Champagne Bears, Small Candy Cube - Retail Value $8.50

I would say these are the most popular Sugarfina offering, but they aren’t my favorite. These are made with real Dom Perignon champagne, and they taste almost like a sprite, only without the carbonation and not as sweet (I feel like I just described champagne, but I have never really actually drank champagne so I can’t be sure). I prefer my candy to have a bit more flavor or texture pizazz, so these are a pass for me. These definitely would make amazing stocking stuffers or small gifts this holiday season, (though I will say my favorite holiday candy from Sugarfina are the reindeer noses, aka the gingerbread cookies in adorable packaging).

PB&J Caramels, Small Candy Cube - Retail Value $7.50

These are really the only candy out of the box that left me scratching my head- they are described as “caramels coated in artisan peanut butter and dipped and strawberry jelly white chocolate.” Honestly, these just have a bit too much going on. The caramel had a nice chewy texture that wasn’t sticky, and I do think these had the essence of a PB & J, but I wouldn’t seek these out.

Princess Pearls, Small Candy Cube - Retail Value $7.50

I have seen the Princess Pearls before, and I always thought they were just pretty candy coated chocolate. BOY WAS I WRONG, and I mourn the years I could have spent occasionally enjoying these when I could afford them. These are described as a crispy rice cereal dipped in milk chocolate and finished in a pearlescent candy shell, and I think the best way to explain the flavor and texture is if a whopper and rice crispy treat had a baby. They’re amazing, and I could throw this entire cube back with no issues if I didn’t need to fit things like protein and vegetables into my diet.

The Verdict: I loved this mystery bag! The PB&J caramels were the only true miss for me, and I think enjoying all of the three big cubes makes this box a big winner. I will say that I thought shipping was a bit slow- I ordered on October 29 and this arrived on November 8. While that's not the craziest wait in the world, it feels long considering that this mystery bag description talked about the Halloween season and I am now fully in Thanksgiving mode! I think these bags should have been ready to ship when the deal was announced, but ultimately I got some delicious candy at a pretty good deal. Sugarfina promised a value of at least $75, and by my math, the total retail value comes to $77.50. I am happy with that!

The Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? No, this box is now sold out.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $50.95 ($40 + $10.95 shipping) and I calculated a value of $77.50. That means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Parisian Pineapples: $11.83
  • Champagne Bubbles: $11.83
  • Apple Frogs: $11.83
  • Champagne Bears: $5.58
  • PB&J Caramels: $4.93
  • Princess Pearls: $4.93

What do you think of the Sugarfina Trick or Treat Mystery Bag? Did your mystery bag contain different goodies?

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

I received the exact same mystery bag. I ordered it on 10/31 and received it on 11/6. I didn’t hear anything about a shipping delay. I added a few smaller items to receive free shipping. I wish the frogs & pineapples were smaller boxes, as neither one was very appealing to me. They both taste great, just aren’t flavors I would seek out. I think I would rather have more varieties of candy and smaller boxes to get to try more. I am waiting patiently until 12/1 to open my Sugarfina advent calendar which will be perfect for that!

I got the advent calendar to try a bunch of different varieties. Then I’ll order a couple boxes of my faves. I think I would’ve loved all of these though 🙂

I wish I’d known it wasn’t going to be Halloween candy. I would have bought this to give as gifts.

Im shocked anyone would get a delivery today since it’s a holiday! Im still waiting for mine to arrive but I was hoping to receive halloween themed candy. Oh well I love candy so any sale from them is a winner for me!;)

I got a shipment from USPS yesterday too. It must be part of their special hours like how they deliver some packages on Sunday (for Amazon especially) too.

My pineapples were one big clump after the arranged top and front ones.

I totally forgot I had even ordered this until it arrived today. I also received a large box of the dark chocolate sea salt in lieu of the Parisian pineapples, which I do not mind. At all.
Unfortunately, I do not like champagne nor anything champagne flavored. But, I’m guessing those will be easy to either gift or trade…
In all, a good mix of products. I’d re-purchase

I don’t think the bubbles taste like champagne. They kind of taste like raspberry/fruity to me. Now the champagne bears do taste like actual champagne to me. I love both! I wish I would of bought this deal now for xmas gifts.

If anyone want a gourmet candy advent calendar similar to Sugarfina (but Canadian), Squish candies still has some available (although I think the vegan one is sold out.) https://www.squishcandies.com/en_us/products/4025-24-Days-Of-Candy—Advent-Calendar

Mine cost about forty dollars with shipping and the exchange rate. Haven’t received it yet (it just shipped), but all American boxes ship by this week and Canadian boxes ship next week. I bought the Sugarfina advent calendar too so I can compare them!

For the record, the only similarities between champagne and sprite are that they are both carbonated beverages.

There are lots of comments about the shipping delay on MSAs other post about this box. I’m personally really disappointed that Sugarfina chose not to let customers know about the shipping delay & only let us know that there was an “out of stock” item they were waiting on IF we contacted them. Also frustrating to see people being treated differently by customer service because of this issue — some people got “upgraded” shipping, some people were offered a bonus item, & some people even got a refund. In the feedback survey that Sugarfina emailed to me, I told them that this unequal treatment made me feel devalued as a customer.

The further issue, in my opinion, is that this was a mystery bag. It didn’t HAVE to have any particular item(s) in it, so why couldn’t they just substitute something else in for the out of stock item(s) & get the bags to us on time?

I received: large gummy frogs, large champagne bubbles, large dark chocolate sea salt caramels, small pb&j caramels, small princess pearls, small champagne bears.

The champagne bubbles taste more like pear to me. (Juicy Pear is my favorite flavor of Jelly Belly, so I’m not complaining!)

Ohhhhh I would have loved the dark chocolate caramels too. I got the pineapples. I saw the comments on the other post (and that’s the only reason I didn’t contact CS to ask since I knew others were waiting also). It is unfair. I got a small cube as a gift with purchase from Birchbox that came with a code to send a free sampler pack to someone. The website was very difficult to figure out how to send it and guess what….recipient never got it. I got a survey for that experience too and shared my feelings and that I never got tracking and it was never sent (I did get a confirmation email that it went through supposedly though) and they never even contacted me. I doubt anyone read the survey. Oh well.

Marion

I got the same Birchbox sample/candy drop! I actually sent the candy drop to my sister mayyyybe a week before I ordered the mystery box (I did order that Oct 27), and she got her shipping notification on her candy the same day I got a shipping notification about my mystery box (but my box still did not actually ship out until 2 days after I got the notif, & that was with “upgraded” shipping). I don’t know if she’s received her sample yet!

AAC

I received the same exact selections. @MSA and @Liz Cadman – can you guys add these in swaps? Thanks!

I got this exact box too!!! Which really makes me question the shipping delay since I also got that as well! With the halloween advertising I was also expecting one of the Halloween offerings. Eh well not the worst mystery box I ever got so I’m content.

The shipping charge is what always keeps me from buying. I can’t justify $75 on gummy candy when I can go to Big Lots and get a pound of Haribo for $5 haha

Reply ButtonReply

Aarjullor

I think the same thing about Albanese candy. I can buy a pound of gummy bears at Sprouts for $3, when they’re on sale. I’ve eaten and enjoyed sugarfina. I LOVE the royal roses. But, albanese gummies are so good, and come in 12 flavors. They have a ton of different candy online, and any that I’ve tried have been yum. Sugarfina is just too $$$ for what it is. I’m still totally bummed I missed the mystery bags last year. Major fomo when I saw people’s hauls on the boards.

Pilar

Yep! Also sometimes Meijer sale Sugarfina for real cheap.

Reply ButtonReply

Shelli

Meijer’s sells Sugarfina???!! OMG I have to check out mine now!!

LB

I just added on a small cube and sampler pack to get free shipping…and more candy. LOL

There’s no comparison whatsoever. Please don’t even compare Haribo to Sugarfina… it’s quality over quantity here! 😉

Reply ButtonReply

Amber

I think Haribo is great quality. Either way, I would be pretty mad at myself if I spent this much money on something that I could slam in one sitting. I just can’t do it. I have no gummy self control.
