PUR Cosmetics $18 Mystery Grab Bag October 2018 Review

Eye Polish in Caviar,

Eye Polish in Caviar, Full-Size! Retail Value $26

This is such an interesting take on eyeshadow - I am not sure what I can compare it to! This is essentially a liquid eyeshadow that can be used as a base (it has primer in it!) for other eyeshadows, on its own, or as a top coat for a metallic sheen! The shade Caviar is a brown with green undertones and gold shimmer, and Pur even included a silicone applicator brush to get a seamless application.

Fully Charged Mascara, Full-Size! Retail Value $22

This is described as an anti-aging mascara, and I will be honest and say I am not sure what makes a mascara anti-aging? That being said, I am happy that this provided length and great separation to my lashes, and I was able to avoid clumps with relative ease. This isn’t my holy grail mascara, but it definitely does a good job.

Chateau Kisses Lip Gloss in Foxy,

Chateau Kisses Lip Gloss in Foxy, Full-Size! Retail Value $18 (found here for $7)

It takes a lot for a lip gloss to impress me, and this didn’t make the cut. I thought that it was a bit too sticky for my liking, but the real issue for me is that this accentuated the dry patches I had on my lips (even though I had worn a lip mask before applying!), making it a bit uncomfortable. Also, this is apparently a plumping lip gloss, but I didn’t see any plump results—there definitely was no burning or tingling I usually associate with a lip plumping product. Foxy is a sheer orange-red that is bright without being in your face, and while it isn’t my personal favorite color I thought that this would be a pretty universal shade.

Chateau Cheeks Cream Blush in Coy, Full-Size! Retail Value $18 (found here for $10)

Coy is a soft nude apricot blush that gives a really natural flush of color, which I appreciate as a non-blush wearer. I applied this with a damp beauty blender, and I think that is the way to go for the cream formula. This blended in well and looked natural.

Contour Blending Brush

Contour Blending Brush – Retail Value $24

I can never have too many makeup brushes, so I am always happy to receive more. This one had densely packed bristles that are super soft while still being firm, and I think the way I will be using it is to blend bronzer into my hairline and jawlines (that is really the only contour I do, as I don’t think I look well with contoured cheeks).

Here are the swatches. From left to right we have the blush, eye polish, and lip gloss.

Here is the look I did using the items from the box. Other than proving light foundation coverage using my shape tape concealer and a damp beauty blender, everything else is from the box. I had class after doing my makeup, so I didn’t want a look that was too dramatic. I used the Aesthetica thin eyeliner brush from the May Boxycharm set to apply the eye polish as an eyeliner. I loved the thin but defined line I was able to get, and once this set (after about a minute) it did not budge until I was ready to take my makeup off. Next, I bounced my beauty blender into the cream blush before blending it into the apples of my cheeks. I did two coats of the mascara and finished with the lip gloss.

The Verdict: If you like PUR Cosmetics, the value of these mystery bags is hard to beat! Even if PUR isn’t your favorite, I still think this was a great mystery bag that allowed you to create a full look. I think the eye polish is really neat, and I wouldn’t mind trying it out in other shades. Value-wise, PUR promised a retail value of $108, and by my math, that is the exact full retail value of these five items. Even taking the sale prices into account, this is still a great deal.

The Wrap Up:

Can You still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, as of publication, this box is still available!

Value Breakdown: For $24.95 ($18+ $6.95 shipping), this bag has a value of $108. That means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Eye Polish: $6
  • Mascara: $5.08
  • Lip Gloss: $4.16
  • Blush: $4.16
  • Blending Brush: $5.54

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

I loved the $40 one more, this one was a surprising let down. I love the eyeshadow though, and would jump at the chance to try it in a purple.
