Pet Treater November 2018 Review
There’s not a traditional information card with this subscription so there’s not always a stated theme, but you will occasionally see some commonalities running throughout the box contents. This month, I guess it was somewhat fall-related, but then Nyx doesn’t care about themes. Also, they got a new box style recently:
There isn’t an item list with this subscription (it is my understanding some items may vary), but you usually get a picture of a dog.
There are sometimes advertisements in the box, as well. They may or may not relate to the box contents. There was an excessive number of papers this month.
Skout’s Honor Probiotic Deodorizer (lavender, 8 fl oz) – Retail Value $12.99
Nyx isn’t too stinky because she gets baths with medicated shampoo every two weeks for a skin condition. Actually, she is pretty stable right now and I’m hesitant to upset the balance. I need to find out if you can use this on cats, though, because Mr. Kitty could potentially benefit from it (and he’s wearing an e-collar right now so he can’t lick it off himself). This is supposed to help with itching, hot spots, fur loss, etc., though I imagine it would take some time to really start working.
Unified Pet Hackberry Smoked Chicken Jerky (6 oz) – Buy 4 Bags for $29.65
This is made and sourced in the USA and is free from additives and preservatives. I could only find it currently for sale on Amazon, but it was sold by Amazon (not a third party seller) so I don’t think it is a discontinued product. Although there are only two reviews, they are both quite positive. Single-ingredient treats like this are a good option if your dog has food sensitivities.
Custom Kerchief
A lot of times, you’ll get a seasonal kerchief from Pet Treater. These are big enough to put around a thick Rottweiler neck (which you can see below; I got Nyx to model this). They are printed on inexpensive material and I don’t get the sense they’d stay in good shape for repeated washings, but they’re good for a few pictures and/or a day or two of wear.
Emmy’s Gourmet Canine Creations Leaf Cookie – Estimated Value $1.35
Most months, you’ll get an exclusive Emmy’s cookie design. These are usually not available on the Emmy’s site, but their individual cookies are typically priced the same. This one is a leaf. I like that Pet Treater has partnered with a small business to offer some custom items. (I also like that Emmy’s treats are reasonably priced; I have seen some dog bakeries that charge like $5 or $6 for what is essentially the same item.)
Vegalicious Healthy Popped Snacks Lentil Blend (1 oz) – Retail Value $2.69
This brand pops up in Pet Treater from time to time. What is great about these treats is they are grain-free and also free of animal proteins. So, like, even Nyx can eat them (the list of things Nyx *can’t* eat is quite long so we are always happy to find safe treats). These can also be used as a food topper.
Vegalicious Healthy Popped Snacks Pea Medley (1 oz) – Retail Value $2.69
Nyx can also have these; they have essentially the same ingredients but substitute yellow pea flour for lentil flour (there is also some potato starch). Nyx doesn’t get treats very often so I’ve kept this bag sealed for now so they are fresh for when we finish off the others.
Petrageous Designs Playrageous Rocko the Raccoon 12” Toy – Retail Value $4.50
This appears to be a closeout item, although I don’t really think that matters for dog toys since they don’t have expiration dates. As usual, Nyx set about finding the most vulnerable point on the toy and attacking it. In this case, it was one of the ears. For a non-heavy-chewer, this is probably just fine. If your dog is destructive, though, you should keep watch while he/she is playing.
Rope with Handle
This did not have a tag or brand or any identifying information whatsoever, and my Google image search did not turn up any matches. This is a relatively large rope toy with a plastic handle. The handle makes this very convenient for tugging, which is something Nyx loves. When I let her just have the toy, though, she immediately set about chewing on the handle. Because that’s just how she is.
Nyx is sad she can’t be a turkey tester but I’m a vegetarian and she has inflammatory bowel disease and can’t eat turkey. She was very happy to try a treat, though.
Verdict: There were 8 items in the October 2018 Pet Treater box, for an average value of about $3.12. I couldn’t find everything online (some closeouts, custom items, etc.) so I didn’t try to calculate a total value. I feel that the contents of the box this month are representative of what you’d receive in a typical month. I think the toys were size-appropriate for an 80+ pound dog but would also work for 50-60 pound dogs. (Pet Treater is generally quite good about sending size-appropriate toys.) I was quite happy there were some treats Nyx could have, and she did have fun with the toys.
