Mama June even signs off on the packaging – and can I say that as an original viewer of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo I was familiar with the old Mama June, not the new and improved Mama June: From Not to Hot version of herself!

Our Fall 2018 Review

So, I’m going to be totally honest. I didn’t have high expectations for this box – I used to watch some of these reality shows and vividly recall scenes where June’s family ate cold hot dogs right out of the package as a snack – frankly (pun intended), the stuff of my nightmares.

When I opened the box, I was immediately taken aback by its professional quality and curation. This glossy magazine was neatly placed on top of the box contents, containing high-quality photos and accurate descriptions of the items included, as well as some personal notes from June herself. I think I might be in for a treat!

Exclusive! Mama June’s Southern Treats Dish Towel

This was the only non-edible item in the box, a thin branded dish towel. It’s pretty large, measuring about 26” square. I’m not sure what it’s made out of, but it seems to be a thin cotton blended that will dry quickly. I probably won't put this on display in my home, but it certainly will come in handy. One can always use another dishcloth!

Exclusive! Mama June’s Loose-Leaf Ginger Peach Tea

When you think of the south, you’re likely to think of Peaches – and this theme will carry throughout the box. This ginger peach loose leaf tea smells and tastes wonderful. It’s black tea based which is my preferred tea and I taste only subtle hints of the peach and ginger. There is an included recipe card featuring this blend (pictured below) suggesting that you make a cocktail out of it using vodka, lemonade, and some fresh fruit – similar to a peach Arnold Palmer drink. I also love that this little tin came with its own teabag, perfect for a use or two before tossing out and great for those who don’t have a way to brew loose leaf tea on hand.

Pecan Praline by Dillon Candy – Buy 20 for $35.00

I was in my late 20’s before I ever tasted a praline – but since I was in New Orleans and uncovered that majestic treat I have had quite a fondness for them. This is one of the best that I’ve had, I love that it was individually wrapped and they only included one (I have zero willpower). It’s buttery, has a very strong and wonderful pecan taste, and a smooth and creamy texture. It’s a very satisfying treat, I feel well worth the 130 calories that it packs! For scale, this praline measures around 3” in diameter.

Exclusive! Mama June’s Peach Crisp Mix

This mix contains only a few ingredients – whole grains, rolled oats, and nuts. To make the crisp, you simply assemble with a few cups of peaches and a stick of butter and then bake for about 20 minutes, leaving you with a fantastic dessert. I do wish the recipe card included her crisp mix ratios so that I could remake this time and again. It was that good!

Here are some photos of it assembled. I think it tasted just as good as it looked and had a really “oat” taste to it which I really loved.

Bland Farms Sweet Vidalia Onion Petals

Whelp, these are delicious. They are essentially chips made from sweet Vidalia onion petals and are baked to perfection. They are crispy, light, and flavorful – tasting very much like an onion ring. They’d be amazing on top of a green bean casserole. They aren’t a health food, even though they are baked. These treats pack about 130 calories and 8g of fat per serving (the bag contains 4 servings of about 20 pieces)!

Bacon Heir’s Pork Clouds in Garlic Thyme (0.7 oz) - Buy 6 for $8.00

I'm sorry, I just can't do it. I don't eat anything with the first ingredient of Pork Skin. My husband ate these up and said "wow these are really good, you should try one" but it's a mental thing with me and I just can't do it. I can speak to the smell though, they do have a heavy herb scent and look to be light and crispy. I'm sure they're great if Pork Rinds are your thing! Also, at 100 calories and 12g protein, 6g fat, and 0g carbs these are an excellent snack for those of you on Keto or other low-carb diets.

Bacon Heir’s Pork Panko (3.0 oz) - Buy 3 for $8.00

*Please see above* Seriously though, for those on low carb diets, these would likely make a great alternative to traditional breadcrumbs. My husband does all of the cooking, so I don’t want these in my house (he will certainly sneak them into my food because he knows that pork rinds give me the heebie-jeebies) so I am going to pass them onto a friend.

Finally, a non-pig product! So these peach cookies are REALLY sweet. They remind you almost of an Italian wedding cookie, a sweet flaky butter cookie ball coated in powdered sugar. The difference is the really strong, peach syrup flavor – the good news is that a single cookie is satisfying enough to curb your sugar craving so that you don't turn into a butter cookie ball yourself!

Exclusive! Mama June’s Recipe Cards

June has a ton of recipes on her website including the cards pictured above:

I think it’s great that she included recipes for some of the ingredients included in the box. I do wish she either provided a way to purchase the exclusive ingredients on her site or at least provided you with the recipe to make from scratch or a recommendation for a comparable product available for purchase.

Verdict: This is a perfect example of why you should give everyone and everything a chance and not go in with a preconceived notion. I was pleasantly surprised with the curation, quality, and usefulness of Mama June's Southern Treats. I’d put it right up there with some of the other popular baking and food subscriptions. I like that it’s quarterly, I feel like that will ensure these boxes continue to deliver solid curations.

As for value, I think it was just OK and that there should have been at least one bigger, or hero item to pack a bang. At $39.95 for the box, I received 8 items (not including the recipe cards that are available for free online) breaking each one down to about $4.99. I don’t know that I would have paid $4.99 out of pocket for any of these induvial items, except for the peach crisp mix and the loose-leaf tea.

The tea towel looks like an o

Sorry tablet is acting up…but the tea towel is the same material as old time cloth diapers. Southern women always turned them in to dish towels after their children were potty trained…we had them!

All I could think when I saw this was sketti in a ziploc bag. I was so scared. Lol

I’ve been curious what was in this box. Thanks for the review. I like every item. The pork panko seems really interesting.

I love pork rinds! They are a popular menu item at a local brewery, and you get a huge pile of plain pork rinds, and a side of hot sauce, and it’s just perfect. This looks like a good snack box!

Google up the stuff around Mama June and Mark McDaniel and what her daughter Anna said when the story was circulating. Hard pass on supporting MJ, ever. Southern food is great, needs a better spokeswoman though!
