The front of the info card includes an except about the founder of Hoolono Remedies and thoughts on giving and receiving.

Go Native November 2018 tumeric tonic Go Native November 2018 tumeric tonic backk Go Native November 2018 tumeric tonic info

Ho Olono Remedies Tumeric Tonic, 2 oz - Retail Value $9.00

I could smell this tonic through the box! Potent is an understatement. I had to do a little research on my own for its use because the paper and the item's website just described it as being used for "maintenance". While that is not super helpful in terms of being deturmericve, turmeric tonics do have a multitude of health applications. I tried half a capful and found it to be SUPER spicy and flavorful, and almost unbearable. It is made of turmeric, ginger, garlic, and chili pepper. If it truly helps with colds as the founder proclaims, it will be worth the incredibly overwhelming taste. As someone who has been trying to add a rotation of more natural medicines to her cabinet, I am willing to give it a shot.

Ho Olono Remedies Laukahi Salve, 1 oz. - Retail Value $7.50

This little tin of salve is also from Hoolono Natural Remedies. Although it is used for bug bites and abrasions, I found it worked well on my dry knuckles and cuticles. The smell is very green and leafy, but mild and not medicinal. It is in a beeswax base and that smell also is notable. I feel like this will make a great all-around natural salve.

Mamalani Hōano La`au Facial Powder - Retail Value $24.00

This face powder is my favorite piece this month! The smell is lavender and sandalwood, meaning it is heavenly. I find loose powders a little messy for facial application but with a brush instead of the puff, this would be completely do-able. I also liked it as a general body powder (it will be great for summer usage) and although it wasn't mentioned in the product info at all, it made an absolutely incredible dry shampoo powder for me. I am blonde and it did not show at all on my roots, but if you have dark hair this might be less feasible for you. The bamboo packaging was a nice touch too and looks gorgeous on my dressing table.

Go Native November 2018 tea kit Go Native November 2018 tea bag

Kihene Mamaki Tea, 2g. - Buy a .5 oz. bag for $16.00 (Found here for $12.00)

This tea is super mild and unlike any other tea I have had. You can absolutely skip any sweetener or cream, as added flavors would completely mask this teas delicate sensibility. Mamaki is a native Hawaiian herb believed to have many different medicinal usages:

Native Hawaiians have used the fresh or dried leaves of the mamaki plant to help with many internal disorders such as listlessness, stomach, colon, bladder, liver, and bowels. Native Hawaiians have also used the leaves for treatment of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, liver cleansing, depression, bladder problems, bladder infections, and PMS.

Like most caffeine-free teas I found it relaxing and comforting on this especially cold day.

Go Native November 2018 tea ball

Tea Ball Strainer - Buy a pack of 2 for $5.47

Manalani included a tea ball strainer this month to go with the tea. This was especially fortuitous as mine recently broke! This is a pretty traditional and straightforward ball style with a hinge and a little hook for the lip of your cup.

Verdict: This month's Go Native! had such variety. My favorite item was the face powder and I also love the subtle earthy scent of the salve. The jury is still out on the tonic, but subscription boxes are at their best when they put you a little bit outside of your comfort zone. I appreciated the beautiful tea and strainer, and have enjoyed a cup before bed these last few days. I find the value completely appropriate for the price tag because I love beautifully curated natural products.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, their cutoff date is the 15th to receive the following month so if you order today, December would be your first month.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $37 + $4.60 shipping, which means that each of the 5 items in the box has an average cost of $8.32.
