Foodstirs Baker's Club: Frosty's Frozen Friends Review

I love that Foodstirs decided to conserve paper and make things fun by including some activities on the back of their Nutritional Facts sheet. This is cute and it even goes with the theme!

This is the included recipe card with a photo of the finished product for reference. It also tells you how long it will take and everything you will need from home. They provided all of the dry ingredients, but we needed to provide eggs, butter, and plain yogurt. Luckily I had the butter on hand since I do a fair amount of baking, but I did have to run to the store for yogurt. This recipe makes about 6 cookies.

The directions are broken down into six steps with pictures to go along with them. They were very clear and easy to follow, but this recipe did call for some chilling and a longer bake time. This is probably fine for older kids, but since mine are four and two, I opted to do the majority of the baking solo!

The first step was to cube the butter and mix until it was creamy. Then add an egg and beat it some more.

Then, I just added our dry Sweet Tooth Sugar Cookie mix and mixed it until the dough formed.

I lined my baking sheet with parchment paper and started to roll out my dough. They wanted me to roll it into a 9-inch x 9-inch square which was tricky! I gave it a try but had to start over since it wasn't much of a square, but more of a circle and I had to move my dough to the table since the roller was hitting the edges of the pan.

On our activity sheet was a ruler for us to use to measure our sides (how convenient and thoughtful!). My dough was supposed to be 3/4 inch thick, but you can see mine was not quite that thick.

I chilled the dough for 10 minutes and then baked it at 350 for about 25 minutes until the edges were browning.

Next, I used my snowman cookie cutter to cut out 6 Frosty Friends. The edges were very hard so I had some difficulty, but managed to get 6 very thick cookies out of my dough plus a lot of scraps.

While my cookies were baking, I had gotten started on the icing. I mixed my butter with the yogurt and added my powdered frosting mix. It was very dry so I actually added an extra tablespoon of yogurt and that did the trick.

Now it was time to decorate! They provided everything we needed, even a piping bag and tip.

I transferred a 1/4 cup of icing to a separate bowl, added our blue food coloring and then my daughter mixed it up very vigorously you might notice!

Once it was nice and blue, we worked together to fill our piping bag.

I emptied our snow pearls into a dish. Then, I iced each cookie, dipped it in the pearls to coat our snowmen and passed them along to my daughter to finish decorating.

After she was done adding their faces using orange sprinkles for the nose, brown sprinkles for the mouth and mini chocolate chips for their eyes, I used our piping bag to add a scarf. Sorry, no pictures since I was hard at work!

These were actually much more difficult to decorate than I thought they would be and my four-year-old daughter did a great job despite this! The brown sprinkles for the mouth were very tiny and hard to place, and when you did place them, they didn't stick very well since the snowman was covered in the pearls. I still think they turned out pretty well!

Here is a closeup of mine, and you can see the mouth is not quite right and I tried to be pretty careful.

We had a little bit of frosting leftover and so I added it to our scraps for some extra cookie pieces to snack on!

The cookies were pretty delicious and probably the thickest cookies I've ever made! Although, I used greek yogurt for the icing this time and I think it is just a bit too tart for me, but that didn't seem to stop any of us from eating an entire cookie to ourselves! Since they were so thick, one was plenty big enough and very filling. They weren't overly sweet and we had a lot of fun making them.

Verdict: I loved the idea behind this month's Foodstirs Baker's Club box. It is a great winter treat that we had fun making and they were pretty cute! We even have a nice snowman cookie cutter for our collection should we make more cookies this season (we totally will!). They were much thicker than I expected, so it was almost like a cookie/cake, but they were still delicious and 6 cookies was a good size serving. I like knowing exactly what is in these baking mixes and the fact that we aren't sacrificing taste to keep them free from preservatives.  Overall, I thought it was a fun and tasty experience for my daughter and me for $26.98 ($18.99 + $7.99 shipping) and a lot less involved than making traditional sugar cookies!

Also worth noting: Foodstirs has gone back down to a more reasonable shipping rate since past reviews (currently $7.99 vs $14.90).

Interesting they had you bake the dough as a whole instead of cut the shapes then re-roll and cut again to make a few more cookies and not have any scraps left over. I have never seen it done this way. I wonder if it prevents spreading if they were cut prior to baking?

I didn’t read the instructions carefully, and I tried it the “normal” way -cutting them first and then baking. I think this dough is different than a regular sugar dough, because they spread into unidentifiable blobs by the time they were done. We salvaged it by re-cutting a (thinner) snowman out of each blob, but the instructions were definitely done that way for a reason!

I was also wondering this. However, I used this mix for the cutout flowers box before and it was very difficult to cut and then transfer, so maybe that is why. Also, the littler flowers crisped up a bit.

This was definitely a new method for me too! We’ve always cut the cookies first, then baked. I think this way ensured more of an even edge for our cookies so that they were a bit more consistent. I never would have thought of baking it first had the recipe not called for it! 🙂
