Vegan Cuts Snack Box October 2018 Review
I think Vegan Cuts has really stepped things up lately in terms of snack box curation. Let’s see what they sent for October:
The box came with this information card detailing the items in the box.
Señor Avocado Smoked Sea Salt Freeze-Dried Avocado Bites (0.8 oz) – Buy a 5 Pack for $19.95
Oh, wow. These were not good. It was like chewing on foam rubber. I normally split snacks with my husband and he refused to eat any of this past the first bite. I think half the joy in eating avocado is the creamy texture and that is just gone here.
Nutiva Organic Liquid Coconut Oil (garlic flavor, 1 fl oz) – Buy an 8 oz jar for $13.99 (found here for $12.59)
We do a lot of low-fat cooking around here and so even though this is a small amount, it’s enough for us for one meal. Unlike other coconut oil, this is liquid at room temperature. Coconut oil is not as good for you as people like to claim, but I think it’s OK to eat once in a while. The garlic flavor is pretty noticeable but this comes in unflavored varieties, as well.
Thunderbird Hazelnut Coffee Maca Real Food Bar (1.7 oz) – Buy 15 Bars for $29.95
We ate this at night and it didn’t keep us up, but I am seeing on the product page that it only has 5 mg of caffeine per bar, which really isn’t very much. (One cup of coffee is roughly 100 mg.) The coffee flavor wasn’t too strong for me (remember, I do not like coffee). This had a texture similar to other date and nut bars (the first ingredients here are dates, almonds, and hazelnuts in that order).
Upton Naturals Massaman Curry (9.87 oz) – Retail Value $4.49
I’ve seen these at Whole Foods but I am always happy to receive something to try out before spending money on it. This has precooked rice, vegetables, and tofu and you can heat it up in the microwave. This package contains two servings but they are so low in calories I’d suggest eating both at once. Please note this has soy, peanuts, and coconut, so watch out if you have food allergies. I am saving this because sometimes we are offered free lunch at work, so I don’t bring my own, and then I find out the free lunch is Southern BBQ so I don’t want to be within 50 feet of the room it’s being eaten in and I have to acquire an alternative, and this would be super quick if that happens.
Regrained Supergrain + Antioxidant Blueberry Sunflower Saison Bar (1.41 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $24.99
This has lots of antioxidants from cranberry, blueberry, and ginger, though it didn’t taste strongly of ginger to me. This has 8 grams of sugar, which is kind of a lot for me but I’m trying to minimize sugar. This has a little added protein from fava beans but it doesn’t taste beany. Avoid if you have celiac disease as it contains barley, wheat, and rye, all of which contain gluten (I don’t avoid gluten so I ate it). If you are looking for a grain bar, this could do the trick – calories are somewhat lower than the average protein bar but higher than the average granola bar. It was not too sticky and it was not too hard and it didn’t fall apart as I ate it.
YumEarth Organic Gummy Fruits (0.7 oz) – Buy 10 Bags for $6.99
I don’t get to eat too many gummies because most have gelatin, but these are thickened with pectin instead. They strike me as little kid food and I did see them near the checkout aisle at Whole Foods yesterday (I guess being promoted as Halloween candy, but if you get a lot of kids coming by your house, these are not really economical as Halloween candy). They had generic fruity flavors and were appropriately sweet. (Please note not everything from this brand is vegan; their candy corn has egg, honey, and shellac.)
4Pure Lemonade (12 fl oz) – Buy 12 Bottles for $28
The concept here is that this product has only four ingredients: water, lemon juice, maple syrup, and lemon zest. I took a sip but I really couldn’t justify having any more; this has 24 grams of added sugars in one bottle, which is close to half of all the sugar you should have in a day. Drinking that much sugar in any form definitely does not agree with me. It’s too bad, as this has an interesting flavor (there is some maple coming through to me). But I just can’t do that much sugar any longer.
The Soulfull Project Cinnamon Spice Multigrain Hot Cereal (1.4 oz) – Buy 10 Packets for $6.99
We received this last month in a different flavor (actually, last month’s was plain, now that I think about it). I am more a fan of this one, I think the cinnamon spice just works well with packaged oatmeal in general, and I feel like this is better for me than the packets of instant oatmeal I buy at Whole Foods (it seems like it has less sugar, anyway).
Orgain Chocolate Almond Sea Salt Protein Bar (2.05 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $27.99
I will give this credit for having a much better texture than most plant-based protein bars. You *almost* can’t tell it’s plant-based. The chocolate flavor is good. And having tried this, I have to say I like these bars a lot better than some of the other Orgain products (mostly shakes and protein powders).
Paleo Puffs in “No Cheese” Cheesiness (1 oz) – Buy 24 Bags for $17.99
This seems to be out of stock from the manufacturer’s website but if you have a Whole Foods nearby, if it is anything like mine, it will have a massive display of these, where you can try one bag out to see if they’re for you. These are just starchy puffs made from cassava flour. You chew twice and they dissolve in your mouth. It’s not my favorite texture profile for a snack. Also, perhaps if you are vegan these will taste like cheese to you, but to me, they taste like someone was trying to replicate a cheese flavor but didn’t quite get there.
Rawcha Bar in Cacao and Goji (30g) – Buy 20 Bars for $43.36 (£33.79)
This is a British product and seems to only be on sale in the UK so I used a currency converter. These are smaller than most bars. They do have a lot of matcha and greens but you can’t really taste that. These are mostly chocolate-flavored with a hint of generic fruitiness. These were not bad, though, and if you don’t mind ordering from overseas, a good way to get a lot of antioxidants at once.
Iota Roasted Sunflower Kernels in Classic (0.75 oz) – Buy 8 Bags for $11.92
These are pretty much just plain roasted sunflower seeds. Not really much on their own, but I can see topping a salad with them or using them in some stuffed vegetable or other (squash or something like that).
Incredipuffs Sizzlin’ Sriracha (0.74 oz) – Buy 12, 6 oz bags for $24.99
I am not usually into puffed snacks like this (see my thoughts on the Paleo Puffs above) but I actually liked these. These are made from cornmeal, navy beans, and dried potatoes, primarily, and I think maybe it’s the inclusion of the beans that make these work for me. They are more substantial than plain starchy puffs and also the flavor was just the right level of spiciness for me.
Sunbutter (creamy, 2.2 oz) – Buy 36 Cups for $40.47
All these peanut butter substitutes are kind of running together for me, but I’m pretty sure I’ve tried this one before. It gets the texture of peanut butter right, but that’s a flavor you can’t fully replicate. This would be good if your kid goes to a peanut-free school, but I’ll probably stick with regular peanut butter.
Vahdam Assorted Single Serve Long Leaf Tea Bags (5 bags)
This particular package isn’t available on the Vahdam Tea site, but it is a good way to sample some of their products. I drank all of these at work (in one day…haha). I received a similar package in Fit Snack Box this month (review coming soon!), though I think with one different variety. These are high-quality pyramid bags and I was a fan.
Verdict: This month’s Vegan Cuts Snack Box had 15 items for an average value per item of about $1.53. The variety was nice, with some bars and some pantry items and a few other things. While the avocado was not a hit, and there were a few repeats (i.e., Sunbutter), many items were also new to me and there were some pleasant surprises (like the Incredipuffs, which I was not expecting to like).
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would be November’s box, but some of the products may be available from the Vegan Cuts shop.
Value Breakdown: This box costs $22.95 + free US shipping, which means that each of the 15 items in the box has an average cost of $1.53.
