Note from Liz: I’m so happy to introduce our newest reviewer to the MSA team! Welcome, Regina!

TokyoTreat is a snack subscription box filled with candy and other tasty goodies from Japan. A little salty, a little sweet… all very authentic to what you’d find walking through a convenience store in Japan.

Each box comes with a detailed booklet. This lets you know more about the snacks you’re about to enjoy and for this month’s Halloween theme it also includes Japanese monster fun-facts! Time for those treats!!

Sanrio Halloween Papiro - Retail Value $2.63

This cute little box has individually wrapped, crispy chocolate rolls that are filled with an almond chocolate cream. The flavor is milder than I expected and not too sweet at all. These are a nice light treat that I will definitely be using to jazz up some packed lunches this week.

Halloween Chupa Chups Lollipop - Package view

Halloween Chupa Chups Lollipop - Retail Value $0.87

All of this month’s snacks have Halloween packaging but this Chupa Chups lollipop felt the most on-theme because it’s a skull with exposed brains. It is a nice combination of sweet and sour flavors.

The packaging of this snack immediately caught my eye with the adorable illustrations. It is a savory puffed rice snack and reminded me of a salty crouton. Surprisingly, for something so simple, it was one of my favorites in the box!

Halloween Shrimp Crackers - front view

Halloween Shrimp Crackers - Retail Value $1.01

As soon as I opened the bag, the shrimp smell was really strong. Usually, seafood-flavored snacks are not my favorites but these were pretty mild in taste if not in smell. I don’t think I’d eat them regularly but it was fun to try something so different!

Halloween Poteko Pumpkin Gratin - fornt view

Halloween Poteko Pumpkin Gratin - Retail Value $1.22

These snacks are petite rings that tasted a lot like potato chips to me. I loved the crunch of them and although I didn’t get much of a pumpkin taste I really enjoyed them. The pyramid packaging held a good-sized portion.

Pumpkin Wheat Puffs - front view

Pumpkin Wheat Puffs Share Pack - Retail Value $1.91

These were a string of four packets of the same snack that I imagine would be great to give out on Halloween. When I saw pumpkin flavored in the name, I have to admit I incorrectly guessed they’d taste of cinnamon and nutmeg like a pumpkin spice latte, but these wheat snacks have only a hint of pumpkin without spice. The puff is crunchy at first and then melts to become almost chalky, unlike any other snack I’ve had.

Candy Apple DIY Kit - Retail Value $1.69

I’ve heard of these DIY candy kits but had never tried one before and this was very cute! It includes apple flavored soft candies, a packet of candy apple syrup, and the tiniest little sprinkles. I loved the different textures coming together-the ‘apples’ were very chewy and the sprinkles gave it a nice crunch. It definitely seems like something that is ideal for sharing.

Balance Mini-Cake Bar - Pack View

Balance Mini-Cake Bar - Retail Value $1.08

It’s hard to think of anything cheesecake flavored as also being a health snack, but this mini-cake is just that-the booklet points out it is full of vitamins and calcium. It is a soft but dense cake with a very understated flavor.

Halloween Umaibo Corn Potage - pack front view

Halloween Umaibo Corn Potage - Retail Value $0.50

The umaibo is like a large and hollow cheese puff. This was my favorite snack of the box! It seemed as if the outside had a slightly sweet flavoring but overall the taste was savory. I couldn't figure out exactly what I was tasting but I loved every bite.

Verdict: TokyoTreat certainly delivered on a wide variety of sweet and savory snacks this month! There were several I really enjoyed, particularly the umaibo and Chupa Chups lollipop, and most were unlike anything I’d tried before. This month's total value is $11.43, which is far below the $25 a month box cost. However, I really was impressed by the variety and think there are enough snacks in the box to spread out throughout the month until the next one arrives.

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No, you will get the November box.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $25 + free shipping, which means that each of the 9 snacks in the box has an average cost of $2.78.

Love my treat boxes!! October was the last of my six month subscription and I renewed for another six. I get the premium box, a little extra money, but you get a cool drink and a few extra snacks. The October box was actually my least favourite of the ones I’ve gotten. I still enjoyed it, but because of the trick or treat theme, there were a couple weird things I didn’t enjoy as much as past boxes. But overall I’d recommend this subscription to anyone.
