Scentbird is a perfume subscription where you choose one fragrance per month. They offer a variety of authentic designer scents and allow you to narrow down by either traditional categories for notes (e.g., floral, woody, spicy, etc.) or more general descriptive terms (e.g., mysterious, classic, flirty). Subscribers also receive a monthly discount code that can be used on full-size bottles of perfume or cologne from the Scentbird shop.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Scentbird October 2018 Review

This month, I received Scentbird’s “Scent of the Month.” You can either opt for the scent of the month or you can fill a queue with fragrances of your choosing:

There was what is basically an advertising flyer for this month’s scent, “Maya” by Tocca.

Your fragrance is typically packaged in a cardboard tube and if you look at the back, it has instructions for how to put these in the Scentbird holders.

Scentbird October 2018 - Maya By Tocca Fragrance Front View

Maya by Tocca – Estimated Value $11.52 (buy 1.7 oz for $72)

I’m familiar with some Tocca fragrances but this is a new one for me (it was just released this year). This is floral but not exclusively so, and I feel like it has a little bit of a different thing going on from most floral fragrances. Base notes include sandalwood and patchouli and oakmoss and I am usually happy with combinations of these fragrances (and of course base notes are what stick around the longest!).

The middle notes are the floral ones (iris, rose, jasmine) but it’s a bit difficult to pick them out individually, at least on me, though you do get an overall floral vibe that actually blends pretty nicely with the base notes. I think it’s that middle note/base note combination that works for me.

Top notes include blackcurrant and violet leaf. This isn’t very fruity on me and I’m not sure what violet leaf smells like on its own (as opposed to violet flowers).

Verdict: The estimated value of my fragrance this month is $11.52, which is below the month-to-month cost of the subscription. I am a bit more inclined to forgive that since I liked the fragrance quite a lot. It took me a little outside my comfort zone but not so much so as to be completely foreign or unfamiliar. Also, I do appreciate receiving something fairly new (they mix it up with the scent of the month; sometimes you may receive something that’s been around for a while).

Please note: Some MSA readers have been having trouble getting their Scentbird shipments on time lately so be sure to read the comments on some of the past reviews to get a sense of what the issues are when making the decision to sign up.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, all you have to do is choose this fragrance for your queue.

Value Breakdown: This subscription is $14.95/monthly and this month, I received $11.52 worth of fragrance (but again, this is highly variable based on what scent or product you choose).

Had a horrible experience as they don’t respond to emails and they do not have no way to contact them. Shipments are slow and the sent me the wrong fragrance. I tried to canceled and they continued billing me. Switched over to another service Luxury Scent Box where you can reach live people in customer service and it has been smooth. Nothing but good things to say about this other company.

Ugh! So frustrated. After reading the above reviews, at least I am not alone. I was billed for November but never received my November shipment. I have emailed and FB messaged them multiple times. No reply beyond a computer generated response. Great concept. Horrible execution.

I just received my July and August back to back a week or so ago. All my summer scents gone to waste! Received Septembers a couple days ago . No word on October. And….I’ve been subscribed since March for 2 X fragrances a month and have never received any extra cases like I was supposed to. They were fine when I first started, but then when the started to move their shipping facility, shipping halted completely. (At least for me and my fiance) Its been such a headache, so MANY emails and promises. If you do want to sign up, I would definitely wait until things are running smoothly again.

I finally got my September shipment yesterday, after several emails and promises my package had been shipped. I cancelled due to shipping issues. Deals or not, I want to know I’m getting my item.

Just wanted to say thank you for your adept reviews of fragrances. I notice a lot of the MSA reviewers simply say the bare minimum on perfume samples in beauty boxes, or just say “I don’t really like perfume”. Your knowledge and use of fragrance terminology is appreciated. Thank you!

My shipment is MIA. I was charged and the perfume did ship but there’s been no movement for the last 8 days. What’s odd is that this shipment and my Play box are both MIA coming out of Ohio within one day of each other.

I sent an email to Scentbird but got back a scripted email that served no purpose. I will give it to Friday before I call them.

I had the same issue. I purchased some items from Eva NYC but once the package hit Ohio *poof* gone

I have the same issue. Ordered something from Eva NYC & it disappeared in Ohio!

They use slow shipping methods that don’t get scanned often, so if the package is still waiting for transfer to the USPS or whatever the tracking says (pretty much anything past “label created”), it probably really is on the way. Same for Sephora Play.

Unfortunately my mother had a subscription to scentbird. She unexpectedly passed away on July 18th. My dad noticed on Septembers bank statement they took out $100. One tiny bottle is all that came in the mail. I have for 2 weeks now to get this resolved. There automatic response is they will get back in 24 business hours. Well it’s been 240 hours and still not resolved. I WOULD NOT GET WRAPPED UP IN THEIR SCAM. ONLY COMMUNICATION IS THROUGH FB MESSAGES OR EMAIL.

I cancelled my sub a couple of months ago through my account. In there FAQs click on the “Membership & Subscribing” box, then click on the “See all 11 articles” link, then scroll to the bottom, then click on the last question “If I change my mind, can I cancel my subscription?”, then that’ll show you how to cancel. It’s a tiny link in your Order Status, but I thought I’d steer you to their FAQs because they show a picture of exactly where it’s located. 🙂
