Pet Treater October 2018 Review

There’s not a traditional information card with this subscription so there’s not always a stated theme, but you will occasionally see some commonalities running throughout the box contents.  This month, I guess it was mostly Halloween-related, but then Nyx doesn’t care about themes.  Also, they got a new box style this month:

There isn’t an item list with this subscription (it is my understanding some items may vary), but you usually get a picture of a dog.

There are sometimes advertisements in the box, as well.  They may or may not relate to the box contents.

pet treater october i poop easily bandana

Seasonal Bandana

I thought this was funny (Nyx takes 7 fiber pills a day to deal with her IBD, so she tends to go a lot), though I imagine some people could find it a bit crude. Anyway, it is printed on kind of cheap material, but it’s really only appropriate for a few days around this time of year anyway. It is a good size for a Rottweiler neck. You can see Nyx modeling it below.

Pet Treater October treats

Himal Dog Treat Cheesy Puff, 2 oz. – Buy 2 bags for $9.99 here

These are free of grains and soy, as well as meat proteins (though they do have dairy ingredients), so they will work for a lot of dogs with food issues.   gave Nyx one. Of course, she loved it. We are waiting a few days before trying more; this is just standard protocol for her. These are free of preservatives and artificial flavors and contain only yak milk, cow milk, lime juice, and salt.

Pet Treater October cookie

Holiday Cookie from Emmy’s Gourmet Canine Creations – Estimated Value $1.35

This particular cookie isn’t on the Emmy’s site, so I’ve just listed a value of one of their normal cookies instead. You’ll get a customized cookie from Emmy’s nearly every month. It is nice to see Pet Treater is reaching out and working with a small company and getting subscribers something fresh and unique.

pet treater october ring toy

Petprojekt Hydroring Dog Toy – Retail Value $12.99

These toys are made from natural rubber and are free of BPA and phthalates. I think they are supposed to float, but Nyx doesn’t do water. She seemed to have fun chewing on it, though, and it lasted more than one play session. (Pet Treater doesn’t guarantee that the toys will be suitable for heavy chewers.)

pet treater october shampoo product

Le Salon Dog Shampoo, Shine – Retail value $6.10

This shampoo is sulfate-free. (I’m not sure why that matters for dogs, as I’ve mostly heard to avoid sulfates if you have color treated hair, but whatever.) It is supposed to be a tearless formula, which is great. Nyx has to take baths with medicated shampoo due to a skin issue, so we may pass this along to someone else. I have a cousin who volunteers with rescue dogs and he takes excess treats off my hands already, so I may see if he’d like some grooming supplies as well.

pet treater october spooky pooch treat

Healthy Dogma Spooky Pooch Bacon Recipe Dog Treats. 5 oz – Retail Value $5.95

This brand shows up fairly often in Pet Treater, but also in other dog subscription boxes, and I tend to think well of it. It’s kind of fun to get a seasonal treat, and these had an expiration date that was well in the future. These are free of wheat, corn, and soy and are made in Michigan from all-natural ingredients sourced in the USA. These do have barley and oats, as well as bacon, but no other animal proteins.

All For Paws Xtra-R Durable Octo Toy – Estimated Value $11.89

I could only find these either sold out or in other countries, so I used a value from one of the sold out listings. This is a durable rubber toy, but I am hesitant to give it to Nyx, as I think there is a potential danger. You know how most KONGs and similar toys have a large hole at the bottom for putting treats/peanut butter/etc. in, but they also have a second, smaller hole at the other end to prevent your dog’s tongue from getting stuck due to suction? Well, as you can see, this one doesn’t have that second hole. So if you are planning to give this to your dog(s), I would suggest not putting anything inside that could get them to stick their tongues in there and get stuck due to suction.

Nyx liked this toy. I particularly enjoy the last photo.

Here she is with the bandana. I put it on her back because you couldn’t read it when she had it on in front. I think she’s a little annoyed with me in that last picture.

Verdict: There were 7 items in the October 2018 Pet Treater box, for an average value of about $3.57.  I couldn’t find everything online (some closeouts, one custom item, etc.), so I didn’t try to calculate a total value. I feel that the contents of the box this month are representative of what you’d receive in a typical month. I think the toys were size-appropriate for an 80+ pound dog but would also work for 50-60 pound dogs. (Pet Treater is generally quite good about sending size-appropriate toys.) I was a little disappointed that the rubber toy didn’t have a second hole, as that is an important safety feature, though overall, I thought the box was all right.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your subscription would start with the November box.

Value Breakdown: At $24.99 for the box, you are paying about $3.57 per item.

My dog has to use a sulfate free shampoo because of his skin allergies. So for some dogs it is best.

Ragan

I didn’t think about allergies. I can’t use sulfates in toothpaste for basically the same reason.
