Gramma In a Box October 2018 Review
This card describes the candy and cookie projects for this month. On the back, it lists the contents of the box as well as a list of items that you would need from home. It also mentioned that the two sheets of included wax paper were to be used as placemats to make for easy cleanup. This month's theme is Halloween and there were some fun projects included!
Project #1: Oreo Spiders
The first candy project was Oreo spiders. Each recipe comes on its own card with the ingredients listed on the back. They are always labeled in the order that you should make them so everything is well- planned out and easy to follow.
The first step was to melt our chocolate wafers in a bowl and stir them until melted.
Next, we opened up our Oreos and added some spider legs to the half with the creme. Then I placed a dollop of chocolate in the middle and replaced the top of the cookie.
I added one more little dab of chocolate to the top of the spiders and then we added our little candy eyes to complete our spiders. This was so simple and cute! Our Oreos were a little bit soft, but the kids didn't seem to mind. This is a fun idea we can easily recreate at home and probably will do, but I'm thinking I'll add a full layer of chocolate to the tops and get some fun purple or green sprinkles to spruce them up a bit!
Project #2: Monster Bark
Our second project was to make Monster Bark. We used the leftover melted chocolate and spread it out into a big rectangle on the other half of the wax paper where our spiders were setting up.
They included all sorts of fun things to put into our bark like eyeballs, candy bones, and gummy worms.
I completely missed a step and forgot to stir our crispies into the chocolate, but fortunately, I caught it before the bark had set, so we just pressed them into the top as quickly as we could! This was a fun treat and making bark is so versatile! You could really add anything you want to it and these creepy bones and worms were perfect for Halloween.
Someone was getting impatient so I let him have the extra chocolate from the bowl. Lesson learned.
Project #3: Halloween Cookie Decorating
The last activity was the cookie decorating. I included the wrong card in my first photo, but you can see the full card in a photo further down. We received two ghosts, four pumpkins, and two large candy corn cookies with yellow, white, and orange icing.
These were fun shapes to decorate and my daughter enjoyed trying to make hers look like candy corn! They all turned out really well and even my 2-year-old did a great job with decorating. We are really starting to get a routine going with these projects, which makes it even easier for us to complete them!
We always have plenty of extra icing leftover despite the fact that my daughter always goes super heavy on the icing!
These were such fun Halloween projects this month! We ended up with 4 spider cookies, 1 large piece of bark and 8 cookies (one ghost not pictured, because my 2-year-old just couldn't wait!). We are supposed to have enough supplies for 20 treats, but I really don't think that piece of bark is more than 4 servings, so this month felt a little light to me. I think it would have been cute if they had maybe sent a few mini Oreos to turn into spiders, or just included 2 more Oreo spiders to round it out.
I always appreciate the individual recipe cards for each project because they are easy to save and use again if we find one that we really like.
I love how easy clean up is each month. I literally just put all of the empty containers and papers into the box that it ships in and throw it in the recycle bin. After a quick wipe up, I get to spend that time enjoying some treats with the kids instead of doing dishes! This was a perfect after dinner activity that we could complete before we started our bedtime routine!
Verdict: The Halloween crafts in this month's Gramma In A Box were so cute! As usual, the box was so organized with well thought out projects and step by step directions. It feels very homemade, yet they always make sure to include important ingredient and allergen information. This box costs $20 per month and I really think that a lot of that value comes from the experience itself. The treats did feel a little bit light this month, but I think they were really fun and we enjoyed completing them together. There is a lot of value in not having to do the cooking, shopping or planning, but instead having the complete package delivered to my door to just pull out for a fun family activity with no muss or fuss.
