Cricket Crate "Neighborhood Fun" October 2018 Review

Cricket Crate October 2018 - wonder magazine Cricket Crate October 2018 - wonder magazine 2 Cricket Crate October 2018 - wonder magazine 3

Each month you will receive a Wonder magazine. This goes over what the main theme of the month is and how that ties back to the project. This month is all about exploring your neighborhood, developing pencil grasping, and how to make connections with books.

Next, I received this little information card that goes over everything in the box and how each activity works.

Cricket Crate October 2018 - water mat Cricket Crate October 2018 - water mat detail Cricket Crate October 2018 - water mat open

Water Play Mat

Our first item of the month is this amazing water play mat! It came safely packaged together and when you open it you discover an entire neighborhood. I couldn't wait to show this to my son and get started on discovering all of the drawings. He has similar water play books with pictures that he loves playing with so I knew it was going to be a hit.

Cricket Crate October 2018 - paint brush

Paint Brush

The second item out of the box is this handy little paintbrush. This pairs with the water play mat, and is a great tool to use with helping your little one's pencil grasping skills.

Cricket Crate October 2018 - water bowl

Water Bowl

They really thought of everything this month! The next item up is this water bowl that you can use to keep water safely to the side for your little one to dip the paintbrush into. I love that they included all items we would need to use the water play mat.

Cricket Crate October 2018 - characters

Wooden Toys

These little wooden toys are meant to be used while exploring the neighborhood on the water play mat. The activity card even suggests using the water bowl and washcloth to give them a bath! Fox was obsessed with these characters and loved having them walk across the water mat.

Washcloth

The final piece to our project this month is this little washcloth. It can be used to dry off our wooden characters if your little one decides to give them a bath or use them on the water mat. I found this helpful to have around to use during cleanup as well!

Finally, it was time to play! Fox could not wait to use this new water mat, I mean look at that smile! He has played with this multiple times in the past few days already and loves identifying all of the pictures on the mat. Taking the wooden toys across the mat to see what adventures they could go on was Fox's favorite part, and I absolutely loved listening to him play make-believe as he made each character talk. I do wish though that there would have been colors on the page, we were a bit surprised that with every stroke there weren't new colors to discover. However, Fox loved it and didn't even notice so I call this one a win!

Cricket's Great Wait - Listed Value $6.95

This month's theme continues through with the board book! Cricket gets lost in her neighborhood, where we learn an important lesson about what to do if you do find yourself lost. This is a great way to understand how to explore your neighborhood.

Verdict: I loved this month's Cricket Crate and it was an even bigger hit with my son! Fox was so excited about his new water play mat, and I love that it is something we will be able to keep and use over again. They truly thought of everything that we would need to use our mat, I wouldn't have expected to receive a paint brush, wooden toys, and water bowl to complete a fun water play time! Plus, at $19.95, I am getting a full activity that is already planned for me, a book, and a monthly magazine that I usually end up keeping to read through again for new and fun ideas!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? As of publication, the October box is still available. From KiwiCo:

Crates are assigned each month based on availability and your crate history - not all subscribers receive the same theme each month.

The Neighborhood fun crate is great! My toddler still plays with the water mat several times a week and Cricket’s Great Wait was one of her favorite books for the longest time. I do wish I knew how to clean the water mat as it does get grungy over time with parts never returning to the white – but we’ve had it near a year now & it gets heavy use so I am not surprised.

That’s so wonderful you have been able to keep it that long!

I am very pleased it lasted! My toddler also likes to ‘experiment’ now that she is almost three using things other than the paintbrush – her hand, blocks, toys, etc. to make different patterns. I have fun with it, too, as it’s basically a Buddha board in a mat! It’s my favorite thing in the Kiwi Crate line I’ve gotten so far because it’s so versatile and doesn’t turn into ‘clutter’ like some of the activities would. Plus it’s large enough adults can join her in ‘painting.’

I don’t have any Kiwi subs currently active (though I’ve gotten maybe 8 boxes across varying age ranges for my daughter and her cousins) but I’m probably going to grab the Newborn Cricket three box set for my baby on the way.

Jess

This looks great! This will be my first box, which will either be arriving today or tomorrow. I’m pretty impressed so far!
