Yummy Bazaar Full Experience August 2018 Review
You'll get a pamphlet that tells you the featured country this month, which is actually the group of countries known as Scandinavia which includes food from Sweden, Norway, and Finland. There are also descriptions of each item.
Sunnmore Fish Meatballs in Brine, 28/18 oz. - Retail Value $9.95
Here we are at the first item and I don't know if I can do it. When I first saw that Scandinavia was the featured area this month, I was excited because it's the number one place I'd like to visit. But then fish meatballs happened. I wish my roommate was in town to try these for me because he'll eat anything, but I couldn't find anyone else to give these a whirl. Reading the preparation instructions actually make these sound less daunting. You mix butter with flour in a pan and stir until smooth, then add brine from the can (which gives it flavor) and bring to a boil. You then add cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. The fish meatballs are then added to heat through and are to be served with potatoes or veggies. I think I'd need to try these prepared by someone who knows what they are doing before I gave it a try...
Finax Muesli with Nuts and 45% Fruit, 22.9 oz.
This bag of mixed grains, fruit, and nuts seems more familiar since it's close to a trail mix situation. However, I don't think I've normally eaten oats uncooked so I'm not quite sure if this is something I should be enjoying as a cereal or alone. Neither the info sheet or package makes it clear, but trying a handful on its own proved to be rather delicious. Included in the mix are wheat and oat flakes, raisins, barley flakes, banana chips, roasted barley flakes, and roasted hazelnuts. I think I'm in love? These are going to be my new snack! The bag is huge, so hopefully, it will last me quite a while.
Hafi Lingonberry Drink Concentrate - Retail Value $6.95
I said to myself "ok, where's the lingonberry?" literally as I was pulling this wrapped bottle out of the box. I've been to Ikea, I know what I'm talking about, ok! 😉 Lucky for me, this bottle of concentrate makes much more delicious Swedish berry juice than it contains. I mixed the concentrated syrup with water as directed and poured it over ice to enjoy. If you've never had lingonberry juice, it's a lot like a cranberry juice, but not as tart. I love it! This is a total score.
Leksands Original Rye Crispbread, 7 oz. - Retail Value $3.95
I really wish I had some smoked salmon right about now so I could plot it on this whole grain rye flour biscuit with cream cheese and dill. This large triangular cracker doesn't taste too far off from a Trisket, just not as salty. This would be great for a myriad of finger foods and pairs really well with cheese. I love the package design too!
Goteborgs Ballerina Hazelnut Filled Biscuits, 6.7 oz. - Retail Value $2.95
I can't stop giggling when reading this brand name because of the local band here in Pittsburgh called The Gotobeds. This brand is just their Swedish counterparts, I guess. ANYHOW - these hazelnut sandwich cookies rule. I think it's safe to say that if cookies come in a sleeve like this, they're going to be good. Half vanilla cookie, half chocolate cookie, with smooth hazelnut spread holding them together- you can't go wrong.
Halva Sweet Black Licorice, 7 oz. - Retail Value $3.50
I can get down with soft strawberry licorice but I just can't do black licorice. I just don't care for anise-flavored anything, so I enlisted Andy to try this stuff out and let me know how it measured up. He said it was super soft and had a nice mild flavor. The only thing he didn't like was how oily they are. He took the whole bag though, so I guess this is a win for black licorice lovers.
Slotts Senap Original Mustard - Retail Value $10.99 (found here for $7.99)
Oooh, ok. I like getting condiments in Yummy Bazaar and mustard is one I quite like. Apparently, this isn't as spicy as German mustard and I have to say that it is quite vinegar-y and reminds me of some brown mustards I've had stateside. Nothing too wild about this one, but it does have a slightly sweet finish, as it says. I did notice that this one was made in Poland though, so I wonder if it's still a Swedish brand? This will be great with some cheese and those crispbreads!
Verdict: Yummy Bazaar Full Experience Box threw me for a bit of a loop this month and challenged me to go a bit out of my comfort zone. Maybe I'll try the fish meatballs someday, but I'm not quite ready yet. The Muesli was the most surprising item for me this month and allowed me to find a new trail-mix like treat. The lingonberry juice is also wonderful and saved me a trip of battling tri-state area shoppers at my local Ikea. I liked everything but the meatballs I didn't have the courage try and the licorice I knew wasn't for me.
