About Youtini

The Subscription Box: Youtini

The Cost: Youtini offers 2 subscription box tiers, and your book preferences selections (hard cover, paperback, graphic novels, etc) add onto the base prices for your monthly total. The Basic level subscription is $7+books monthly, and Enriched is $14+books monthly. Additionally, while setting up your subscription, you can select options for pre-built boxes that have set contents.  The box I'm reviewing is a pre-built box option (the Master Box, which includes 1 canon hardcover and 1 legends paperback, for +$26)) that is on the Enriched subscription tier ($14), making it a total of $40 cost.

ACTIVE DEAL: Save $5 off your first box!
CODE: STARWARSMSA

The Products: Youtini's Basic subscription delivers just the books, and their Enriched subscription additionally includes a Youtini magazine, Illustrated bookmarks, a themed pin, Youtini posters, and activity extras like code games and puzzles.

Ships to: US for free, Canada for $15, Mexico for $20, and everywhere else for $25

Youtini August 2018 - preferences selection

To explain a little more about how the pricing works, the base boxes cost either $7 (for just books) or $14 (for books and additional Youtini extras) and then you pick your book type preferences and that adds onto the base prices for your monthly total. So, for example, if you got the Enriched level subscription for $14 and wanted to only get canon paperbacks, then your total would be $21/month.

Youtini August 2018 - Pre Built Box Options

Additionally, you can select pre-built boxes. The contents of my box match up with the Master box, including 1 ledgends paperback and 1 canon hardcover. This means the box I'm reviewing costs $40 total ($14 for the Enriched subscription tier and $26 for the pre-built master box option).

Youtini August 2018 - master box cost break down

I know the way they have the price variations designed can be a little confusing, so here's how the cost breaks down if I follow the sign-up process to purchase this pre-built Master Box, which the items I was sent match.

Youtini August 2018 - info booklet

Youtini also sent a mini magazine with my subscription box that had some very cool extra content.

Youtini August 2018 - info booklet 2

One section I liked was this canon roundtable discussion of a couple books from the Youtini leadership team.

Youtini August 2018 - info booklet 3

This timeline of where all the books fall was helpful!

Youtini August 2018 - info cards

They also sent an info card and activity with a coded puzzle to solve and share for a prize.

Youtini August 2018 - info booklet 4

Also included was a poster, which features Admiral Thrawn, one of the biggest characters from the extended universe that isn't a part of the core Star Wars saga (but is in other canon content and shows like Star Wars Rebels).

Youtini August 2018 - Star Wars Heir to the Empire back

Star Wars Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn - Listed Value $7.99

Heir to the Empire is set taking place 5 years after the Return of the Jedi movie. It's also the first book in the Thrawn Trilogy. As I said earlier, Grand Admiral Thrawn is an important character in extended universe stories. This book was canon when originally released, but Lucasfilms gave this series the "Star Wars Legends" label when they designated is as non-canon. In this story, Luke has officially become a Jedi knight and Han and Leia are married and she's pregnant with twins!

Star Wars Thrawn Alliances by Timothy Zahn - Retail Value $28.99 (found here for $20.28)

The other book I was sent was a hardcover, and it's a canon story about Grand Admiral Thrawn and Lord Darth Vader teaming up to take down a threat to the empire. Turns out, they both teamed up once before when they were "good" guys, as General Anakin Skywalker and Mitth’raw’nuruodo. What's extra cool is that this is a signed copy.

Youtini August 2018 - Book/movie timeline

I loved that this book included a timeline of all the canon content, including this Thrawn trilogy, the Clone Wars and Rebels shows, and I was really happy to see that this was printed recent enough to include the new Solo movie!

Youtini August 2018 - pin

Youtini Button Pin - Estimated Value $1

Youtini August 2018 - bookmark

Youtini Art Bookmark - Estimated Value $2

Also included was a button pin and bookmark, featuring the same art that is featured on the poster they sent.

Verdict: Youtini is a Star Wars book subscription box that seems quite comprehensive and well-designed. For example, I love that they let you specify what types of books you prefer, and they also offer a virtual "bookshelf" on their website that you can use to track your collection and add any titles you already own so they don't send you any duplicates. Also, the new canon books they send are first-edition copies and are usually signed, and that they let you choose if you want canon, non-canon (legends) or both. One thing I mentioned to my husband, Luke (yes, actually named after Luke Skywalker... we take our sci-fi serious over here), was that I thought the name was odd or didn't convey that it's a Star Wars book subscription. He said "hootini" (sp) is actually a Jawa line from Episode IV. I actually watched through the scene and he's right! And I assume they made it "YOUtini" to make it a pun for the name of the box. How much more obscure can you get than that? I think it's fantastic. Definitely a joke true die-hard Star Wars fans would get.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You should be able to get this box, or a very similar build (canon hardcover + legends paperback) by selecting the Enriched tier when subscribing, and then choosing the pre-built Master Box option.

Timothy Zahn is my favorite Star Wars author! When I was younger I always hoped that episodes 7,8, and 9 would be the Thrawn Trilogy or at least incorporate characters like Mara, Jacen, and Jaina.

I am confused…..the $14 “Enriched” experience includes a booklet they already produce for the sub, a button and a bookmark? I am not following.
The joke most fans would get about the title of the sub, clever and cute. But just not seeing the value here.

Hey Dawn! Corey here – founder of Youtini.

The Enriched Experience includes the extras in the box – the magazine, poster, bookmark, and other activities.

The Basic Experience leaves those items out and only includes the books that subscribers order.

Star Wars book collectors are sometimes only interested in receiving books based on their preferences and would rather save some money and receive only the books rather than the full experience. We created that option after surveying our customers and learning that there was a need for it.

Hope that helps! May the Force be with you!
