VetPet Box (Cat Version) September 2018 Review

Every month, VetPet Box sends toys, supplies, and wellness items.

The main wellness items this month relate to hairball control:

Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box.

There is always educational material in a full-color, fold-out brochure that is sturdy enough for storage and later reference. This month’s theme is hairball control. The brochure informs me that hairballs should be rare. Whoever wrote this is obviously not acquainted with Monkey in the summertime.

Le Salon Essentials Self Cleaning Slicker Brush

Le Salon Essentials Self Cleaning Slicker Brush – Listed Value $14.99

This item does not appear to be available from any US-based sellers. (There is a non-self-cleaning version available, though.) But the idea here is you use this to brush your cat and then there is a button you push on the back and the hair that has been trapped by the bristles comes right out. I tried it out on Monkey and it worked well. (Monkey LOVES brushes.)

Fiesta Pet Bowl – Retail Value $10

This item isn’t available on the Fiesta website but there was a sticker on the bottom with a $10 price tag on it. I am actually in the market for a new bowl for Angus so this came at a good time. This was super well-wrapped and survived transit nicely.

Cocotherapy Hairball Plus Fiber (7 oz)

Cocotherapy Hairball Plus Fiber (7 oz) – Retail Value $11.95

Well, here is an item I had never heard of before. I’m glad we got such a big bag, because my two hairball-getting kitties, Monkey and Madison, both like the flavor of coconut, which is the only ingredient here. The idea is that the fiber helps things pass through the digestive system. I won’t know for a week or two whether this is working but I would totally pay full price for it if it does work.

Get Naked Urinary Health Treats (2.5 oz)

Get Naked Urinary Health Treats (2.5 oz) – Retail Value $3.99 (found here for $3.79)

These treats have cranberry in them, which should help with urinary health. Sneaky will probably be getting most of them because we use treats to lure her to the bathroom prior to giving her, her asthma medicine (cats don’t really like inhalers, so…). She is on prednisolone every other day so she does have dilute urine and is the most prone of all my kitties to UTIs. But she, Madison, and Monkey all enjoyed these (Mr. Kitty can’t have them and we are not letting Angus eat chicken right now as we are doing a food allergy trial).

Get Naked Furball Relief Treats (2.5 oz) – Retail Value $3.99 (found here for $3.79)

These are softer treats that were well-liked by Sneaky, Madison, and Monkey. In the interest of minimizing hairballs, Madison and Monkey are getting the majority of these (my short-haired cats don’t really get hairballs).

Go Cat Fur Pong Toy (2 count)

Go Cat Fur Pong Toy (2 count) – Total Retail Value $4.58 ($2.29 each)

My cats are suckers for anything with fur. So far their interest in these has mostly been limited to rubbing their faces on the fur part, but I suspect when Angus gets out of his cone I will start finding them downstairs. You can see photos of them outside of the packaging below.

Mad Cat Pouncin’ Prawn Catnip Toy – Retail Value $4.95

Mad Cat toys are huge hits at my house. Madison is an especially big fan. These have silvervine in addition to catnip and they are also really cute. (Madison was feeling a bit camera shy during our photo session with these toys. He gets like that sometimes. It has been a bit stressful at home over the past week with out-of-town visitors and several sick kitties and the cats totally notice.)

Mad Cat Baby Carrot Catnip Toy –

Mad Cat Baby Carrot Catnip Toy – Retail Value $5.95

At first, I didn’t understand the pacifier, and it took me a really long time to make the BABY carrot connection, but in my defense, I was tired, and I do think this is a clever idea. Like the prawn, this one also has silvervine as well as catnip and several different textures for my cats to enjoy. This is a good size for tossing although when Madison really gets going, he mostly just rolls on top of these toys on the floor.

Gratuitous cat photo time:

Angus liked rubbing his face on these toys. I think he will be more playful once the e-collar is off. We are switching his food right now to do a food trial and I am crossing my fingers that that’s all it takes to clear up his issues. Poor guy has been in and out of the cone for a while.

Madison rubs his face on things.

He secretly loves this toy but looks annoyed here.

He went all blurry when I fed him a treat but look at that tongue.

I brush Monkey. You can see the button on the back that you use to remove the fur.

Monkey inspects the brush. This is from like one pass across his side. (Monkey eats hair out of brushes so I have to keep them away from him…)

I love the look on his face here.

One of my better “Sneaky eating treats” pictures lately.

And here is Sneaky being annoyed that this toy is not a treat. (She lives for food.)

Mr. Kitty, as you may have heard, just started insulin for his diabetes (diagnosed last week) and is fighting an upper respiratory infection and an ear infection and he is not feeling his best right now so he will not be appearing in cat subscription box reviews for a little while.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $60.40 for September’s VetPet Box. That’s comfortably over the cost of the box. We do have a hairball problem at my house and all the hairball-reducing supplies, treats, and supplements are greatly appreciated. The toys are popular, as well, and I needed a new cat bowl, so this was a good month for us.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? New subscribers usually get an introductory box. However, if you contact Vet Pet Box, you can get a past month’s box (like say you really want to get the dental one more than once, because your cat has bad teeth).

Mr. Kitty is significantly better, almost completely back to his old habits now, and his respiratory infection is clearing up (though he has passed it to Sneaky and Madison). However he is basically completely blind now. =(
