Vegan Cuts Snack Box September 2018 Review

I think Vegan Cuts has really stepped things up lately in terms of snack box curation. Let’s see what they sent for September:

The box came with this information card detailing the items in the box.

Beanitos Hint of Lime (1.2 oz) – Buy 6 oz for $4.19 (found here for $2.88)

Ah, Beanitos. I do like these, and buy them from Whole Foods occasionally, but I’m kind of over getting them in subscription boxes. This particular variety is tasty enough to eat without dip although it does work with salsa, chili, etc. These have some fiber and protein and actually less sodium than you would expect based on the flavor.

Loma Linda Chipotle Bowl with Black Beans (10 oz)

Loma Linda Chipotle Bowl with Black Beans (10 oz) – Retail Value $5.99

I am actually saving this. There is a free lunch at work next week and work lunches are really hit or miss for me (usually more “miss” than “hit” since there’s often barbecue or something equally unacceptable being offered). This is my backup plan. If there is nothing I can eat, I can pop this in the microwave at home when I go to take Nyx out and feed Mr. Kitty. This bag has two servings but each serving is only 130 calories so it’s totally OK to eat the whole thing. This contains textured soy protein in addition to brown rice and black beans and a few bits of vegetable. (If I am feeling the need for more vegetables I can add some frozen corn or something of that nature.)

Biena Chickpea Snacks in Rockin’ Ranch (1.2 oz) – Buy 4, 5-oz Bags for $17.96

I have had a lot of chickpea snacks but this brand is new to me. I usually associate ranch with buttermilk (even more so after reading a lengthy piece about it in the New York Times food section) but this manages to capture the ranch flavor nicely even without the dairy. These also have a better texture (i.e., won’t break your teeth) than some other chickpea snacks.

The Real Coconut Chocolate Chip Plantain Flour Cookies (1.5 oz) – Buy 4 Packs for $12

I think I had some other cookies from this company in a different box this month but not the same flavor. Regardless, for some reason, the texture of these was better than the ones from the other box. Not like eating cookies made from flour, but they didn’t totally stick all over my teeth, either. Don’t gorge yourself, though, because they are still cookies and have a nutritional profile similar to other cookies but perhaps with a bit more fiber.

Bumble Bloom Organic Apple-Based Honey Alternative (4.4 oz)

Bumble Bloom Organic Apple-Based Honey Alternative (4.4 oz) – Retail Value $10.03 ($12.99 CAD)

This was a spoiler item for the month. It is from Canada, hence the inexactness in the retail value (I did a currency conversion because there wasn’t an obvious US source). I know there are a ton of liquid sweeteners that are vegan (like corn syrup, agave nectar, etc.) but this strikes me as more of something you’d use in tea or as a topping or spread as opposed to in baking (because it’s kind of spendy for the amount you get). I did not think it tasted particularly much like honey, to be honest, but it was sweet and enjoyable and it had the right look and feel.

Bubba’s Fine Foods Blazing Buffalo ‘Nana Chips (1.2 oz) – Buy 8, 2.7 oz Bags for $24.99

These were really good. They may have been my favorite item from the box. Naturally, that means they are very high in sodium and saturated fat (they’re fried in coconut oil) so they are not very good for you at all. But they are sure tasty.

The Soulfull Project Hearty Grains and Seeds Multigrain Hot Cereal (1.4 oz)

The Soulfull Project Hearty Grains and Seeds Multigrain Hot Cereal (1.4 oz) – Buy 10 Packets for $6.99

This has rolled oats, quinoa, chia, and flax and is sugar-free. When you buy this, the company also donates 10 servings to a food bank, which is great, and it doesn’t increase the price to an unreasonable amount of money, which is also pretty nice from a consumer perspective. This is very, very plain, and I actually stirred in some of the Bumble Bloom as well as a bunch of cinnamon.

R.E.D.D. Peanut Butter Energy Bar (2 oz) – Retail Value $3.49

This does have some caffeine (about 35 mg) and some peanuts and grains, as well as quite a lot of sugar in various forms (totaling 14g, though not all of that counts as added sugar). This also has a lot of vitamins and minerals. I think this would be a good food for mornings when you are in a hurry. But there are peanuts and tree nuts so if you have those allergies, this won’t work for you, obviously. I thought it was pretty average in terms of taste and texture compared to similar products (a lot of which I’ve gotten to try in food subscription boxes these past few years).

Rind Orchard Blend (1.5 oz) – Buy 6, 3 oz Bags for $34.99

I was a little worried at first when I saw “eat the peel” on the package because I thought it might actually be peel only, but as you can see from the second image, it’s actually just dried fruit slices (cored or pitted as appropriate). This was good as a snacking-type dried fruit (as opposed to baking) and actually, none of the fruits were too tough, plus the inclusion of persimmon was new and different.

Rise Buddy Sea Salt (1.4 oz) – Buy a 12 Pack for $18

These show up about once a month for me lately. I’ve gotten them in various food and fitness subscription boxes. These are gluten-free and made with whole grain rice flour. I have to admit, I am a little over the sea salt flavor, which I find very plain and honestly a bit boring. Although I suppose this may be one of the only vegan flavors, which is why we received this instead of a different flavor. I wouldn’t mind seeing this again in a different flavor.

Sahale Snacks Pomegranate Flavored Pistachios (1.5 oz) – Buy 6, 4 oz Bags for $26.94

Here is something else I have received at least 2-3 times in recent months from several different boxes. I do like this quite a lot. It has almonds, pistachios, and cherries all coated in a sweet glaze, and I’m kind of glad we only got a small bag because I could keep eating this for a long time…

Sheffa Mint Dark Chocolate Granola Bar (0.85 oz)

Sheffa Mint Dark Chocolate Granola Bar (0.85 oz) – Retail Value $1.09

These are everywhere. I know I’ve received them in Love with Food and also from Vegan Cuts before. I guess they are OK but I don’t really get into granola bars; they’re just not something I regularly buy or consume. They are sort of midway between super soft granola bars with fruit and the harder ones. These are gluten free if that is of concern to you.

Inca Tea Peruvian Spiced Berry (1 bag) – Buy 15 Bags for $7.99

The packaging is biodegradable (both the outer bag and the tea bag), which is a nice feature. This has a purple color and a pretty standard berry taste with just a slight undertone that is different and difficult to describe (but not bad!). This company has some interesting flavors that aren’t your usual tea blend flavors and I’d be interested in receiving more of them in the future.

Veggie Chips Ghosts and Bats (0.5 oz) – Buy 12 Bags for $5.99

These remind me a lot of Pringles, which is not necessarily a good thing (Pringles and I don’t have the best history). I was very disappointed that they were smashed to bits because I think I would’ve enjoyed seeing the shapes. If you are thinking about getting these, I’d consider buying from a store (I’ve seen them at Whole Foods) where they are more likely to be intact.

Verdict: This month’s Vegan Cuts Snack Box had 14 items for an average value per item of about $1.64. The variety was nice, with some chips and some bars and some cookies and even some pantry items. There were a few items that were repeats for me but they didn’t dominate the box, and there were quite a few items and brands I hadn’t seen before, as well. The banana chips were a particular favorite and the folks at Vegan Cuts were smart in not sending meltable stuff since it is still hot here (I can’t say that for every food box, unfortunately). I’d say this was a pretty good month for me overall.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, the September box is still available. They don’t have a standard cut-off date, but boxes ship until their next month’s spoilers launch (typically between the 26th and 29th of each month). Check out our latest spoilers!

🤔 after seeing this review I now realize my box was missing the rise buddy sea salt snack. Aside from that, I was pretty pleased overall with this month. I too really enjoyed the buffalo banana chips! Andddd, although you’re so right about the cookies still being cookies, I was super surprised by how good they were! Ugh on the barbecue; I feel you- my job gets big catering orders for holidays and it’s usually always meat-based. The chipotle bowl was pretty decent and had more of kick than I expected.
