Our Review

This month's SugarlyBox candies

After Marne's latest CandyClub review, I was super curious to check out how the (more affordable) SugarlyBox compares. Is this the candy subscription we've all been searching for?

My first impression was that I loved the brightly colored packaging and the cute screw-top containers! The presentation and unboxing is a little nicer and more appropriate for gift-giving, in my opinion. I'm sure these containers could be re-used for other things, too.

Gummy Bears

Gummy Bears

First up, an assortment of brightly colored gummy bears. Not my personal favorite candy but the colors in these really appealed to me for some reason.

A couple of things I noticed as I started to actually unpack this box: 1, there was no nutritional info anywhere or any identification about the brand of the candy included. 2, the plastic containers are definitely smaller than they look from photos on the website.

Gummy Bears

Overall, I thought these were good! They tasted fresh and survived in shipping despite the heat we've had around here lately.

Blue Raspberry Belts

Blue Raspberry Belts

These are a candy I'm familiar with from previous candy subscriptions. They are definitely super sour; I can't help but make a sour-pucker-face every time I eat one.

Blue Raspberry Belts

Again - they're definitely fresh and seem to be the name brand variety, but I did kind of wish there was more info in the box.

Milk Chocolate Malt Balls

Milk Chocolate Malt Balls

I actually used to think I hated chocolate milk balls, but my adult tastebuds must have matured at some point.

Milk Chocolate Malt Balls

I am always pleasantly surprised when chocolate arrives in the mail unscathed! These were pretty much in perfect shape and tasted great too.

Finally, since SugarlyBox does reference a weight in their FAQ (1 pound for the 3 pack, and 3 pounds for the 9 pack), I decided to see if we actually received 1 pound of candy in this box. And... we did not. I weighed the candies combined instead of separately, and came up with about 11 ounces total not including the plastic containers. The overall cost per pound for this box ended up being comparable to Candy Club.

Verdict: SugarlyBox seems to have some pros and cons. In the Pros column: It's much more affordable ($11.99 + $5.50 shipping, or $17.49/month total), and I personally thought the presentation was excellent and more higher-end, making it more suitable for personal and corporate gifting. On the other hand: The containers are on the small side so they didn't meet the 1 pound weight stated in their FAQ, and the missing nutritional info seemed odd as well. There is also no customization with this subscription.

While this isn't a subscription I'd buy for myself necessarily, I think it could be a fun gift idea for the right person, especially if I didn't have time to buy and assemble something really cute on my own.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Candies appear to be sent at random, so you'll likely get a different mix if you subscribe now.

Value Breakdown: At $17.49 for this box on the month-to-month plan, you're paying about $25.44 per pound of candy.

I love that the candy was weighed! The candy subs in general seem so shady, and I can’t get my head around the price at all. Candy is ubiquitous and has no resale profitability on Ebay like beauty or fashion items. Outside of shipping cost, these should be the cheapest subs of them all.

Not if the candy is of very high quality that you can’t buy in normal stores (this box doesn’t seem to be that, but I’m just saying that candy shouldn’t necessarily be cheaper because good ingredients and techniques cost money) I also don’t really thing resale value should have an impact on cost; market value of the items should but I’m not sure if you meant that.

The gummy bears come from the Albanese Candy Co. In Merrillville Indiana, my home state. They have their own candy factory & most people I’ve spoken to who have tried them prefer them over any other brand. It’s nice because each color of bear is a distinct flavor & they’re packaging lists the 12 available flavors. Even better, at the factory you can buy almost every type of candy out there and their fresh “turtles” are to die for. Happy to see a “local” business in a national subscription box.

I would buy this for a gift to send to someone that lived a distance. Presentation is cute and the candy is fresh.
