Parabo Box by Parabo Press August Unboxing & Review

One of the things I love about this box is how lovely the unboxing experience is. The outside of each box is designed to go along with the interior contents, so it's always exciting to see it arrive in the mail!

We received this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Parabo's "On the Go" travel themed box is a winner!

August 2018 Review - "On the Go"

August Artwork

Since Parabo has made a name for themselves in the custom photo printing business, it should be no surprise that this box usually comes with a nice seasonal print. This one mixes a bit of pattern play with a photo. And on the back:

On the reverse: information about this month's theme

They print this month's theme and information about the items in the box! This month's box is all about travel (perfect for back to school time!).

Green canvas tote

Green Canvas Zipper Tote

This is a nice sized zipper tote, about 14" x 12" x 3.5". I personally way prefer this boxy shape for totes, which gives them more structure. How beautiful is this shade of green?

Green canvas tote

The bag has two types of straps: an adjustable cross-body strap and a pair of standard tote-sized handles as well.

My only real complaint about this bag is that the inside edges of the canvas unravel easily and aren't covered or hemmed in any way, so the threads keep getting stuck in the zipper.

Green canvas tote

There are two metal zippers, one across the top and a smaller pocket on the outside that is perfect for your phone or keys etc, so you don't lose them inside the bigger compartment.

I've been using this tote for a few days and other than the unraveling thread issue, I am really into it. I'm even considering waxing the canvas so that it will be waterproof and take on a nice weathered look.

Zip pouch

Canvas Zipper Pouch

They also included a matching zipper pouch.

Zip pouch

Parabo suggests using this for pencils and other small items you want to take along on your adventures (but I'll probably end up using it as an oversized change purse!).

Glass Water Bottle

Glass Water Bottle

I gave up reusable plastic bottles in favor of a stainless steel tumbler last year, but glass is always a great alternative– and this one is super nice looking! I love the bamboo lid and the grey silicone sleeve.

Glass Water Bottle

Overall, it's a nice trendy and modern design that fits in well with the vibe of this subscription overall. I feel like all of the items I've received from Parabo Box have been well-designed with a more minimal aesthetic, and not typically items I see in a lot of other boxes.

Glass Water Bottle

The lid is a nice secure screw top too. I'm personally a little skittish about carrying a glass bottle around everywhere, but my current travel mug has an open top. I can definitely see myself trading it for this when I need a bottle I can put into a bag until I reach my destination.

Customized photo notebook

Custom Photo Journal

How serendipitous that I picked a travel photo this month, for a travel-themed box! I am a sucker for a fresh new blank notebook so I'm always happy to add a new one to my arsenal.

Customized photo notebook

The pages are ruled and the endpapers look to be custom too (they match the design on the outside of the box this month).

Customized photo notebook

Parabo always sends a custom photo item in each box. You can select the photo, but you won't know what the item will be until you actually open the box yourself! I picked a vacation photo from last year for this box, and I am loving this image in this context.

One of the cool things about this subscription is that the products aren't always things you can actually order from Parabo Press. This notebook isn't something you can currently buy (although they have plenty of other photo book options).

Power Bank

Photojojo Power Bank

This seems like a really sturdy power bank! According to the info card, it should hold up to 5 full charges.

Power Bank

(Photojojo is (was?) the company that actually started Parabo Press. They used to sell a lot of really cool iPhone lenses and smartphone camera accessories, but it looks like they are all rolling into the Parabo Press brand and shop now.)

Power Bank

I have about three power banks around that I've gotten for free already, as they seem to be rather popular branded gifts at conferences I've been to in the last few years. This one seems sturdier than the rest and I like the simple design.

Power Bank

The cloth-covered cable is a nice touch, too. I do wish it came in a carrying case...but maybe I'll keep this guy in my pencil pouch instead!

Finally, Parabo also sent us a coupon this month:

Power Bank Power Bank

I've ordered a number of different prints from Parabo Press and I've always been happy with the quality and styling, so this is definitely the rare subscription box coupon I'll actually use.

Verdict: This month is the first time that Parabo Box has gone a bit beyond the "home decor" theme, literally changing things up to be oriented around getting outside. 🙂 I personally thought this was a nice fall-appropriate box that feels a little like back-to-school for adults! And I mean that in the best way. I love the modern and minimal styling that Parabo always has, and I'll actually use every item shipped this month, too.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, this box is currently shipping while supplies last! (You can contact Parabo before you sign up to be absolutely sure which box you'll receive.)

Value Breakdown: I received 4 items this month (counting the tote and zipper pouch as one item here), so each item was about $9.75. I also received a $10 coupon which I'll actually use, so that adds to the value a bit for me as well. It's not the highest value Parabo Box I've ever gotten for sure, but I'm still happy with these items and am actively using all of them already!

Just out of curiosity, anyone know what the free gift with your first box is? (or does it vary?)

I tried to get the box and it said I was waitlisted 🙁
If anyone would like to part with that glorious tote please let me know!

Oh no, sorry about that! Hope you’re off waitlist soon!

Me

I am so interested in this box. Does it have to be an Instagram account? I have a ton of photos on Facebook or even on my phone, but I think I’ve posted maybe 7 or 8 photos on my IG account in the last 5 years.

They also have an option where you can e-mail a photo into them! They send a reminder to select a photo before every box ships.

To solve the problem with the strings getting in the zipper pull: Go to a fabric store and get some FrayCheck (think I spelled it correctly). It is liquid. Clip the excess strings, apply Fraycheck, let dry and use.

Lacey,

How do you feel the quality of the prints are? Thanks!

Outside of the subscription? I’ve mostly ordered newsprints and square prints from them, and I think the quality on both is great for the price. The square prints come in a nice little zipper pouch too (at least they did last time I ordered!) which is nice to keep them organized. I’ve also done an engineer print and was super happy with it, but since those are blown up so big they do tend to be a little grainy. The shipping times for prints can be a little long though, so as long as you’re prepared for that, I think it’s a good deal. 🙂 Hope that helps!

Solid box – I especially like the tote and notebook. I appreciate that their concept is unique and that there will always be a personalized item. It’s always nice when a box can be functional as well as aesthetic!

I don’t love any of the items in this box and have 0 use for a notebook and yet I still love this box! The quality of the items is great. It’s minimal and classy. This is becoming one of my favorite boxes.
