Lillypost is a monthly children’s book subscription! They offer three subscription options: The Picture Book Box that includes 3 books for ages 4-7, The Board Book Box that includes 3 books for ages 0-3, or the Mixed Book Box that includes 1 board book and 2 picture books for all ages. From Lillypost:

For every box that is purchased, Lillypost will be donating one book to a child in need through various literacy-based charities.

This review is of the Mixed Book box for $19.99 a month. This option includes both board books and picture books for families with children in both age ranges.

You can choose to have your books wrapped each month for an extra $5.00 per shipment. The paper is always nice, thick quality and often features their signature Lillypost fox. I think this makes receiving our books just a bit more special each month.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Lillypost September 2018 Review

Lillypost included this little note that introduces their new coloring contests. Kids can draw directly on the box and incorporate Finnley the Fox into the monthly theme, then share it on social media for a chance to win a prize. This month’s theme is Dinosaurs and I love that they included some fun facts too!

This month they included this beautifully illustrated card to tell us that it's their second birthday! I love knowing that they have donated over 20,000 books. That's pretty awesome!

My Book of Counting by Britta Teckentrup - Retail Value $8.99

I couldn't locate this exact book, but this looks the same, just a different cover. This is a cute counting board book with lots of colorful animals throughout. I really liked that the text was longer than most counting board books and that it rhymed. I also thought it was great that there were so many opportunities for counting on the pages that followed. This is great for practice and the many animals are perfect for children to look at and identify as you read.

Simon's New Bed by Christian Trimmer - Retail Value $17.99 (found on sale here for $16.19)

Simon is very excited about his brand new bed. He thinks that he is about to have the best nap of his life, until Miss Adora Belle the cat comes and takes it over before he even gets a chance to lay down. Poor Simon makes several attempts to get her out of his bed and even resorts to begging before he succumbs and finally decides to just let her share his bed.

This was a cute story with some subtle humor, such as his hydration coming from the toilet water and the name of the cat being Miss Adora Belle. The illustrations in this story were great and I used them a lot to have my daughter make inferences about what was happening and what might happen next. I'm not sure I'm so happy with the resolution, as the cat didn't get up even after he asked nicely, but it was sweet that they ended up sharing in the end.

Pine & Boof: The Lucky Leaf by Ross Burach - Retail Value $17.99 (found here for $11.48)

This is the story of Boof, a timid bear who likes to collect things and his lucky red leaf that blows away one day. As he is looking for his leaf, he meets Pine, the porcupine, who decides to help him search for his leaf. The two begin an adventure with quite a few mishaps and while they don't recover the leaf, they instead become great friends.

I really loved the style of this book! The writing, the illustrations and how goofy the humor was. The story was really cute, with just enough misadventures to keep kids laughing and the length was perfect. The story itself was interesting and I loved that the text would get larger for moments of excitement. The last page of the book features Boof's scrapbook in which he collects photos of their adventure, which I thought was a unique and cute way to finish up the story. A fun read and definitely our favorite of the bunch. We are definitely looking forward to reading more about these great characters!

Verdict: This was another great Lillypost box this month. It was the perfect mix of books to appeal to my two- and four-year-old and I'm happy we were introduced to the author of Pine & Boof whom I had never heard of before. We enjoyed reading these together and have already added them into our bedtime rotation for the week. The cost of the box was $24.90 ($19.95 + $4.95 shipping) and the total retail value of the books came to $44.97 (less with sale prices) which is a great value for the books that we received this month!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

That Pine & Boof is so adorable I think I am going to buy a copy for the library of the school where I teach on Saturdays. And another one to keep myself!
