"Home Sweet Home" August 2018 Doki Doki by Japan Crate Review

Doki Doki August 2018 Pamphlet back

The illustration on the cover of this month’s pamphlet is adorable! I also love reading the comic strip on the back cover. “Home Sweet Home” is the theme for this month - here’s hoping the items inside are as cozy as the cover illustration.

Doki Doki August 2018 Straw

Sanrio Straw

A friend of mine takes a stainless straw with her everywhere, so that if she ends up at a restaurant or with a drink, she doesn’t have to get a disposable one! I’m all for anyone who needs a straw having access to one, but I think I might join her and start carrying this one around with me, even though it’s a bit wilder than a regular silver one! I received the My Melody variety - you can see her little ear and bow outlined perfectly in the purple plastic, making it an awesome ice-breaker.

Doki Doki August 2018 Chopticks pkg

Little Twin Stars Cooking Chopsticks

Anyone else spend hours at night, watching Tasty Japan videos on their phone in bed when they should be asleep? Ahem, right, sure - me, neither! However, if I did watch those videos like it was my job, I would’ve always wondered about the larger chopsticks that are used when cooking in those videos. One of my hidden talents is some major chopstick dexterity, so. I can’t wait to implement these in my kitchen, with their nice long length and sturdy, silicone-topped ends!

Shiba Sauce Dish

I try my hardest to cook most nights of the week, but when I’m in a treat-myself mood, I almost always go for sushi delivery - it just feels so decadent to me! I always grab a beautiful serving platter, my favorite chopsticks, and even if I’m just eating in front of Netflix, I savor the experience by taking the time to plate my meal. This sauce dish is the perfect addition to my ritual, and it’s absolutely adorable! I like how shallow it is, making it perfect for dipping pieces of sashimi into soy sauce, or dumplings into a ginger sauce.

Doki Doki August 2018 Floor mat

Sumiiko Gurashi Floor Mat

Oh, the coziness! I received a very colorful design on my mat, and dear readers - it’s so soft. It’s a nice homey touch, so I tucked it into our guest room, right next to the bed, so that anyone who sleeps in there will have a very soft greeting to their feet when they wake up!

Doki Doki August 2018 Bowl side Doki Doki August 2018 Bowl hand

San-X Bamboo Bowl

I was introduced to fancy ramen this year, and I love it! Even when it’s hot out, I find it so comforting and a great meal when I’m in the mood for something super savory. I would love to attempt my own version of the dish, with lots of wood ear mushrooms and a slow-cooked egg. This eco-friendly bowl would be perfect for serving my creation! I received the Sumiko option of this bowl, and I appreciated the pamphlet letting me know I should keep this out of the dishwasher and microwave.

VerdictThere’s no place like home, thanks to Doki Doki and these awesome goodies! Everything seems well-made and I liked how they all related to the theme of the box. I was able to put all of these items to use in my house, mostly my kitchen, and I think they’ll really last into the cooler months as I continue with more rituals of coziness. I’m excited about ramen and trying new cooking techniques with the bowl and chopsticks, the floor mat is going to make all my futures guests so happy, and the soy sauce dish will be my new favorite part of my take-out tradition!
