Degustabox September 2018 Review

Degustabox always has a really nice info sheet that goes over each item included in the box with their retail values. This month's theme is "Lunchbox".

The back is different each month but a word search is a common thing to see on the back.

There are usually coupons in each box as well. This one is for High Brew which I tried in last month's box.

There's a BOGO coupon for the Marquis energy drink that makes an appearance in this box.

And a recipe to use your Tiger Tail Mustard with.

Let's get to the foooood!

PB Crave Peanut Butter Spread in Sweet & Dark Chocolate and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, 1.15 oz. x 2 - Total Listed Retail Value: $2.20 (Buy a box of 10 for $9.00)

You really can't go wrong with flavored peanut butter in my opinion. Perhaps a bold move since a lot of people have peanut allergies, but I luckily do not so I am all about it. I tried the cookie dough one and maaaaan is it creamy and delicious. Perfect on toast for a morning snack or to put in a smoothie! I like these single serving packets since it takes me literal years to get through a jar of peanut butter on my own. Can't wait to try the sweet & dark chocolate version next!

The Chia Company Chia Shots, 8 g x2 - Total Listed Retail Value: $1.98 (Buy a pack of 10 for $5.99, found on sale here for $5.69)

More single serving packets = a great thing for me. These also happen to be a great smoothie addition and that's exactly how I used one of these. You can also sprinkle them on a salad, in oatmeal, etc. Each packet has 8 grams of chia seed that delivers omega 3, dietary fiber, protein, and antioxidants. My Dad got really into chia about 15 years ago and it's stuck in my brain as a power food.

SunRype Fruit to Go in Apple Strawberry, 0.5 oz. x2 - Total Listed Retail Value: $1.00 (Buy a case of 55 for $19.99, found on sale here for $18.99)

Fruit leathers are always welcome and make especially great snacks for road trips or in a lunch. These come perforated so that you can pull them apart into strips for a more fun experience but I thought they were a bit too sticky so I opted to just eat them as is while using the wrapper to hold it with to cut down on messiness. These are really tasty and are gluten free, nut free, and vegan. There's no added sugar, just the ones naturally occurring in the fruit, so these taste like actual fruit!

Garden of Life Gōl Bar in Chocolate Sea Salt, 2.11 oz. - Listed Retail Value $2.49 (Buy a case of 12 for $25.97, found on sale here for $27.34)

As far as protein bars go, this one doesn't taste too bad at all. It's slightly dry, but has a super chocolatey flavor and is a pretty enjoyable way to get 12 grams of protein. It's also super chewy and soft. The bar is made with organic ingredients like milk protein, cashews, dates, chocolate, and sea salt, among others. If I'm at the grocery store looking for a bar to grab before a hike, I'd grab one of these for sure.

Mighty Spark Food Co. Chicken Snack Stick in Honey Jalapeno and Cranberry Ginger, 1 oz. x2 - Total Listed Retail Value: $3.00 (Buy a pack of 12 for $20.00)

Bring on the meat snacks! I decided to check out the honey jalapeno flavor and it's really darn good. The consistency is a bit...wet but it's snappy and tastes nice n fresh. There's a hint of spice but nothing that I don't think the average person couldn't handle. I can taste the sweetness of the honey as well and it's a great snackin' size.

Marquis Organic Energy Drink in Citrus Yuzu, 12 oz. - Listed Retail Value $2.89 (Buy a 6 pack for $20.00)

Nope. Nope nope nope. I do not like this on a shelf, I do not like this in myself. I'm not an energy drink person from the start, so this just isn't my bag. Although the "green tea and yerba mate" sounded alluring, this uses some sort of sugar substitute that has a gnarly aftertaste and I cannot hang.

Tigertail Classic Medium Mustard, 3.88 oz. - Listed Retail Value $1.00 (Found here for $1.99, though the size is not specified)

Degustabox has been pushing Tigertail pretty hard over the last few months it seems, but I am alright with that. I really like "German style" mustard even though hot dogs or hamburgers are really the only time I usually go for it. This has a nice spicy zip to it that's pretty vinegar-y. I'm also a sucker for condiments in tubes. It seems really European to me or something, hahaha. I think this is a solid addition to the box.

Bauducco Chocolate Wafers, 5.82 oz. - Listed Retail Value $2.50 (Buy a pack of 3 for $11.81)

If you've read a lot of my food reviews, you know that I love wafers like this. It never fails to impress me how many different forms these delicious things come in. These are light and crispy with creamy soft chocolate cream in between each layer of flakey wafer goodness. Like I always say, I can eat an entire sleeve/bag/container of these in one sitting with no problem.

Hippeas Organic Chickpea Puffs in Vegan White Cheddar and Happen' Hickory, 1.5 oz. x2 - Buy a 4 oz. bag for $3.99, found here for $3.54

Hippeas is another brand that seems to pop up a lot in Degustabox but try as they might, I will never like them. The vegan white cheddar is a favorite to some coworkers, but it tastes like cardboard to me. The Happenin' Hickory is an improvement, but I still don't care for these puffs. 🙁

Idahoan Foods Mashed Potatoes in Classic and Four Cheese, 4 oz. x2 - Total Retail Value $1.68 (Found here for $0.69 and $0.99, respectively)

I'm torn about these potatoes. Y'all know I love pantry food items so I don't have to grocery shop as much, but I also really enjoy making fresh mashed potatoes instead of the boxed flake varieties (even though these are 100% real potatoes). I used to love boxed mashed potatoes as a kid but I haven't used them in years, so this will be a fun throwback to make now and see if they hold up. Cool that they included two kinds as well. I think I'm going to like the four cheese....

Handfulls Crrrunch Bites in BBQ Almonds, 3.75 oz. - Buy a 3 pack for $14.97

Lord have mercy, these are delicious! They're a bit on the messy side, but sure pack a lot of BBQ flavor. The package describes them as "whole roasted almonds, each wrapped in a crispy crrrunchy rice cracker shell". Super duper yums. These are really easy to eat and have a wonderful smoky flavor.

GoCo Crunchy Coconut Bites, 1.4 oz. - Listed Retail Value $2.99

These are not as sweet as I thought they'd be, probably because there is no added sugar. These little rounds of coconut flakes are made with just tapioca starch, salt, and chia seeds. Super addictive, and perfect for coconut lovers like myself who want a healthier snack in the mid-afternoon.

Marion's Kitchen Kung Pao Meal Kit - Retail Value $7.99

This is a really great idea! You probably have noticed that I like "meal kits" (see my Home Chef and Blue Apron reviews) and while this boxed kit is quite different, I like the idea of a guided meal so I don't have to buy all of the separate ingredients and try to come up with something for dinner. With this kit, you'll just need a protein (meat or seafood suggested), 1 red pepper, and some scallions. The box promises this to be ready in just 15 minutes which at the very least is half the time of a full delivered meal kit timeline. Very excited to try this soon!

The Better Chip in Jalapeno and Cilantro, 6.4 oz. - Get 3 bags for $17.75

These are one of my favorite items this month. Great snackable crackers alone but would be amazing with guacamole! My friends and I tore through these one night and were surprised at how spicy they were! I would definitely purchase these again and use them with a cheese and meat tray.

Verdict: Degustabox sent me a lot of healthier choices this month, along with some pantry items and really addictive snacks. My favorites are probably the coconut bites, better chips, and wafers. Almost all of this will get eaten by me, so I will deem this month a success!
