clean.fit box September 2018 Review

This box is relatively new to me so I didn’t know what to expect. But I just want to say right now, I went into it with a positive attitude. I have wanted, since I first learned about subscription boxes, a box with snacks for vegetarians that was not vegan (I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 25 years as of this month and sometimes I just want honey or dairy or something, you know?) and this is the first one I have ever come across:

There was an information booklet with more information on the brands and products in the box. There was a coupon, too, and some product literature.

Nature’s Bandits in Apple (1 oz) - Buy a variety pack of 30 bags for $32.91

I have had these before from somewhere (maybe Love with Food? It seems like a Love with Food item, though they are also vegan). Anyway, if you like fruit snacks, you will probably enjoy these. These are mostly apple ingredients but there is a little carrot and pumpkin in there, more than most snacks that purport to have vegetables in them (it probably helps that they are sweet vegetables). I was not worried about my dental work at any time when consuming these.

Nature’s Bandits in Mixed Berry (1 oz x 2) – Buy a variety pack of 30 bags for $32.91

These are pretty similar to the others although the flavor is slightly different (they still do have a lot of apple) and the color is different as well. There is not a ton of nutrition here (no fat, less than 1 g protein, 1 g fiber, etc.) although they are also not high in calories and the sugars are all natural fruit sugars.

Eat Clean Meal Prep Kung Pao Seasoning (3.2 oz)

Eat Clean Meal Prep Kung Pao Seasoning (3.2 oz) – Retail Value $9.99 (found here for $7.49)

This is the second time I’ve received a spice mix in this subscription, but it’s different from the other one, so I am OK with that. One thing that is nice about it is that it does not have added sodium. I recently ordered the Kung Pao spaghetti from California Pizza Kitchen (sans meat) and, while I liked the flavors, I found it far too sweet and oily and it didn’t sit well with me, so I think what we are going to do is try to recreate it at home using this seasoning mix and a lot less oil. (We do grocery shopping on Saturday so pantry items that arrive in the middle of the week usually have to wait a while for a test run.)

Gomacro Macrobar Everlasting Joy (2.3 oz x 2) – Buy 12 bars for $34.68

It took me like two days to realize these are called “everlasting JOY” because they have almonds and coconut in them like Almond Joy bars. Anyway, they are pretty tasty (if a bit high calorie) and I think this is my first time trying this particular flavor, even though I have had Macrobars before from other subscriptions. If you just want to try one, I’ve seen singles for sale at Whole Foods in several flavors.

Gomacro Macrobar Protein Pleasure (2.4 oz x 2) – Buy 12 bars for $34.68

These are pretty tasty. I don’t buy them on my own because they’re almost 300 calories each (I prefer low 200s for protein bar calories). But I do really enjoy the texture and they’re suitable for several different allergies/specialty diets, being kosher, non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, organic, and soy-free. If I had to pick one thing to change, though, it would be to add less sugar and more fiber (but then, you probably can’t do that without adding sugar alcohols, which doesn’t really fit with this brand’s image).

Lesser Evil Buddha Bowl Himalayan Gold Popcorn (0.88 oz)

Lesser Evil Buddha Bowl Himalayan Gold Popcorn (0.88 oz) – Buy 18 bags for $17.99

This is a vegan product (cooked in coconut oil) but with a butter flavor. For a product of that nature, I’d actually say they do a pretty good job with the flavor. There is new evidence that coconut oil is not so great for you as previously thought, but I would think that consumed in moderation, in conjunction with a whole grain like popcorn, it’s probably not too bad. I’m actually kind of glad to get this instead of the sea salt flavor for once! (Now if I could just get a box to send me the cheese flavor, I think I’d be really happy.)

MS Prebiotic (7 pouches) – Buy 1 pound for $38.95

Prebiotics are substances that promote a healthy environment for gut bacteria. I actually also received this same item in Bulu Box this month and it included the little scoop that is discussed in the product instructions, so now I have that. This is the kind of thing that takes a while to see results (you don’t just fix gut bacteria overnight) although the first day’s drink was palatable. (You do increase the amount of product over time so I don’t know if day 4 or 5 will still be OK.) I think this is mostly potato starch, though and I don’t know if I’d pay almost $40 for a bag of potato starch.

Squeeze Dried Apple Cider Vinegar (6 pouches)

Squeeze Dried Apple Cider Vinegar (6 pouches) – Buy a 30-day supply for $47

If this is a product you are considering, there is a free sample available and I’d strongly suggest ordering and trying that, then setting up a subscription, because you will save a lot of money that way. Anyway, I am skeptical of any and all health claims related to apple cider vinegar. It is unlikely to hurt you unless you are taking diuretics or have diabetes (it may make blood sugar harder to control) or have trouble regulating your potassium levels. But there’s just not much science supporting all the benefits people ascribe to it. Also, this particular product uses the word “cleansing” which is a major red flag for me as cleanses are also not based on any actual science. This does have probiotics but it doesn’t say *what* the bacteria are or how many colony forming units (a unit of measure for bacteria) are included, which is problematic for me.

Also, for what it’s worth, I am not really a fan of the flavor of this stuff mixed with straight water. It’s like I can feel the enamel-eroding off my teeth to drink it, too. I gave it a try, but this product is really not for me.

Verdict: The September clean.fit box had 11 items (counting the apple cider vinegar packets as 1 item since you can get them as free samples, and multiples of bars, etc., as 2 items) which makes the average cost per item about $3.18 (figuring a $34.95 cost for the box). You will notice from the list of prices above that quite a few of the items had values higher than that, so I feel like it averages out and you are generally getting a good deal. This month did have a lot of items I’ve tried before or received in other subscription boxes (Nature’s Bandits, Macrobars, MS Prebiotics), but I review at least 4 snack boxes and some fitness boxes and so I see a lot more subscription box snacks than most people
