BariatricPal box

Bariatric Pal is an online marketplace for everything a weight-loss surgery patient would need. Of course, almost all of their offerings are great for anyone looking for healthier alternatives, especially if their dietary preference is low-carb and high-protein. They recently started to offer a Box of the Month subscription box!

Bariatric Pal August 2018 Review

BariatricPal info sheet 1

This box came with a very detailed info sheet with more information about the products.

BariatricPal info sheet 2

The nutrition facts and cooking instructions for the soup were on the back of the info sheet.

BariatricPal cookie 1 BariatricPal cookie 2

My Protein Bites Cookies in Chocolate Chip, 1 pack – Retail Value $3.99 (found on sale here for $3.49)

These cookies are high in protein and decently low carb, coming in with 8 grams of protein and 7 grams of net carbs. Overall I thought the flavor was pretty good, and I recommend heating it in the microwave for a few seconds to make the chocolate a little ooey and gooey. They were surprisingly soft for a packaged protein cookie, and they would be delicious dunked in some milk. My biggest complaint is that one serving is one cookie, and this comes in a pack of three. Temptation like that isn’t nice!

BariatricPal garlic

Simply Beyond Organic Spray on Herbs in Garlic, 3 oz – Retail Value $9.99

As both a lover of cooking and a lover of garlic, when I pulled this out of the box I shuddered a little bit. Then, I realized all of the possibilities! This garlic spray would be perfect on bread before toasting in the oven, or before roasting veggies as well. I thought the garlic flavor was solid, and now I am thinking of all of the possibilities.

BariatricPal chocolate 1 BariatricPal chocolate 2

HealthSmart Sweet Nothings Candies in Caramel Pecan Clusters, 84 grams – Retail Value $4.49

Oh, baby, these are so good! They taste just like a sinfully delicious caramel pecan cluster, only each piece only has 3 grams of net carbs (and 5 grams of dietary fiber!), 1 gram of fat, and only 30 calories a piece. I like that they are individually wrapped, as it helps with the mental battle of only having just one piece of chocolate.

BariatricPal liquid

NeoPro 35 g Clinical Strength Liquid Protein in Fruit Punch, 3.8 oz – Retail Value $3.49 (found on sale here for $2.99)

This little bottle is liquid gold! This is perfect when you are trying to get enough protein, as one bottle contains zero carbs and 35(!!) grams of protein. I really don’t like the tastes of most protein drinks, so I was happy that this small size makes it easy to drink and move on.

BariatricPal bitlong

Stryve Foods Beef Biltong Sticks in Original - Retail Value $3.49 (found on sale here for $2.99)

There is just something about meat sticks that do not do it for me. This has no sugar and 15 grams of protein, so this is great for a high protein snack to keep you full!

BariatricPal drink blend

Bariatric Pal Cold Fruit Protein Drinks, 2 packs – Buy a box of 7 for $13.49

I haven’t been able to find a protein drink mix that doesn’t taste weird, and sadly these did not change my tastebuds mind on the matter. These would be good mixed with regular or diet cranberry juice, however, to try and mask that aftertaste while still getting 12 grams of protein!

BariatricPal chicken

Bariatric Fusion Meal Replacement in Chicken Soup - Retail Value $3.49

Chicken soup is one of those things that whenever I want it or need it because I am sick, I never have it on hand. This takes care of that, as it is easy to store and mixes well with warm water. One serving is 160 calories, has 27 (!!) grams of protein, and only 5 grams of net carbs. This is a great way for liquid only diets while still getting to that hard to reach protein goal!

BariatricPal pudding

Bariatric Pal Protein Pudding in Double Chocolate, 2 packs – Buy a box of 7 for $13.49

Normally I don’t like chocolate flavored things, but chocolate pudding has always been an exception. The quintessential childhood dessert makes me nostalgic every time I see it, but this version is packed with 15 grams of protein and only 3 grams of net carbs!

BariatricPal broth 1 BariatricPal broth 2

Millie’s Sipping Broth in Tomato Basil - Retail Value $8.75

These kind of scare me. The ingredients are tomatoes, basil, herbs and spices, vegetables, and…. Green tea? While I like the idea of sipping broth I don't know how much I can get behind combining broth with green tea. One serving only has 15 calories, so this would be a good thing to sip on when you are hungry but it's not mealtime, or if you just want to sip on something other than water!

BariatricPal chili

Bariatric Pal High Protein Light Entrée in Vegetable Chili, 2 packs – Buy a box of 7 for $13.49

I like chili, and this has beans in it! I know there are a lot of people who do not believe beans belong in chili, but I am not one of those people. This can be heated up in minutes on both the stove top and microwave, and one serving has 15 grams of protein and only three grams of net carbs.

The Verdict: I am not a bariatric patient, but I am trying to focus more on eating high protein, low carb items. I think this box is great for anyone who is trying to get more protein in their diet, and it is fun to try the wide variety of products that Bariatric Pal includes each month. This is also a pretty good value—the box costs $39.95 and it promises to have a value of at least $50. By subscribing you don’t have to take a risk and buy in bulk and end up not liking something for a relatively low price-per-item. My favorites this month were the protein cookies, the chocolate, the chicken soup, and the chili!

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? No, but I think you can get the September box! Boxes ship around the 24th of each month.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $39.95 + free shipping, which means that each of the 10 items in the box has an average cost of $3.99

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

You didn’t comment on the taste of quite a few things – Vegetable Chili, Sipping Broth, Pudding, Chicken Soup. Did you try them?

I was also wondering about this. Maybe there were time constraints but the review really isn’t thorough when 4 items were merely removed from the box with only a description– food items especially need to be sampled…

I was also wondering about flavor, as well as how the finished product appears and what the texture is like – I’d like to see how the tomato broth looks when prepared, as well as the consistencies of the chicken soup and the pudding.

I was wondering the same thing

The Spray On Herbs is great for pan searing tofu.

Great review, as always.

I don’t really understand this sub. If someone is trying to lose weight/eat healthy, getting a box full of highly processed foods is not a good thing. I’m all for “treating” myself to sweets in moderation but I would never eat a processed, protein cookie. To me it’s a waste of calories.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing! And o so much processed, chemical fake stuff…yuck! Seems like to me it would be a slippery slope replacing cherished food items with fake ones..I do have a weight issue and battle it ongoing…I’m afraid a “protein cookie” would trigger overeating for me. I’m glad there must be someone out there who can eat these things and be successful but it isn’t for me.

This is for someone recovering from bariatric surgery mostly. The phases after surgery start off really strict and then ease up as the body heals.

My biggest issue with this box is they seem to be trying to please people in all phases. Someone in the first phase would love the soups and juices and all, but the pudding wouldn’t good until Phase 2 and the cookies wouldn’t work until much later.

I’m with you on not wanting to eat overly processed food, though.
