Winc July 2018 Review
When you sign up to join Winc, you take a short, fun “palate profile” quiz that helps determine your taste in wine. Based on your answers, Winc makes bottle recommendations for you every month. You can go along with their recommendations or choose your own bottles from their regularly changing selection (or skip the month completely).
The bottles come shipped in an upright cardboard box that has formed pieces to secure them in place. This also helps keep the bottles from bumping into one another in transport. The box is pretty dang sturdy and has a solid handle that makes it easy to carry! This box is a real party on the go!
Hey there, buddies! Looks like you made it in one piece!

2017 Cocomero Rosé—Retail Value $18.99 (or $15 through subscription)
California, USA
Body: Light
Sweetness: dry
Alcohol: 12.5%
Winemaking: Eco-friendly
If you like sweet, fruity wines, this one is for you! My friend had a bachelorette party on a pontoon boat, so we drank this on a warm summer day on the river. The label is incredibly whimsical and is Winc’s first scratch and sniff wine label! Wild! Cocomero is Italian for Watermelon and the flavor of the melon is front and center in this wine with hints of rhubarb and honeysuckle as well. This would pair well with a light meal like sushi or a bowl of fruit.
2017 Zwicker White Blend — Retail Value $18.99 (or $15 through subscription)
Central California, USA
Body: Light
Sweetness: slightly sweet
Alcohol: 12%
Winemaking: Eco-friendly, vegan
This white blend features Riesling and Gewürztraminer grapes and is fermented in stainless steel. The result is a rather pure, light bodied wine with notes of lychee, lemon, rose petal, and honeysuckle. It is a rather delightful and delicate flavor that pairs well with light summer dishes like fish, sushi, veggies, and Thai food. I can imagine having some Pad Thai outside on a deck while sipping this wine after a long day at work.
2016 Far + Wide Frappato — Retail Value $16.99 (or $13 through subscription)
IGT Terre Siciliane, Italy
Body: Medium
Sweetness: dry
Alcohol: 12.9%
Winemaking: Eco-friendly, vegan
I generally do not like red wines, but I LOVED this one! This unique, red wine is made from the Frappato grape that is grown in the shadow of Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy. I think I enjoyed this wine because the grape taste was overshadowed by the notes of tart cherry, thyme, and plum. I was surprised to hear it also has pink pepper and tomato leaf in it as well. This wine would pair fantastically with pizza or pasta with red sauce, so pop this open on a Friday night with your favorite slice and a movie as well! Talk about a delightful combo, am I right?
2017 Finke’s Sparkling White Blend — Retail Value $20.99 (or $16 through subscription)
California
Body: Light
Sweetness: dry
Alcohol: 12.5%
Winemaking: Eco-friendly, vegan
I felt fancy popping this sparkling wine! It made my review picture taking session feel like a special occasion! This bubbly, sparkling wine has notes of citrus, apple, and pineapple giving it such a flavorful, yet light flavor. This wine has a blend of Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc grapes that add a floral aroma. I am partial to carbonation and bubbles, so this might be my favorite of the bunch in the July box!
Verdict: I enjoyed all the selections this month, especially since this month included so mainly white and rosé options. The red wine from Far + Wide was delightful even though I am not generally a fan of reds; I am impressed and would buy this one again! Winc has been a fun learning experience for a novice wine drinker such as myself. This box would make a great gift for a newbie that wants to build a knowledge and collection of wines or for an expert that is eager to try a variety of wines at lower price points.
