VetPet Box (Cat Version) August 2018 Review

Every month, VetPet Box sends toys, supplies, and wellness items. The main wellness item this month relates to calming anxiety:

Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box.

There is always educational material in a full-color, fold-out brochure that is sturdy enough for storage and later reference. Once again, this booklet makes the suggestion that you should have one litter box per cat, plus one extra, and I did recently get a sixth litter box. However, it also seems to expect that cats will know which is *their* box and stick to using only it. Which is most definitely not true. But mostly, the advice is sensible.

Cat Love Zingers! Star Shape – Listed Value $4.99

Cat Love Zingers! Heart Shape – Listed Value $4.99

I couldn’t find these for sale from a US source so I used the values from the information card. These are compressed catnip, which many of my cats are fans of. Their preferred interaction style is licking/biting (even Mr. Kitty gets in on the action, though I didn’t get a photo of it this time), but hey, whatever works.

My Little Lion Totally Tuna Recipe (2.65 oz) – Retail Value $4.32 (found here for $2.49)

These are soft treats and they are some of my cats’ favorites. We get them often in VetPet Box but I don’t care because most of the cats love them (and I’m sure Mr. Kitty would also love them if he was allowed to have them). They don’t smell too fishy, either.

Multipet “Look Who’s Talking” Frog

Multipet “Look Who’s Talking” Frog – Estimated Value $4.49

I could find the chicken version of this toy at Chewy.com (linked to below) but not the frog, so I’ve given the MSRP for the chicken since these are from the same product line. This is a small plush toy that makes noise when it is moved. They are pretty cute, also. Angus takes some interest in these so I have put them in our home office (i.e., away from the bedroom where someone would surely find them at night and wake us up!).

Multipet “Look Who’s Talking” Chicken – Retail Value $4.49 (found here for $2.49)

This is pretty similar to the frog in terms of size. It does make a slightly different sound than the frog, more of a chirp. This one is also in the office for Angus to play with at night. (We don’t shut him in there, it’s just enough out of the way that he’s unlikely to bring the toys downstairs for Nyx to eat.)

Havepaws Jerky Chips in Cheeky Chicken (4 oz)

Havepaws Jerky Chips in Cheeky Chicken (4 oz) – Retail Value $6.99

I have received these before and didn’t think my cats would like them, but I was wrong. They were quite popular. The cats can’t eat them when they are whole, but if you break them into small pieces, they get gobbled right up. These are chicken with some B vitamins and taurine added.

Feliway Classic Travel Spray by Ceva (20 mL) – Retail Value $20.59 (found here for $17.36)

This is something I was getting ready to buy anyway because I was almost out of my last bottle. Before I take my cats to the vet, especially Mr. Kitty to the eye doctor, I like to spray this on a towel or blanket and put it on the bottom of the pet carrier. I let it dry for a minute (the spray is alcohol based) and then put the cat in. They’re still a little stressed from being put in the pet carrier, but this helps them calm down a little.

The Pound Bakery Grain Free Chicken Cat Treats (5 oz)

The Pound Bakery Grain Free Chicken Cat Treats (5 oz) – Retail Value $5.99

This is a new brand for me. These are crunchy treats with chicken meal as the first ingredient. There are some starches (potato flour, tapioca, pea protein, yellow peas), but this is really necessary to get a baked treat with this kind of texture. These also have superfood ingredients (i.e., cranberries, spinach, turmeric).  My cats were fans (especially Sneaky and Madison) and that’s all that really matters, though.

CatIt Spinning Bee Interactive Cat Toy – Retail Value $24.99

I had to put some batteries in this (they were not included) but it was totally worth it. My cats normally ignore battery-powered toys but this was a hit. I guess the motion is just irregular enough to keep their interest (some electronic toys are too predictable). This has a laser pointer component in addition to the spinning (which moves the ball and the bee on top) and you can put treats in the bottom, too.

And here are your gratuitous cat photos:

Angus investigates items from the box. He is now out of the cone so I should totally let him see the spinning bee toy again.

Blep.

Madison has the biggest tongue I’ve ever seen on a cat.

He liked this, too. You can see his tooth (which usually only shows when he is happy).

Monkey is interested in the bee toy. Madison is still up on the bed, keeping a safe distance.

You can see the laser pointer dot in this one.

This picture cracks me up.

Monkey investigates one of the compressed catnip toys.

Sneaky and Monkey with the spinning bee toy.

This picture also cracks me up.

Mr. Kitty with the spinning bee. I don’t think he could actually see it (his remaining eye doesn’t work too well) because he sat there and let it hit him in the face repeatedly (so I turned it off). But at least he showed some interest.

And here he is with a compressed catnip toy. (I had to put Nyx in the pen temporarily to keep her from eating cat treats or toys. You can see her paws in the background.)

Verdict: I calculated a value of $81.84 for August’s VetPet Box. That’s one of the best values I have ever seen from this box, and the items were all pretty useful, as well. The spinning bee toy was a particular favorite of pretty much everyone.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? New subscribers usually get an introductory box. However, if you contact Vet Pet Box, you can get a past month’s box (like say you really want to get the dental one more than once, because your cat has bad teeth).

P.S. Angus is back in the cone yet again. He is not healing (well his fur is growing back but his skin is still crusty and he licks at it if given the opportunity). So now we have to try a food trial, but that means a slow transition between food types.

Ragan, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I could just read a blog of your family’s pets!

You get such cute pics of your kitties.

I take dozens and dozens and only show the ones that come out the best here. There are plenty of failures, like someone who has halfway walked out of the shot and only a bit of tail and leg are left, or where the camera hasn’t focused well.
