Random Rosie July 2018 Subscription Box Review

When you sign up, Random Rosie has you take a short survey in order to really personalize your box. For reference, I said I had a kitty named Duchess, no food allergies, and that my passions included hanging out with my family, Arizona sports teams, reading, and subscription boxes. They also asked how I felt about receiving clothing (I said I would prefer no clothing) and how I felt about homemade, antique, or used books (I said books in any form were welcome). With that in mind, let's see how they did!

This box doesn’t come with an info sheet detailing the products, but I did get a thank you card on some adorable cat stationery!

The Long, Hot Summer by Kathleen MacMahon – Retail Value $26 (found here for $10.95)

Oh yay, a book! I love receiving books in subscription boxes because it gives me the opportunity to try new authors I would not have found. This hardcover version is about the trials a family faces. I thumbed through the book and excited to continue reading it. From Amazon:

Nine Lives. Four Generations. One Family. The MacEntees are no ordinary family.
Determined to be different from other people, they have carved out a place for themselves in Irish life by the sheer force of their personalities.

There's Deirdre, the aged matriarch and former star of the stage. Her estranged writer husband Manus now lives with a younger man. Their daughter Alma is an unapologetically ambitious television presenter, while Acushla plays the part of the perfect political wife. And there's Macdara, the fragile and gentle soul of the family. Together, the MacEntees present a glamorous face to the world. But when a series of misfortunes befall them over the course of one long, hot summer, even the MacEntees will struggle to make sense of who they are.

Meow Mix Brushing Bites -

Meow Mix Brushing Bites - Retail Value $3.68 (found here for $2.99)

Oh goody, a treat for Duchess! I think by including cat treats Random Rosie is showing that they really are customizing the boxes to each individual recipient. Duchess liked the way these smelled and I am going to mix a few with her regular food (Duchess is weird about eating treats, even when she likes them). Our vet, Dr. Leonard, says Duchess has perfect teeth and I plan on keeping it that way!

Kashi Dark Mocha Almond Chewy Granola Bar, 1 bar - Buy a 6 ct box for $3.09

Mmmm. Snacks. This granola bar has whole roasted almonds and dark chocolate while still being chewy, which is my preferred type of granola bar. This was a great snack when I wanted something sweet but needed something more substantial than the mini chocolates I had at my desk.

NFL Vintage Arizona Cardinals Sticker

This right here is how I know this box was customized just for me—I LOVE the Arizona Cardinals, and I did mention in my survey that I was a fan of Arizona sports. I am saving this sticker to go on my notebook for the upcoming fall semester and I am thrilled about it.

Elite Essentials Facial Brush - Retail Value $7

My facial brush experiences are limited to the Foreos that have come in Allure (way back when) and FabFitFun, so I was excited at the hopes this could help with some heavy duty face mask removing. While this could definitely do that, I found the bristles to be way too abrasive for my face. The massaging part on the other side of the brush was nice, but that’s nothing new considering I have my Foreo.

Soo ae Charcoal Flower Mask - Estimated Value $5 (buy a set of 5 for $25)

I really like Soo Ae masks - their chin mask is one of my favorites! Because of this, I was not surprised to find that I enjoyed this mask. The charcoal and green tea really helped to calm down some of my natural redness, and it also didn’t leave my face sticky.

Ulta Beauty Matte Metallic Liquid Lipstick in Mysterious (?), travel size – Estimated Value $5 (buy a full-size for $9)

I genuinely have no idea the name of this liquid lipstick or the actual size, but I am rolling with it. This deep berry red with shimmer dries down to a really pretty matte metallic color that I found to be quite lovely. The staying power isn’t revolutionary, but it gets the job done. This would be a great holiday lip color.

La Roche Posay Lipikor Balm, 0.5 oz – Estimated Value $1.12 (buy the full-size version for $14.99)

Holy hydration, Batman- this balm is thicccck! I have been having issues with my cuticles being absolutely insane, and I have been using the tiniest of dabs to hydrate my cuticles and stop the peeling. This would be too thick for my personal use as a full body moisturizer, but if your skin is drier than the Sahara this body balm is what you need.

Honest Beauty Gel Cleanser, 1 oz – Estimated Value $3.60 (buy the full-size version for $18)

This was a standard gel cleanser for me—it helped my skin to get clean, but nothing about it really stood out or made such a difference that would make me want to switch from my current cleanser.

The Verdict: I really liked my first box from Random Rosie! I could really tell that thought and care went into packaging my box, and Duchess is happy that a subscription box thought of her too. Honestly, this box is exactly what I thought Luna Babe would be like—only Random Rosie actually pulled it off. I couldn’t find a value for every item, but the values I could find add up to $51.40. That is a couple dollars over the $49.98 cost of the box ($35 plus $14.98) shipping, and I would like to see that value come up a little bit in future boxes.

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? Boxes are customized to your profile, so what you get will most likely be different!

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

I like the concept, but the price and shipping is absolutely nuts. A full size (5 oz.) bottle of the Honest cleanser is only $12.99, so there is not much of a value here.

I bought this box awhile back with coupon. Value not there canceled immediately.

Is this a joke? The price is beyond ridiculous for what you received. I like the personalization aspect but it isn’t worth half of what they are charging. It looks like someone with lots of subscription box items decided to start a box to get rid of their unwanted items. I can’t see this box lasting long at all.

Random is right! Looks like this box was made up of parts of other boxes and various clearance rack finds.

Wow I didn’t see how much it cost until I got to the end and after seeing all the products first, I legit gasped when I saw the price of the box (and don’t get me started on the shipping)!! There is no way this box could stick around. Yikes!!!

I like the personalization aspect to this box a lot, but I agree with other commenters that the shipping cost is just way too over the top. I do hope you keep reviewing this though, as I’d like to see if the value improves – if the value’s there the shipping cost might seem more palatable.

What might I ask is your normal cleanser ?

Jessica Hapak

Hi Ivy!
My current go-to is the Heimish all clean white clay cleanser. A generous tube came in my March pink Seoul box, and I still have more then half left!

How did they mail you the package? $13.50 is medium flat rate priority and judging by the size of the items it wouldn’t even take that.

Jessica Hapak

Hi Julie!
The box came in a thin grey bag type of packing. It didn’t come inside of a flat rate box, but it was shipped priority mail.

Yikes, with the current market and those shipping costs, I can’t imagine this box survives even the end of summer. With shipping, this costs more than fabfitfun. Great idea for the personalization, but can’t see this having much appeal since value wise isn’t there, and $15 shipping??????

I agree. The personalized aspect is great but there needs to be more value and lower or free shipping. With the big companies coming in 2-5x what we pay for, the little guys need to really stand out or they will go out of business fast.

Jackie

The shipping on this is insane. I can’t even process the actual items in the box because of the shipping cost.

Anna

Yeah 50$ for random items that I could grab at Christmas Tree shoppes cheap isn’t appealing to me, I’m glad you liked it.

The value is definitely there if you get it for free but I’d be disappointed if I paid for it.
