Petco One Membership July 2018 Review
This box came with an info sheet explaining the reasons why cats meow and showing some of the different toys this subscription box will send. Petco is clear about which products will be included when you sign up, so a more detailed information sheet isn’t necessary.
WholeHearted Grain Free Chicken Formula Dry Cat Food, 5 lbs – Retail Value $14.99
Since I first adopted Duchess when she was a few months old I have exclusively fed her Blue Buffalo, and once she graduated from kitten food I have been using the grain-free wilderness line. Because of this, I was pretty impressed with the quality of this cat food. It is grain-free and it actually has probiotics and omega-3s. While I over-analyzed this food, Duchess just happily ate it. It is too soon to tell if the omega-3’s are going to improve her fluffy coat (which, admittedly, is already pretty soft and smooth), but I am happy to report that it hasn’t upset her stomach or caused any digestive issues.
WholeHearted Grain Free Wet Food in Chicken, 5 cans – Estimated Value $4.95 (Buy a 12-pack of 2.8 oz. cans for $11.88)
WholeHearted Grain Free Wet Food in Chicken and Tuna, 5 cans – Estimated Value $4.95 (Buy a 12-pack of 2.8 oz. cans for $11.88)
WholeHearted Grain Free Wet Food in Tuna and Salmon, 5 cans – Estimated Value $4.95 (Buy a 12-pack of 2.8 oz. cans for $11.88)
I feed Duchess exclusively dry food, but I thought I would get the mix of both wet and dry food for this box to get the full experience and also treat Duchess. This has the same great properties as the dry food being grain free with probiotics and omega-3’s, and Duchess LOVED it.
She literally was licking her lips after her first wet food experience. These cans are solid until 2020, so while I am sticking with dry food I now have a stash of special meals for Duchess whenever the need arises (or if I need to disguise medicine in it, though thankfully Duchess does not currently take any).
WholeHearted Soft Center Crunchy Chicken Flavor Treats for Cats, 3 oz – Retail Value $1.99
Duchess is not a big treat kitty—I actually do not buy treats because she never eats them. She loves the way these smelled though, and I think if I put some in her regular meal dish she would happily munch away.
So Phresh Advanced Odor Control Scoopable Fragrance-Free Cat Litter, 30 lbs – Retail Value $10.99
I have never purchased a 30-pound container of litter before, and I am not sure how long this will last in this single kitty household but it will definitely be more than a month. This litter clumps when wet and it does a great job of quelling any smells. My only complaint is it was pretty dusty when I was dumping the litter into the litter box, but that dissipated quickly.
Because of the weight and size, this was not actually included in the box itself, but an online voucher was loaded onto my Petco One profile that showed a barcode for the in-store cashier to scan. With your first month you get the litter and container for free, in future months you re-use the container and take it to Petco for refills. Each month a new voucher is issued to your Petco One account for you to get your monthly refill for free. I love the sustainability aspect of this—but WOW, thirty pounds of litter is heavy! I guess that is unavoidable, and I am sure for busy households this would be super helpful to not have to worry about running out throughout the month—especially if you have more than one kitty in your household!
Leaps & Bounds Fuzzy Mice Cat Toys with Catnip, Pack of 12 – Retail Value $9.99
Each month a new toy will be included for your kitty, and this month we have a 12-pack of mice. Duchess is a bit of a toy snob—some toys she won’t even look at (I am still bummed she never grew attached to the catnip filled crawfish plush I found), and some she is possessively obsessed with. These mice are the all-time holy grail toy for Duchess—she carries these mice around in her mouth and drops them in her food bowl to make sure they eat, drops them on my lap when she is feeling generous, and just generally adores them. These leaps and bounds mice don’t quite live up to the level of the Smarty Kat mice, but these definitely get more love than the sad crawfish. Having so many mice means that I can easily swap new mice in when the old ones get ratty, and when I wake up in the morning these mice are in new places across my apartment.
PetCoach.com Question – Retail Value $8
Petcoach.com is an online resource that connects pet owners with vet techs and licensed veterinarians in order to get help with any pet-related advice. Anyone can ask questions, in order to be immediately connected to a vet and receive a reply within minutes, you need to pay $8. There is a coupon for a free question on your Petco One Membership online account, and that code will waive the fee! This is extremely helpful if you have a pet that is prone to ailments or you’re a first-time pet owner—you can even attach photos when you ask your question to help illustrate what you were talking about. I believe with each month you get a new voucher for a question, and I think this is a really neat feature to be included in this subscription box. I am a confident pet owner (my dad was a veterinarian!), but it is nice to know that if Duchess starts acting funny I can immediately be connected with a vet and access some knowledge.
The Verdict: What an amazing box for cat owners! Petco is a known and trusted brand in the industry, and I am not shocked at all that their subscription box is such a knockout. This box is filled with great staples for cat parents, all of the items included (especially the food!) are of a high quality, and most importantly this box is Duchess approved! I calculated an estimated retail value of $60.81, which I think is an absolute deal considering the purchase price of $35. If you own a cat, staples like cat food and litter are unavoidable purchases. This box gives you an amazing convenience factor of having almost everything shipped to your door while also giving you a great discount on the items. This value will only increase after you’ve been subscribed for a while because once every four months a cat scratcher is also included for your kitty. I am bummed it doesn’t come in the initial box, but that doesn’t detract from the overall box greatness.
To Wrap Up:
Can you get this box if you sign up today? Yes! Sign up and your first box will ship within a few days and on a 30-day cycle from the sign-up date (not at the first of the month).
Value Breakdown: At $35 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:
- Dry food: $8.63
- Wet food: $8.55
- Treats: $1.15
- Litter: $6.33
- Toy: $5.75
