Le Noir Bazaar - The Dark Market July 2018 Review

There was a card included that detailed both the items inside as well as their listed value. I really liked the illustration of the sugar skulls, and the card was high quality with nice resolution printing. The obvious theme here is the skull element to these items, but I think if you look deeper, there’s also a ghoul-babe at the beach kinda vibe! Maybe I’m just dying (get it?) for vacation, but I think that these items will be endlessly useful for a trip I’m taking with my friends next month. Let’s see what all is going to the beach with me, eh?

Skull Shot Glass Set - Listed Value $14

A major theme of discussion for our trip has been centered around margaritas. Maybe a little cliche, or even out of date (are the cool kids drinking frozen rose still? I don’t even know), but we’re all about mixing super-fresh fruit juices with tequila and just chilling on the patio at sunset with our bevvies. I am definitely bringing these shot glasses with us! They’re really nicely made; they have the nice heft of glass so I know they won’t get ruined in my bag, but they aren’t clunky at all, so they won’t take up precious space that I’m reserving for souvenirs.

Skull Beach Towel - Listed Value $18

Possibly my favorite item in the box, this towel isn’t terry cloth like you might expect, but that actually makes it even MORE useful! This is a nice thin, almost gauzy fabric with the floral skulls printed on it. Since it isn’t thick terry, this will be great to use a beach blanket, a blanket to put down for a rest if my friends and I go sailing, and even as a sarong to get me to and from the pool! This matches both my black and green swimsuits, so I think it’s going to be a staple of my stay.

Skull Sunglasses and Case - Listed Value $18

I cannot wait to wear these on the beach, seriously! I love the fearsome skull faces and the fact that anyone who sees me in these will have to do a double-take. These are super-comfortable on, and they’re UV 400 protection, which means they’ll protect me from UVA and UVB rays while I’m hanging out on the beach. This cute case they came in will be perfect for my purse or beach bag so that the lenses don’t get scratched!

Skull Ponytail Holder - Listed Value $5

I tend to wear my hair up when I’m at the pool or beach - it’s super-curly and I like to keep it somewhat tamed! I think this ponytail holder will be up to the challenge; the band seems strong and sturdy, like the typical hair tie I buy, and this skull is such a great design. I think it has a nice balance of not being too cutesy and not being too scary, making a strong statement that really appeals to my aesthetic.

Handmade Freshwater Pearl Ankh Necklace - Listed Value $35

Clearly the showstopper in this box, there is nothing more beachy than these gorgeous freshwater pearls! The ankh is a great symbol for this piece; meaning eternal life, it’s a high-quality pendant that serves as a unique focal point. Unsurprisingly, I’ve always loved black pearls like these freshwater beauties, and these are pleasingly high-end. This necklace will look so beautiful with a nice sundress or even a dressy, summery jumpsuit for a nice dinner out.

Sugar Skull Notecard - Listed Value $4

I’ve mentioned quite a bit my love affair with stationery and note cards, but these ones are the best I’ve encountered in a long time - I want a whole box of them! I love the bright background and blooms paired with the skull; I think the contrast of items works really well, especially with the “painting in process” type of rendering, with some unfinished lines and places with “missing” paint. The only question is, who is going to be the lucky recipient of this beautiful card? (Spoiler: not my 100-year-old great-aunt.)

Bonus Gift: Set of Two Skull Coasters

Even a bonus gift this month! These sugar skull coasters are a perfectly-matched set; I love the colors and I’m always looking for coasters to handle the drinks at my work desks. I’m going to set these out together; one for coffee, one for water!

Verdict: Looks like I’m going to the beach in high Le Noir style! I have grown more and more excited about this box every month, and this was the perfect bit of summer that I’ve really been missing. If you add up the listed prices, the listed value of the box this month is $94, which means I’ve gotten some seriously high-quality items. I was right; all the items in the box are beach-worthy; and will definitely be making it on my trip. I can’t wait to use the skull shot glasses, wrap up in the skull towel, and wear the pearl and ankh necklace for a special vacation night out. Le Noir Bazaar has done it again! I know I say this every month, but I’m so excited for August’s box!

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? Sadly, no! You’ll receive the September box. Boxes ship by the 14th every month.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $35.99 + $7 shipping, which means that each of the 7 items in the box has an average cost of $6.14. Way, way less than what these items are listed as being worth, and way less than I could’ve found them on my own!

Just to clarify: This box has nothing at all to do with or is in any way related to the Corporate Goth box or any other Sub/Cult box. This is a completely different company.

Kelly

It’s an entire box of skulls.

Such a fun box. Agree, the beach blanket is the best of the box. Next, the sunglasses, pretty unique!

I think the shot glasses and towel are my favorites, and the card is cute, too. I don’t think this would be the right fit for me, but I’ve been trying to explore alternative boxes such as these. I would really like to find one about old school punk rock or something about that genre. I’ve read up on the Sub/Cult ones, too. Definitely going to keep a watch on this one as there were a few items of interest. 🙂

I would really use a lot of caution with the Sub/Cult boxes. I was supposed to review Corporate Goth for MSA so I signed up and they charged me $100/month for four months without ever sending anything. I contacted customer service a few times and would eventually (usually, not always) get responses, days later, often sob stories about why a box hadn’t been sent out. I ended up just telling them to cancel and filed a dispute with my credit card issuer (who gave me the $400 back).

I see now they are offering just a ton of boxes but I’m not convinced they really have their act together yet.

I didn’t think the curator of this box had anything to do with the corporate goth box?
