Keto Krate August 2018 Review

Each box includes an info card. I think it has a really nice, easy-to-read design with real photos of each product. The info sheet also included a recipe for keto chicken tenders breaded using the almonds from this month’s box as a crust. Yum!

We also received some keto-friendly coupons.

Smartcake Lemon Cupcakes,

Smartcake Lemon Cupcakes, one package of 2 cupcakes – Listed Value $3.50 (Buy a box of 8, 2-packs for $24.99)

I have tried these before, and while I don't think it is accurate to call these a cupcake I think they make low-carb breakfast muffins! I love lemon, so I was a little disappointed that this smelled fragrantly of lemon but didn't have a strong lemon taste. These also have a few sugar crystals at the top to add that muffin top texture, which really made a difference for me. My biggest complaint with these is that one muffin is one serving, but they come in a pack of two with no possible way of re-sealing the packaging once opened. It's like a pop tart—they give you two but tell you to only eat one, and it's just not nice! What is nice is that each muffin has 0 grams of net carbs per serving.

Raw Food Central Curt’s Classic Flax Crackers, 3 oz

Raw Food Central Curt’s Classic Flax Crackers, 3 oz – Retail Value $6.99

Wow, these crackers really pack a crunch! Usually, I am not a fan of raw seed and nut crackers, but I actually quite liked these and the satisfying crunch they had (without being too hard). The ingredient list is super simple too—cashews, flax, sea salt, and apple cider vinegar are all that are in these bad boys. A few of these with some salami and a slice of cheese would make a perfect snack in my book. These crackers also pack 10 grams of dietary fiber, which means each serving (1 oz) only has two grams of net carbs.

Front Porch Pecans in Sea Salt, 4 oz – Listed Value $5.75 (Buy a 4-pack of other flavors here for $22.99)

I love pecans and they are usually expensive to buy, so I am always happy to see them in subscription boxes. These sea salt pecans have the perfect amount of salt that really lets the natural flavor of the pecan shine through without being bland, and each serving only has one gram of net carbs. These are good on their own but I am really interested in that pecan crusted chicken tender recipe—I love chicken tenders!

Parmcrisps Original Minis, 0.63 oz

Parmcrisps Original Minis, 0.63 oz – Listed Value $1.08 (Buy a 3 oz container for $9.05 here)

Cheese crisps like these are really popular in keto boxes due to cheese being carb free, but their flavor is just not for me. These are crunchy and this small size is perfect for a pre-portioned snack on the go. Since cheese and salt are the only ingredients, these are carb-free.

Pala Meat Snacks Chorizo Droewors, 2.2 oz

Pala Meat Snacks Chorizo Droewors, 2.2 oz -  Retail Value $6.99

A droewor is an air dried sausage beef stick, and the version we received is chorizo! These had a nice peppery bite that is typical of chorizo, but I just personally am not a fan of meat sticks like these. What I am a fan of is that each serving only has one gram of carbohydrates. I am thinking of dicing my remaining droewor finely and adding it to scrambled eggs for breakfast—has anyone tried that before?

Nekstella Waffle Mix, 4.23 oz – Listed Value $7.95 (Buy a 10.6 oz. package for $7.95)

I am not normally a breakfast person, and then one random Sunday I will wake up wanting waffles and not have any waffle mix or syrup in my pantry. This is going to come in handy on a future Sunday, I can tell you that much. Each waffle only has 4 grams of net carbs per serving and is made primarily with almond flour.

The info sheet also listed the Nekstella Chocolate Hazelnut spread as an additional item to come in the box (and to top our waffles with!), but due to a mixup, the product was not able to be included in the box. Subscribers should have received an email explaining the situation. The chocolate hazelnut spread has no sugar and only 4 grams of net carbs per serving, which would have been a perfect pairing to the waffles to be low carb while still indulging in delicious waffles.

The Verdict: In my last review several readers commented that they did not feel I could accurately review this box since I do not follow a keto diet. They are correct—I do not follow a keto diet, but I am interested in learning more low-carb recipes and finding new snack ideas! I think this box does a great job of doing just that. None of the included items had carbs with a net count higher than 4 grams, and I found all of the snacks to be tasty as well. I had to go by the listed values for most of the items this month, and the total value came to $32.26. That is essentially equal to the cost of the box plus shipping, minus the refund for the missing item.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you’ll receive the September box.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $34.99 + $5 shipping, but subscribers received a discount of $7.98 due to the chocolate hazelnut mishap. That means the cost of the box this month was $32.01 and each of the 6 items in the box has an average cost of $5.34.

Anyone else get moldy cupcakes? Happened to the cookies in the July box as well 🙁

Yes! Not in my original box, but when I wrote to let them know I had some missing items they sent me a box with the missing waffle mix and a few other items. Like moldy cupcakes. Not just a little moldy, either, like horrendous! I think I might be done with this box. Onnit is pricier but looks to have more staples along with the snacks. Anyone tried both? Any preference?

If I remember correctly Hayley is or was on Keto & has also done some reviews on past Keto Krates. It would be nice to see her doing reviews for this box again.

Ugh. My comments are not showing up again so this might be a dupe comment. This is weird because I didn’t receive ANY Nekstella items in my krate. I did get a very vague email about Nekstella offering a bogo deal to make up for the missing spread but there was no offer code, no website and no info on how to redeem the offer. It was so vague that I thought it accounted for my missing waffle mix and spread and I now realize it doesn’t and I got seriously shorted this month. Just wrote to them about it. I would also like to see a Keto-er reviewing these boxes. This can be an expensive woe and there are literally tons of us doing it, many right here and more than able to review how the Keto boxes fit the woe. Many of these products are talked of frequently and/or highly anticipated launches in the Keto community so an involved reviewer would have a good deal of insight that a non-Keto-er just won’t have. One person just can’t do it all! This is not a shot, btw, just a reality check.

Going to have to agree with NYX on getting a someone who follows Keto to review the Keto box. Are you listening Subscription Addiction??

Tiffany does the Green Chef Keto so maybe she would be a good option for reviewing this box if Hailey isn’t available to do so.

Weird. I didn’t receive ANY Nekstella items. Just a vague email about a bogo offer with no code and no info about how or where to redeem the offer. I would also prefer to see a Keto-er review the box. There are a lot of us doing Keto – it shouldn’t be hard to find one to do the reviews! Not a shot, just a reality check.
