FitSnack Box August 2018 Review

This box usually contains some ready-to-eat snacks and sometimes a few pantry items. I really wasn’t sure what was going on with getting two boxes, so I opened them before I took pictures, and you can see that this was their strategy for shipping an extra large item:

This box usually comes with an information card containing details about the items on one side and a workout on the other side. This month there were some coupons, too. I have not tried any Dr. Prager products before, but I know my Whole Foods carries them, so we are going to check that out next weekend. At the very least, there are veggie burgers in the picture on one of the coupons, and that is something both my husband and I are willing to try.

Nothin’ But Quick Fix Bar in Cherry Cranberry Almond (1.4 oz)

Nothin’ But Quick Fix Bar in Cherry Cranberry Almond (1.4 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $20

These are basically granola bars (but made with gluten-free oats). They are some of the better granola bars I’ve had lately in terms of both flavor and texture. Also, they are a totally new product for me. These are kosher (dairy) but not vegan since they contain honey. I think I liked the chocolate one (below) slightly better, but this one was also really good.

Nothin’ But Quick Fix Bar in Chocolate Coconut Almond (1.4 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $20

I am so surprised this didn’t melt on my front porch but it was in good shape when I took pictures. I am a huge fan of chocolate and coconut so it would’ve been pretty hard for this one to disappoint me.

Nutiva Virgin Coconut Oil (0.16 fl oz x 3)

Nutiva Virgin Coconut Oil (0.16 fl oz x 3) – Buy a 14oz Jar for $12.99 (found here for $11.49)

Together, these make about a tablespoon of oil, which probably is enough to cook something in, but I found in this month’s Love with Food that I could just squeeze these little packets out into a smoothie to add a bit of healthful fat, so that’s what I did with these (one per day and a brief respite from the messy measuring of coconut oil from a jar I have to do most mornings).

Wicked Cutz Premium Bacon Jerky in Sriracha (2 oz) – Retail Value $6.29

This is uncured bacon jerky and I think the reason it is included in a box of healthy snacks is that it is free of nitrites and nitrates that are sometimes introduced during curing or preservation. However, I have passed this along to someone at work because I am pretty sure jerky was never meant to be a part of my life (but then, I’ve been a vegetarian for 25 years). If you do eat meat and are looking for an additional protein for, say, bodybuilding purposes, there are lots of pictures of guys with muscles in the “lifestyle” section of the website.

Foods Alive Lemon Chia-Crunch Power Crackers (0.75 oz)

Foods Alive Lemon Chia-Crunch Power Crackers (0.75 oz) – Buy 3 oz for $6.99

These are raw (that’s kind of this brand’s thing) and I have had them before, from Rawbox. They have lots of superfoods like chia and reishi mushrooms, and a surprisingly pleasant texture for a raw snack with a lot of seeds in it. They have a very slight lemon flavor that totally works with the snacks, but means there aren’t very many dips or spreads that would be appropriate – I find these best on their own.

Rx Nut Butter Peanut Butter (1.13 oz) – Buy 10 Packets for $15.99

This product is getting a big push lately; it appeared in Love with Food this month, as well (well, I got the vanilla almond butter then).  This has coconut oil and salt in addition to the ingredients listed on the front. It is tasty, but doesn’t taste like it’s healthy if that makes sense? Because I am used to the peanut butter from the grinder at Whole Foods (i.e., no sugar). I am also not a fan of nut butters in packets because I have a really hard time getting all the product out (although there is no ambiguity about serving size or calories, which is nice). Anyway, it was worth a try but is probably not something I’m going back to regularly.

Authentic Italian Pasta Chips in Mediterranean Sea Salt (1 oz)

Authentic Italian Pasta Chips in Mediterranean Sea Salt (1 oz) – Buy a Variety Pack of 5 oz Bags for $23.94

These are made with semolina flour, which is the same flour used to make pasta, hence the name. They are otherwise basically just crackers. These are pretty starchy and plain, although the sea salt was at a good level for flavor purposes; these didn’t necessarily need a dip or spread (although they would work with one).

Candy Pop Butterfinger Popcorn (1.75 oz) – Buy 2, 5.25 oz Bags for $7.98

I really didn’t see how this could be considered healthful or “fit,” but I think the idea is that it is 140 calories per serving, which is less than an actual Butterfinger bar and includes whole grain. I thought this was delicious and was my favorite discovery of the box, and I could eat bags and bags of this. (My husband couldn’t finish his but I have a much bigger sweet tooth.)

Shrewd Food Protein Crisps in Baked Cheddar (0.74 oz)

Shrewd Food Protein Crisps in Baked Cheddar (0.74 oz) – Buy 8 Bags for $14.99 (found here for $14.24)

This was also a new product. These are called “protein crisps” but they’re basically cheese puffs. I found the flavor to be quite good, but the texture was much too hard for me. (Apparently, low carb people really like them, but my diet is like 60% carbs, so I regularly eat snacks of this nature with a texture I strongly prefer over these.)

Vahdam Assorted Tea Sampler – Retail Value $19.99

This is the reason for the second box and is also the highest value item in the box, by far. We have seen Vahdam teas in FitSnack Box before. I guess your level of excitement over this product depends on how much you like tea. Well, I drink tea all day long and there are a lot of plain (unflavored) teas in this assortment, and those are always the ones I reach for first, and I was happy to see this. It will be a week or two before I have tried all of them, so I tested a few as examples and then below are pictures of the variety of names (you can buy this exact sampler on the Vahdam site).

Here is the Blue Mountain Nilgiri white tea loose and brewed, it had a very light flavor that was just lovely and would even work for an afternoon when you don’t want a super high caffeine content.

This is the Himalayan Breakfast Black Tea. I’d recommend a shorter brewing time for this one, I left the tea leaves in for too long and it got kind of bitter. But there is definitely potential, you just need to actually follow the directions on the bag, which I did not.

Verdict: The August FitSnack Box had 10 items, which makes the average cost per item about $2.79 (figuring a $27.90 cost for the box including free shipping). You will notice from the list of prices above that quite a few of the items had values higher than that, and most especially, the tea sampler alone was about $20, so I figure the box had an exceptional value this month. Many things were new to me (I’ve had the chia crackers, coconut oil, and pasta chips before) and the Butterfinger popcorn was delicious. Plus, I was getting low on tea in my office and now I’m well-supplied.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Boxes ship out around the 20th of the month so you will receive the September box.

Coupon - Use this link to save 30% off your first month and get a $10 bonus snack pack with any 3, 6, or 12-month subscription!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $27.90 + free shipping, which means that each of the 10 items in the box (counting the tea bundle as one and the Nutiva packets as one) has an average cost of $2.79.
