Culture Carton July 2018 “The Upgrade Box” Review

My husband, John, is helping me with this review by testing all of the products and giving me his perspective. I have to keep him away until I snap photos because he always wants to tear open the boxes.

An info card with an introduction to the month’s theme and contents is included. This month’s theme is “The Upgrade Box”. The items will upgrade your look the next time you put on a suit.

La Colombe Pure Black Cold Pressed Coffee, 9oz - Listed Value $3 (buy a pack of 4 for $12)

John and I both loooove coffee, so seeing cold pressed, black coffee in a can was pretty exciting. This company has lots of delicious looking flavors in these draft cans, but I’m glad to be trying the basics. It’s got no added sugar and has the caffeine equivalent to 2.5 cups of coffee. The flavor is bold but smooth and not bitter. Each can is $3, which is a bit pricey, but John and I were able to make a large iced coffee each with one can. Delicious!

Gentlemen Collective Socks

Gentlemen Collective Socks - Retail Value $13.72

John is a huge fan of fun socks. It’s an easy way to give an outfit some personality. These are more sophisticated than many of his socks, think weird dinosaurs and dead writers, but are still his favorite color. They are cotton so they’re breathable and comfortable to wear all day.

Gentlemen of the North Tie Clip in Mahogany - Retail Value $23.07 USD ($29.95 CAD)

I think small details like this mahogany wood tie clip can update an outfit in an instant. And, it’s practical. It’s the perfect width for skinny ties and has an actual clip mechanism, so no sliding around. The simple pine tree detail is understated and classic.

Tie Doctors Cotton Tie

Tie Doctors Cotton Tie - Listed Value $42

So, I can’t find this exact tie but I did find the website for this company and the retail value seems right. Tie Doctors donate part of their proceeds to Doctors Without Borders. This tie is 100% cotton (yay for easy cleaning) but looks shiny and high-end. This pattern could not be more John’s style since he loves skinny ties and royal blue. And, it coordinates with the socks!

Here’s the tie and tie clip together. Pretty handsome looking!

The Dog Stars by Peter Heller -

The Dog Stars by Peter Heller - Retail Value $16 (Found here for $13.30)

This month’s book is a post-apocalyptic novel about a man and his dog. It has received much high-praise for its journal-like depictions of events and action-packed storyline. If you guys didn’t know, John is obsessed with our doggo, Nala, so any book that has a dog in action is good for him.

Book summary on Amazon:

Hig somehow survived the flu pandemic that killed everyone he knows. Now his wife is gone, his friends are dead, and he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, Jasper, and a mercurial, gun-toting misanthrope named Bangley.

But when a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return and follows its static-broken trail, only to find something that is both better and worse than anything he could ever hope for.

The Verdict: Once again, Culture Carton has impressed me and thoroughly delighted John. Each month has been unique and different so that he doesn’t receive repeat items. This month’s emphasis on updated his suit game is great and I like that the items all coordinate so he can just put them together and go. I also like the emphasis on products from small, specialized companies. Plus, he is pleased to receive a book that he hasn’t read and is hurriedly finishing his current read to move on to this one. I’m excited to see what kind of items are included next month!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Sign up now for the September box.

Value Breakdown: The box costs $45.00 + $7.26 shipping to NC and I received $97.79 in value, That means I spent approximately the following on each item:

  • La Colombe Coffee - $1.60
  • Gentlemen Collective Socks - $7.33
  • Gentlemen of the North Tie Clip - $12.33
  • Tie Doctors Tie - $22.45
  • The Dog Stars by Peter Heller - $8.55

I loved this book. The way it depicted the post-apocalyptic world and its challenges really stayed with me. Every person I have recommended it to has hated it, because the style of the writing is pretty difficult.
