clean.fit box August 2018 Review

This box is relatively new to me so I didn’t know what to expect. But I just want to say right now, I went into it with a positive attitude. I have wanted, basically since I first learned about subscription boxes, a box with snacks for vegetarians that was not vegan (I have been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 25 years as of this month and sometimes I just want honey or dairy or something, you know?) and this is the first one I have ever come across:

There was an information booklet with more information on the brands and products in the box.

There was also a workout included this month.

Sprout Living Epic Plant-Based Protein in Vanilla Lucuma, 1.3 oz – Retail Value $3.50

This is actually a plant-based protein. Lucuma is sometimes used as a natural sweetener and it is not my absolute favorite (though I like it more than stevia). Anyway, my standard way of using protein powders is actually just to dump a couple of tablespoons into a smoothie, so that’s what I did here, and this worked well enough with my other flavors.

Story of My Tea Hello! Iced Tea in Sunrise Sunrise – Retail Value $3

This is meant to be brewed as an iced tea. It is fruity, decaf, and herbal. If you would like to see what it looks like brewed, please head on over to last month’s Tea Box Express review, where I received this same item.

Rx Coffee, 4 oz – Buy 12 oz for $19

As you may know, I am not a fan of coffee. My husband seemed to be a fan of this, which he brewed in a French press because I won’t let him put coffee in the coffee machine (long story). You can buy it in whole bean form or various grinds and I do not know what grind we received (i.e., coarse, medium, or fine). Rx Coffee is roasted in small batches and is single origin. My husband was happy that this didn’t have anything weird added (like herbs or extra caffeine), as we sometimes see in fitness boxes.

Sprout Living Equivalent Matcha Drinkable Oats, 1.7 oz – Retail Value $5 (found here for $4)

There is this trend lately for companies to make packaged oatmeal and charge $4-6 per serving and I just don’t understand, because I can buy a box of 8 packets from Whole Foods for that much. Maybe I am not the target audience. Also, I have to admit, I am not so keen on drinking oat flour as a beverage. But, this has a lot of protein and some other superfood ingredients, so I have been putting it in smoothies and that seems to be working well.

Nutilight Protein Hazelnut Spread with Dark Chocolate, 11 oz – Buy 6 jars for $48

I feel a little better about eating this hazelnut spread than I do eating Nutella, because this is sugar-free and has a bit of added fiber and protein, so it is just a healthier option. It is sweetened with erythritol (which I like the flavor of) and stevia (which I am not a fan of, but it is better in foods than in drinks). I’m not sure I’ll ever need to buy hazelnut spread because I seem to get large jars of it in subscription boxes fairly often, but this one has an acceptable flavor and texture and better nutritional value than some of the others.

Pure + Simple Fruit and Vegetable Drink Mix from Projuice, 0.67 oz x 2

I could not find this item online. I think, perhaps, that it either (1) is from overseas, (2) has such a generic name Google just doesn’t work to find it, or (3) both of the above. I do not think I would enjoy mixing this up and drinking it straight but again, it’s a great format for adding to a smoothie, and I do like adding fruit/vegetable powders to smoothies, so this will get used up. Actually, I am glad to get items like this because these powders can be expensive.

Huppybar AZT Wild Mesquite – Retail Value $2.49

I knew I had seen Huppybars before, turns out it was in last month’s FitSnack Box. (These also tend to appear in outdoor-oriented subscription boxes.) They are a pretty basic nut and seed bar but they include mesquite flour, which is something new to me. (Not sure I really noticed the mesquite difference, but it is fun to learn about new local foods.) This also apparently has chiles although they were pretty mild for my taste.

Huppybar Apple Cinnamon Raisin – Retail Value $2.29

Here is another flavor of Huppybar. I’m pretty sure this is the one I’ve had before. Although there are a lot of similar snacks out there, I feel like this one has a little bit of a different texture and flavor going on (probably because it has oats but no dates) that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Verb Energy Co. Simply Cocoa Caffeinated Energy Bite, 0.78 oz x 2 – Retail Value $3

These have 90 calories and about 65 mg of caffeine. I shared them with my husband after dinner and it was not enough caffeine to keep us awake at night. I think the added caffeine (since these are somewhat small) did make this a little bitter. But this was a new product for me and it was vegan. (As an aside to the people at Verb Energy Co., if you ever see this, please stop the scrolling pictures on the product page. If I click on the one with ingredients and nutrition, it’s because I want to read that information, and if it moves on before I’m finished, that’s not cool.)

Verb Energy Co. Salted Peanut Butter Caffeinated Energy Bite, 0.78 oz – Retail Value $1.50

It’s a toss-up as to whether this one or the next one was my favorite, but I love peanut butter. This had the same bitterness as the cocoa ones, though. I get that the sugar has to be limited so that you stay at 90 calories, though. I guess it’s a trade-off.

Verb Energy Co. Maple Blueberry Caffeinated Energy Bite, 0.78 oz – Retail Value $3

I’m leaning towards this one being my favorite. I have had a lot of snacks with various versions of dried blueberry in them, and most of the time it doesn’t work, because dried blueberries aren’t honestly very pleasant. But they work here and I actually enjoyed that aspect of the bar. The maple isn’t quite as strong, but the combination works well together.

Verdict: The July Clean Fit Box had 13 items, which makes the average cost per item about $2.69 (figuring a $34.95 cost for the box). You will notice from the list of prices above that quite a few of the items had values higher than that, so I feel like it averages out and you are generally getting a good deal. I really liked the composition of the box overall; although there were a lot of powdered products, I specifically started drinking morning smoothies to use up powders from subscription boxes and now I look at products like these as free smoothie ingredients! Although some of these items have shown up in other subscription boxes, as indicated above, there were also a lot of new items for me (like the energy bites and the hazelnut spread) and I just love opening a box and knowing I can eat everything in it without reading the ingredients lists first.
