Chococurb Classic Subscription August 2018 Review

Okay, hi, so let's just agree that we're all here because we're on the same page about high-quality chocolate being of great value in our lives. Yes? That's a given, right? It's been a great joy to review the Chococurb box for several months, but this month's box...I mean, it's the height of a positive chocolate experience. I'm so very excited to explore this month's selections with you!

Wild Ophelia Cookies & Cream Chocolate Bar, 2 oz – Buy 4 for $16.00

White Chocolate

Say hello to my new best friend. Usually, white chocolate is something I could take or leave (other than the fact that its chocolate and I'll pretty much never turn it down), but this particular bar is extraordinary in its creaminess, cookie-ness, and, well, to me it tastes better because it's from a women-owned business. When my Chococurb box first arrived and I sampled a small bite of each of the chocolates, this bar surprised me with its great flavor. It does have a true cookies 'n' cream taste to it, and the chocolate cookie dusting on the back of the bar is a really nice touch.

Flash forward to 4 am a few days later and I'm exhaustedly chuckling at what my life has become while nursing my 2-week old baby, and this bar suddenly became more or less the highlight of my life. Yes, I ate the whole thing right then and there. If I could, I'd do it again.

Mayana Chocolate Kitchen Sink Bar, 3.5 oz  — Retail Value $8.00

66% Dark Chocolate

As I mentioned above, Chococurb sends their warmer-weather subscriptions in a little disposable cooler with ice packs. My husband brought the mail in on the day this box arrived, and after unpacking this box from its cooler, he stuck it in the fridge just to play it safe. So, I more or less had to saw this bar in half because its caramel was hardened, and when I tried to bite into it, I nearly broke a tooth. I since left the box out of the fridge (we have AC so I knew my bars wouldn't melt), and when I went tried this bar again, I found that it had softened to perfection, and the heavens opened up and sang.

Just look at this thing! It's got all the good stuff: "peanut butter, pretzel, and crisp rice combine with milk chocolate, fleur de sel caramel and our signature 66% dark chocolate" (from the Mayana Chocolate website). My favorite gas station candy bar is easily a Take 5, and this is a seriously classy, indulgent version of that. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that I obviously owned this bar at the following night's darkest hour nursing session.

Philip Marks 72% Dark Chocolate Roasted Cashew Bark With Turbinado Sugar and Japanese Sea Salt, 3.5 oz  - Retail Value $7.50

72% Dark Chocolate

This choco offering is more traditionally my speed. It's a classic dark chocolate (it's 72% but somehow tastes darker, which I see as a good thing) filled with cashews (the best nut) and sprinkled with generously sized chunks of sea salt. My husband and I agreed that this is the "solid pick" of this month's Chococurb box. Just straightforwardly delicious without being too ridiculously indulgent.

jcoco Boharat Spiced Dark Chocolate, 3 oz - Retail Value $7.50

60% Dark Chocolate

I'm super into spiced dark chocolate—especially in the form of hot chocolate in the winter, but really I love it all year 'round—so I went into this bar (actually it's a trio of small bars!) knowing I'd love it. I'm used to spiced chocolate having cayenne and maybe a little cinnamon in it, but this one has a combo of cumin, black peppercorn, cinnamon, and cloves. The cumin is such an interesting touch! I absolutely love savory dishes with this spice in it and often cook with it, but I can't say I've ever had it in a sweet setting. It's not quite what I was expecting, but it's super good.

This chocolate is from another women-owned business (yass!) and is also non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan, kosher, and uses Rainforest Alliance Certified cacao. I'm here for all of that! Also, how about that packaging? So strikingly beautiful.

Alma Chocolate Whipped Mocha Bar ft. Stumptown Coffee Roasters, 2 oz  - Retail Value $6.00

74% Dark Chocolate

Chococurb is finishing August's box strong with this one. Because the copy on Alma Chocolate's website is so great and I couldn't say it better, I'll leave it to the pros to describe this one:

"A special-edition collaboration featuring Stumptown coffee grounds infused into a sweet and fluffy, pillow-like filling, enrobed in 74% dark chocolate and extremely fine grounds sprinkled on top for an added perk."

Yep, super epic combo, and it tastes just so good. It's very light and utterly delightful.

The VerdictMy Chococurb box seems to be getting better and better. I don't always love the flavors of the more experimental bars, but this selection was spot on. This month's chocolates add up to $33—right on par with the $33.00/month cost ($99.00 for a 3-month subscription), and very worth it to me for the excitement of exploring new flavors with great packaging.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Order by the 10th of September to get the October box!
