closed Bariatric Pal box

Bariatric Pal is an online marketplace for everything a weight-loss surgery patient would need. Of course, almost all of their offerings are great for anyone looking for healthier alternatives, especially if their dietary preference is low-carb and high-protein. They recently started to offer a Box of the Month subscription box!

Bariatric Pal July 2018 Review

This box came with a very detailed info sheet with more information about the products.

The nutrition facts and cooking instructions for the soup were on the back of the info sheet.

They also included this card with ideas on how to use everything in the box to make a full day’s meals.

Shrewd Protein Crisps in Sriracha Cheddar, 2 packs – Retail Value $4.98 ($2.49 each)

These are a spicy cheese puff only with 14 grams of protein per serving! The crunch these pack is really satisfying, and while they don’t taste exactly like my beloved (and horribly unhealthy) Cheeto’s, these definitely can take care of a cheese chip craving while being way better for you.

Herbaland Protein Gummies, 50 g pouch

Herbaland Protein Gummies, 50 g pouch – Retail Value $2.80

Maybe my expectations were too high, but these were a bit of a letdown. I was expecting more of a dessert gummy rather than a protein supplement gummy, so these didn’t have the sweetness I was expecting. I think if I went in with the mindset that these were solely to get more protein (10 grams of protein per pouch), my opinion would have been different.

Epic Meat Bars in Chicken Sesame BBQ, 2 bars – Retail Value $6.38 ($3.19 each)

These protein bars have 15 grams of protein and only 5 grams of carbs, and the sesame BBQ flavor is definitely a unique spin on traditional meat snacks. I don’t typically reach for meat snacks like this, but these are great to keep in my purse to fight mid-day hunger without getting an unhealthy alternative.

BariatricPal Divine 15g Protein & Fiber Bars in Caramel and Sea Salt, 2 bars

BariatricPal Divine 15g Protein & Fiber Bars in Caramel and Sea Salt, 2 bars – Buy a box of 7 for $13.49

These were the first snacks I tried when this box arrived, and the bar was a little melted from the Louisiana heat. Considering this bar has 15 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber, these were surprisingly delicious. They didn’t have an overpowering protein flavor, and the caramel and sea salt gave this a sweetness that my sweet tooth absolutely loved.

BariatricPal Protein Soup Packets in Corn Chowder, 2 packets – Buy a box of 7 for $13.49

Each packet of soup has 15 grams of protein and only 110 calories, and most importantly these actually taste good! These have real chunks of corn and good flavor thanks to the garlic and onion seasoning. Each packet only needs to be mixed with a cup of hot water, so these are easy to make quick and should fit into a variety of busy lifestyles.

BariatricPal Protein Cereal in Honey Nut, 2 packets

BariatricPal Protein Cereal in Honey Nut, 2 packets – Buy a box of 5 for $13.49

I took these to school with me one morning with the intention to buy a yogurt and call it a breakfast, but the small store inside the law center was sadly out of yogurt. I found these wannabe cheerios to have an overwhelming protein powder flavor that I did not enjoy, but I had nothing else to eat and the 15 grams of protein in this cereal did actually help to fill me up.

Zeroodle Organic Soybean Pasta, 200 grams – Retail Value $5.99

I have never gotten into zoodles, so I was wary when I pulled this out of the box. Luckily, this actually a dried pasta made from only two ingredients- soybeans and water! I tried one strand of this when I was cooking something else, and this really does have that al dente bite that you want when you eat spaghetti. I am happy to have this in my pantry for the next time I want pasta while also being healthy—while a serving does have 19 grams of carbs, 8 of those carbs are fiber and 21 grams of protein means that you’ll get full with less, so you are less likely to eat your weight in spaghetti (not that I do that, or anything…).

Walden Farms Calorie Free Pasta Sauce in Tomato Basil, 12 oz

Walden Farms Calorie Free Pasta Sauce in Tomato Basil, 12 oz – Retail Value $5.49

Calorie free… carb free… pasta sauce? I was distrustful of this immediately. I don’t know what kind of chemical sorcery happens with this pasta sauce, but it actually wasn’t awful. This didn’t have the rich and hearty consistency that a good tomato sauce does as it is a bit more watery, but it does have not awful flavor thanks to the garlic and basil. I will probably make this my own with more minced garlic, diced onions, and fresh herbs, add in some good parmesan cheese, and have a flavorful sauce to top my soybean pasta and have a meal with way fewer calories and carbs than a typical bowl of pasta.

BariatricPal Multi-Vitamins - Retail Value $6.99

I don't currently take a multi-vitamin, so I was really happy to see this in the box! Multi-vitamins are important in bariatric patients, but they are also important with your regular average Joe. One vitamin contains a daily dose of 15 essential vitamins like B12, A, D, and E, and the size was small enough that I could swallow it with ease. Vitamins can be pricey so I am happy that I have this!

The Verdict: I am not a bariatric patient, but I am trying to focus more on eating high protein, low carb items. I think this box is great for anyone who is trying to get more protein in their diet, and it is fun to try the wide variety of products that Bariatric Pal includes each month. This is also a pretty good value—the box costs $39.95 and it promises to have a value of at least $50. By subscribing you don’t have to take a risk and buy in bulk and end up not liking something for a relatively low price-per-item. I couldn’t find a value of three of the items, but the items I did find added up to $32.63. I think the value of the remaining items easily makes the total value more than the cost of the box, and its probably close to the $50 promised as well.

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? No, but I think you can get the August box! Boxes ship around the 24th of each month.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $39.95 + free shipping, which means that each of the 18 individual items in the box has an average cost of $2.22.

I am a bariatric patient (VSG 2014, 120 lb lost), a Registered Nurse, and I tried this box when it first launched. I found this sub to be outstanding for bariatric patients! I feel it’s especially useful for those within the 6 – 12 month post-operative phase who haven’t intense support from a clinical or other formal post-op group, as it exposes bari patients to a wider variety of foodstuffs, supplements, and even gadgets than one might realize are available. It’s also a good box for those who are pre-op; they can obtain a greater knowledge of the nutritional and lifestyle changes that they will experience after surgery. I found the value quite good, too, as these foods and supplements and typically on the more expensive side.

Thanks for your input Carrie. I’m 6 months post-op (VSG as well) with no formal support group. I’ve ordered products directly from their website (like the corn chowder), but the subscription seems like a good option to try new things.

That pasta sauce sounds suspect for sure. Sugars naturally occur in the tomatoes and purple sweet potatoes listed as ingredients. And zero calories??? Psssshhhhh.
