SlutBox by Amber Rose July 2018 Review

cover of zine "Let Freedom Ring"

The first thing SlutBox comes with is a large glossy "zine". Two month's in and I think it's the most important part of the box and always learn things I deem to be really important about being respectful and inclusive to everyone!

The first two pages are photos from social media with the hashtag #slutbox, and the table of contents.

The next two pages want you to share the SlutBox social media handles with your "sluts" and has a letter from Amber Rose herself.

The next three spreads detail each item included, the retail price, and "Hoe Tips" on how to use them. Don't forget about SlutWalk in October!

There are two 2-page spreads talking about Head Count, which is an organization that uses music (through bands, shows, and festivals) as a way to get people to register to vote.

This month's timeline is "Voting Rights HERstory" which goes through the timeline of getting women, Black Americans, immigrants, and other people of color the right to vote because it didn't happen for everyone all at once.

Then, my beloved Whoreoscopes.

Want to get more involved in politics but don't know where to start? The next two spreads give you 25 ways.

Self-care is essential before you can help others, so they give you some tips on small ways to make sure you are taking care of number one so you can take on important issues.

Finally, the last two pages have the Slut of the Month, and "Let's Get Political Bingo".

Voter Registration paperwork with info card Voter Registration paperwork with other side of info card

Another really important thing included in this month's box is a voter registration form. They've even included an envelope to mail it in and a web address to find where to send it. They also urge you to use the card on social media with the hashtag #thisslutvotes to get others to follow your lead.

Now- are you ready to get into the items? Let's go!

Skin Chemists Rose Quartz Lip Plump Skin Chemists Rose Quartz Lip Plump open

Skin Chemists Rose Quartz Lip Plump, 0.27 fl oz. - Retail Value $32.47 USD (£24.90)

This lip plump is a really cool shimmery pink in the tube but goes on clear. You can smell the peppermint oil as soon as you crack it open which is part of what gives your lips the tingly plumping action. It also contains something called "volulip" which is naturally derived from Portulaca Pilosa which is said to stimulate the production of Hyaluronic Acid. There's also vitamin E oil in there to protect your lips. It is a gloss, so it makes my lips shiny and seems to keep them nice and hydrated with minimal stickiness. I probably won't wear this daily but it's certainly a good alternative to injections to get a fuller lip.

Feminist Sticker Club Equality 4 All Sticker

Feminist Sticker Club Equality 4 All Sticker - Retail Value $3.00

Next, there' a vinyl sticker from Feminist Sticker Club that features hands with various skin tones getting the message "Equality 4 All" across. I hope we're getting closer than further away in this, and at the very least you can stick this up to show your support for people of all shades.

Appeal Cosmetics Luxurious Lipstick in Spank Me open Appeal Cosmetics Luxurious Lipstick in Spank Me bottom of Appeal Cosmetics Luxurious Lipstick in Spank Me

Appeal Cosmetics Luxurious Lipstick in Spank Me - Retail Value $29.01

Another beauty item for your lips is this lipstick from Appeal Cosmetics. I'm not familiar with this brand and a quick search only shows it being sold on their own website and Amazon. Sometimes I can get a little suspicious of brands that aren't sold at prominent beauty stores (or at least other sites online) having such a hefty retail value (though it does look like this was sold at Walmart in the past). The bright pink color I received (Spank Me) color is really nice and right up my alley for summer. It glides on really smoothly and feels creamy on my lips, but transfers immediately to skin or a cup. It also doesn't appear to be a particularly thick formula so I suspect I'll need to reapply often throughout the day. Great color, but not sold on this formula.

Unicron Snot Silver Holographic Glitter Gel open Unicorn Snot Silver Holographic Glitter Gel

Unicorn Snot Silver Holographic Glitter Gel, 1.7 oz. - Retail Value $12.99

I've heard of Unicorn Snot before but have never had the pleasure of seeing it first-hand. I'm pleased with the silver color I received (looks like there were a variety of colors available) and the smell reminds me of my childhood makeup adventures for some reason. I'm sure something like this existed in the 80s, so it probably smells like something I begged my mom to buy me back then. While I'm more on the conservative side of makeup and don't go for glitter or anything too wild, this is a really fun product to get in the box. It's safe to put on your face and skin and is also suggested for use in your hair, which I wouldn't have thought of. I can see this being a great product to help stand out at a festival or parade this summer.

Art Naturals Rose Hydrosol Uses and directions for Art Naturals Rose Hydrosol ingredients for Art Naturals Rose Hydrosol

Art Naturals Rose Hydrosol, 8 oz. - Retail Value $13.00

Wow- this is a HUGE bottle of floral water! I am currently using a lavender toner spray after cleansing, but it's getting near the end so this will come in handy. I wasn't familiar with what hydrosol is, but the booklet explained it as condensation left over from the steam created when plants are distilled during the process of making essential oils". So, while hydrosol is as concentrated as essential oils, it's gentler and contains some of the same benefits. Interesting! In addition to using as a toner, this can be used to set makeup, soothe sunburn, or simply refreshing your skin on a hot day! Its light rose scent is really nice!

Coloured Raine Eyeshadow in Goalz back of Coloured Raine Eyeshadow in Goalz Coloured Raine Eyeshadow in Goalz out of package

Coloured Raine Eyeshadow in Goalz - Estimated Retail Value $6.99 (linked to similar)

I'm in an eyeshadow phase at the moment, so this was a cool entry. This super shimmery bronze shadow is an exclusive hue just for SlutBox and I can see it being complementary to almost any skin tone. The full-size pan comes alone in a package but can be popped into a magnetic palette to build your own collection. Mine came with a little chunk out of it which made a slight mess of the packaging, but I'm not too bothered by it as there's still way more than I'll get through anytime soon.

Hollywood Fashion Secrets No-Show Concealers - Retail Value $10.00

SlutBox included some nipple covers in their first box back in May but these aren't as flashy and are made to stay behind the scenes instead of being center stage. If you're going braless but don't want your nips to be the center of attention, you can use these to quiet them down and keep things look smooth. There are 10 total petals (or 5 pairs) in the package and they're hypoallergenic so they should be safe to stick on delicate skin.

Nelson J Beverly Hills Argan Oil 7 Moisture Healing Hair Mask

Nelson J Beverly Hills Moisture Healing Hair Mask in Coconut, 1 oz. - Listed Retail Value $9.00 (Buy a 3.4 oz for $23.00)

I've dyed my hair since my teens, so it's never really in great shape. This year I've made it a point to get back to my natural dishwater blonde color and blow dry it less in hopes to get in a healthier state. This small tube of moisture healing mask should be of great assistance. Made with Argan oil, it controls frizz, seals split ends (my biggest problem) and restores silkiness and shine to name a few. I'll most likely be using this mask soon and can tell I'll get at least a good 5 uses out of it with my hair type.

Mixed Chicks Morning-After Redefining Foam Mixed Chicks Morning-After Redefining Foam with cap off

Mixed Chicks Morning-After Redefining Foam, 3.4 oz. - Retail Value $5.00

I love the idea of this foam that you can use to revive curls when you can't wash your hair but need to look fresh. Unfortunately, my thin straight hair won't do well with this product, but I know a bunch of curly-haired ladies that would probably get better use of it!

Candy Prints I'm Horny Cherry Lollipop close up of Candy Prints I'm Horny Cherry Lollipop

Candy Prints I'm Horny Cherry Lollipop - Retail Value $2.95

This is really the only thing "racy" in the box this month, in my opinion. Even though I enjoy SlutBox, I'd expect more content like this cherry lollipop that states "I'm Horny!" on the bright red background in white. I don't have a huge sweet tooth, so I'll probably pass this on or save it to give *subtle* hints to someone when I'm in the mood.

JJ Young by Coalion Lab Mud Sheet Mask back of JJ Young by Coalion Lab Mud Sheet Mask

JJ Young by Coalion Lab Mud Sheet Mask - Retail Value $4.99

The last item this month is a combination of two kinds of my favorite beauty products: sheet and mud masks! I'm versed in both and while I tend to like mud masks a bit more, I haven't seen it done like a sheet mask before. The rosehip variation I got is supposed to "lift and hydrate", so I'm really excited to try this one!

Swatches on arm

Here are the swatches (top to bottom) for the Rose Quartz Lip Plump, Appeal Cosmetics Lipstick, Unicorn Snot, and Coloured Raine eyeshadow. Since the Unicorn Snot is a gel, you can always build it and add a heavier amount to get more glitter.

Verdict: Just its third delivery in, SlutBox seems to be revealing that it's mainly a beauty box for those who have open minds, an adventurous makeup thirst, and aren't shy about their sexuality. I have to say that this month has been the tamest thus far and the lollipop is the only item that would be deemed a little risqué by most. The booklet once again stole the show for me, and I think it's awesome that they are motivating people to vote, but I was disappointed in the lack of more sex-positive items that I assumed this box would always include. I love that this box exists, and I think it has a great value (11 items with a $129.40 retail value), but I'm still looking for their items to stand out a bit more than other boxes.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, it looks like you'll get August as your first shipment.

Such an odd box.

How does any of this empower woman? This is a makeup box.

Doesn’t look worth the money, am doing the political agenda is quite a turn off.

Kat

Encouraging someone to vote (and ultimately be an active participant in issues that directly affect them) is a turn-off?

Great review Marne and I completely agree with your “Verdict”…it’s a really nice beauty box – I enjoy that the items are generally a bit more interesting than your average sub, and I really like the messages in the booklets. However, with that said, I canceled my subscription as it just wasn’t what I was expecting. I was sad to do so as I love the concept!

Just an FYI for others who are canceling – you have to cancel by the 10th or you’ll receive the next month’s box. Since I cancelled on July 15th, I’ll be receiving August’s box.

I cancelled a few days ago and they offered me the choice of stopping after August or getting a refund for the upcoming month. Customer service has been great, so you may be able to skip next month. 🙂

Hi Alissa! Maybe the customer service agent you get matters…I canceled on 7/15, and I received an email back saying that I am getting the August box as I hadn’t canceled by July 10th. Not only that, but they said that I need to respond back or I’d get the September box. They were really sweet in the email, but if I request to cancel a box, I would like for customer service to just cancel as soon as they can, without needing to hear back from me a second time. It was off-putting, which was unfortunate as I really like the concept of the box, and might have considered resubscribing again in the future.

Redhed36

I think this box is an improvement from previous boxes, but I agree it’s misleading because it is more of a beauty box. I still think apparel and accessories that push woman’s rights would be better fit for this box. A bracelet hat says #MeToo would be nice. There are so may ideas.

DawnS

This box just is not worth the mail shock of the actual box reading #slutbox. I got the first one and was glad I cancelled as the remainder have just been filler.

Anna

I was disappointed that they didn’t include anything remotely slutty in this box. Something for the 🌮 would’ve been nice.

^^^^^^^^

That! If I’m walking around with a neon pink box proclaiming slut I want it to earn its name! Instead I’m sucking a “I’m horny” lollipop and reapplying lipstick? Hmmmph.

Reply ButtonReply

Anna

Maybe we’re missing the point here. Are we supposed to spray ourselves down with the rose spray and put on the lipstick while making BJ faces is that what makes it slutty.

erinsmith872

I would totally subscribe to this box if it had exterior packaging but without it, I will have to pass. I think the company could appeal to more people if they offered this. It has nothing to do with being a prude but out of respect of not wanting to embarrass and sicken my teenage sons. I mean, seriously, what kid’s stomach isn’t going to turn when they see something addressed to their mother called “slutbox”?
