My Fashion Crate July 2018 Review

I like that they included this insert which gives descriptions of the items and lists their value. The front side is everything you will receive in the Essentials box while the back also shows what you get in the Premium box.

Sleeveless Smock Printed Romper, Size M- Retail Value $46

Listed on the card is a sleeveless top by Re:named, but instead, I received this romper. When we reached out to them, they said that there was an inventory issue and this is what was sent to subscribers. It wasn't clear if it was all subscribers or just some, but they said there would be an explanation card in boxes that received this item to let everyone know. Unfortunately, I didn't receive the card explaining this.

Another thing to note this month is that I was sent clothing in size medium again, even though my preference is for larges. This is the second month that they have run out of size large clothing items and while I am okay with sizing down, I know a lot of subscribers might not be. I'd like to chalk this up to mine being a blogger box and hope that they reserved the larges for their other subscribers.

I actually like the romper better than the top that was supposed to come in the box and both are valued around the same ($45 for the sleeveless top versus $46 for the romper), so I'm not too upset about receiving this. It is a little worrisome that they are having inventory issues and running out of sizes two months in a row. This box is relatively new, so I understand needing some time to work out the kinks and I can be patient, but I'm not sure all subscribers will feel this way!

I love the pattern and colors of this romper and the criss-cross pattern on the back is a nice detail. It has a little snap at the bust, so it is easy to pull on and off. I'm not sure how I feel about the tassels, but since the colors are somewhat subdued, they don't stand out to me as much and I think I could live with them. Since this was a size medium and was not getting past my hips, my only hope is that rompers are still in style next summer so that I can wear it then!

Deco Miami Petite Palm Nail Lacquer - Retail Value $8

I love this nail polish! From the design to the beautiful color to the vegan formula, it's perfect! I had my sister test this one out too, and she loved it as much as I did. She modeled it for me and is wearing two coats in the picture, but I was able to get decent coverage with just one coat since it is so opaque. It went on smoothly and with just one coat and using my hands a lot, I only noticed minimal chipping. I also love the small size (5.75 ml) of the bottle; I don't think I've ever finished an entire bottle of polish before since I like to change my colors frequently so this is great for me!

31Bits Sand Bar Bracelet- Retail Value $22 (found on sale for $16.80)

I like this bracelet a lot. It feels very summery to me with the with the coral paper beads and gold bar. It's also a little more casual so I think it makes a good everyday bracelet. I love that this is handmade by artisans in Uganda and any purchase helps to support them in their work (read more here).

They also included a gift card for $15 off any amount on their website. You do have to pay shipping (it was $6 for me), but they had several items on sale for under and around $15. I couldn't help but support a good cause, so I've already spent my gift card. So much cute stuff!

Seoul Mamas Revitalizing Sheet Mask - Retail Value $8

I am always happy to see a sheet mask in a box. Especially one that is paraben and sulfate free. The package was full of serum and I probably could have gotten two uses out of it! The mask itself gave my skin a refreshed feeling as I wore it and left my face feeling soft and moisturized afterwards. I always feel so much better after a good sheet mask!

Positive Elements Tan Joy Pouch - Retail Value $54

This leather pouch is ethically made by Positive Elements, another company with a great mission statement. The pouch is pretty small and the loop fits over your wrist for easy carrying. I can definitely fit the essentials inside- lipstick, money, and keys, but not my iPhone 7 Plus nor my husband’s 7. I love the striped interior and the smell of the leather makes it feel so luxurious. The tan is a great neutral color, too.

They also included a gift card for $50 off any purchase over $100 (free shipping and returns in the US!), but unfortunately, when I tried to use it, it only took off $25 instead. I emailed customer service and they got back to me within 20 minutes to let me know they were looking into it. Another 20 minutes and the issue was resolved! Great customer service!

Remake Pin and Wallet Guide - Listed Value $10

Remake is a nonprofit group that is concerned with ethical and sustainable fashion. This little wallet guide has a lot of facts about "fast fashion" and irresponsible brands, a lot of stuff I didn't know. Learn more about their cause here.

The following items are only in the Premium Box:

Ruffle Tie-Front Cardigan, Size M- Listed Value $58

This cardigan is a bit tight on my chest since this was a medium, but I am 3 months post-partum and currently nursing, so not much fits across my bust at the moment. I like the peachy color of this top even though it's not something I would necessarily choose. The ruffles are cute and flirty and this wrap top is great to dress up your look. I had trouble finding something in my closet to work with this and ended up settling on a plain white cami, but a dressier undershirt would probably be preferred!

Laritzy Liquid Lip Stain in Pebble - Retail Value $20

I was unsure about this color when I took it out of the box, but it is actually super flattering. They say it's a universal color, and it seems like it really might be. This went on so smooth and had a mostly matte finish with just a little bit of shine to it.

Just a little swipe gave me a good tint of color, but you can easily layer it to get a darker stain. It is pretty long lasting and I didn't notice any transfer when I wore it. Definitely a great product!

Here is the pouch with the lip stain to give you an idea of scale!

Verdict: This was a really great selection of items this month. I especially loved that they seem to be selecting brands with missions towards ethical fashion. The jewelry was a little bit more my style this month and I am loving my lip stain and nail lacquer! The sheet mask allowed me to feel pampered for just a moment and I was able to use one of the gift cards without spending too much out of pocket. I really appreciate that every month we receive two clothing items and some sort of bag, but I am definitely hoping that they are able to send me the right size next month so I can actually wear them.

The total for the Premium box comes to $226, not counting the gift cards, which I think is a great value for a $54.90 ($49.95 + $4.95 shipping) box. As for the Essentials box, the value is $148 (the gift cards) which is still a great value for a $39.95 ($35 + $4.95 shipping) box. When comparing the two subscriptions, for $14.95 extra for the Premium box we received the cardigan and lip stain valued at $78.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, this box is currently sold out, so you will receive the August box. From My Fashion Crate:

All packages ship on the 2nd week of the month. Your package takes 3~5 days to arrive after the notification email. Shipping takes a few days longer for Canada and International orders.

What a honest, thoughtful, and balanced review! Thanks! Also, this box is intriguing. Do they usually include ethically sourced items?

Thanks, Shana! 🙂 That’s a great question! They have used ethical brands and those with great mission statements in previous boxes, but I’m not sure if they exclusively include ethically sourced materials. This box seemed to highlight them a lot more, so maybe they are shifting towards including more ethically sourced brands in future boxes, which would be great!

Omg your review just reminded me of a GC from PS for 31 bits. They have cute items and l like that they source ethically.

I’d be disappointed at receiving clothes that were sized down for me without a heads up or it being because it runs big. You seem to make even the bad boxes seem good.

Haha well hopefully the review still felt honest! I think subscribers would be given a heads up about size changes- they did let me know ahead of time the first time it happened. Others have commented that they were also offered another item from the shop if they didn’t want to size down. If anyone has concerns though, I’d definitely recommend contacting customer service before committing! 🙂

Anna

It definitely felt honest.

Looking back at all three of the reviews, I think I would prefer the lower cost essentials box. They jewelry all seems to be of high quality. As for the gift cards, if you don’t mind spending a little on shipping or in this month’s box, 50 extra dollars (which makes your purchase half off), then you can purchase what you truly would like at a deep discount.

As for the clothes, from looking at all three months, the style seems geared toward younger women. But I do like the jewelry, pouch and the other items included. So why not try the less expensive option?

Over time, perhaps there will be more customization available with the clothing and women of all ages or women who prefer a different style, will want the clothing in these last three boxes.

I liked your very honest and thorough reviews, Brandi. Also the cardigan looks very cute on you!

Thanks, Leslie! 🙂 I completely agree- the clothes seem geared towards younger women. Hopefully they will be able to expand a bit more in the future!
