Love With Food Deluxe Box July 2018 "Play" Review

Usually, the theme from the information card doesn’t have much to do with the box. This month, there was just the word “Play.” (It is usually just one word.)

The box came with this information card. I miss the old information cards that said more about the snacks.

There was an insert letting subscribers know that Love with Food has recently been purchased by Snacknation. (They also sent an email about this a week or so ago.) It sounds like that might lead to more snack variety in the future (yay) but I haven’t seen any changes yet.

Don’t Go Nuts Blueberry Blast Chewy Granola Bar with Blueberries (1.26 oz) – Buy 12 bars for $21.48

There’s always a little kid food in Love with Food and this month, it is these granola bars. These are gluten free and nut free as well as being dairy free (but not vegan as they do contain honey). These are worth a try if you have allergies or your kid goes to a peanut-free school, but they’re quite small and I find the color that results from the blueberries kind of unappealing in this instance. The flavor is generically fruity but not as tart as something with, say, raspberries. As a personal preference, I’d be more likely to buy granola bars that included gluten and nuts.

Love Corn in Habanero Chili (0.7 oz)

Love Corn in Habanero Chili (0.7 oz) – Buy 10, 1.6 oz bags for $25.87 (found here for $21.89)

I’ve had some other roasted corn snacks in the past and these, while tasty, suffer from the same issue – that is, they are awfully hard. I’m not sure “crunchy” is the way I’d describe it but more along the lines of “be careful if you have dental work.” Still, this is a new item that I have not received in a food subscription box before, and that definitely counts for something.

Madegood Vanilla Crispy Square (0.78 oz) – Buy 36 bars for $18.05

I am pretty sure I’ve received this exact item from Love with Food before. (For what it’s worth, it’s a little difficult to tell, but I *think* the product I linked to is 6 boxes of 6 bars each.) They are vegan and that makes me happy in that I can actually eat them. They have some dehydrated vegetables in them but, for perspective, they’re listed in the ingredients AFTER sea salt, which means there’s not much, assuming the ingredients list is correctly ordered by decreasing product weight. If you don’t eat gelatin and are too lazy to make your own Rice Krispie treats with Dandies (vegan marshmallows), though, this is a decent substitute.

Mini Pops in Truffle (0.7 oz) – Buy 6 bags for $6.99

Oh, mini pops. They are a favorite of the folks at Vegan Cuts and I have received this in other flavors several times before (from other boxes). It is popped sorghum, a grain not commonly used as human food in this country (but becoming trendier now, I think). I find the flavor to be pretty good (I do not generally enjoy non-yeast-fungus-based foods, EXCEPT popcorn with truffle oil, so this item works for me at a flavor level). I just think the pieces are too small to conveniently eat unless you have a spoon handy.

Salty Road Taffy (1 piece) – Buy a 3.5 oz box for $10

I don’t know what flavor this was because, although you kind of can’t see it in the photo, it melted to where part of it was outside the wrapper, so I elected not to eat it, since I don’t know how clean people’s hands are when they pack this box. (For what it’s worth, the mail carrier handed this box directly to me – it did not sit in the mailbox for any time at all.) They sent some of these in a past box and they were pretty good, then, though.

Ruger Chocolate Wafers (2.125 oz)

Ruger Chocolate Wafers (2.125 oz) – Buy 24 packages for $24.83

You will get a lot of wafer cookies in Love with Food. A lot. This item is out of stock most everywhere I looked, though I did find one online store with a price, which is the one I linked to. I’d be wary of ordering this during hot weather. But, the filling in mine didn’t melt and as you can see from the second photo, this comes in smaller pieces and is easy to share. If you like wafer cookies, you will enjoy this.

Brownie Brittle in Salted Caramel (1 oz)

Brownie Brittle in Salted Caramel (1 oz) – Buy 5 oz for $4.15

Although I have never purchased this product, I’ve easily eaten 20 bags of it, thanks to subscription boxes. I don’t understand the motivation behind the creation of this snack since everyone knows the undercooked middle of the brownie is the best part and the crusty edges are to be avoided. I do appreciate that the chocolate we get in July is basically not meltable (or not very much so), as that is a problem I’ve had with some Love with Food items in the past.

Popped Chickpeatos in Caramel Sea Salt (0.8 oz) – Buy 8, 4 oz bags for $28

These are kind of like Snapea Crisps, but made from green pea and chickpea flour. These have a satisfying texture but I think, after trying these, that it is my own personal preference for snacks of this type to be savory rather than sweet. I would like to see the Ranch flavor in a box at some point as that one sounds pretty good to me.

Route 11 Potato Chips in Lightly Salted (1 oz x 2)

Route 11 Potato Chips in Lightly Salted (1 oz x 2) – Buy 14 bags for $25.99 (found here for $21.99)

We have received this brand from Love with Food in the past, but usually in dill pickle flavor. These are kettle chips and they do have a nice texture and an appropriate level of salt and my husband enjoys these way more than the dill pickle ones because he is not a fan of dill. I am just a potato chip fan in general so I am happy with these.

Janis and Melanie Oatmeal Cranberry Cookie (1 oz) – Buy 8 cookies for $5.80

Janis and Melanie is a brand that pops up often with this subscription but they do change up the products every now and then and these full-sized cookies are new to me. (I have liked every Janis and Melanie item Love with Food has sent.) These are super soft, which is my preference for packaged cookies. I am thinking about ordering a whole bunch of stuff from the Janis and Melanie website, actually. (This flavor is sold out so I took the value from another flavor in a similar package.)

Blue Diamond Mini Nut Thins in Cheddar Cheese (0.71 oz x 2)

Blue Diamond Mini Nut Thins in Cheddar Cheese (0.71 oz x 2) – Buy a 6-pack for $4.99

This is an item that’s undergoing some packaging and branding changes lately, as it’s a product line we buy from every couple of weeks and I’ve been watching the supermarket shelves. My husband eats Blue Diamond nut thins at lunchtime on occasion and he was wondering about some of the new flavors we’ve seen, so we were both happy to see these, as now we know that this is definitely a flavor to add to the rotation. These are cheesy and actually, have a lovely texture for non-wheat crackers.

Dolcetto Lemon Wafer Bites (0.7 oz) – Buy 30 bags for $30 (found here for $22.99)

This brand shows up all the time in Love with Food. We have had wafer bites in other flavors before, but these lemon ones were new to us. They are crispy (but not hard) on the outside and have a cream filling. The lemon flavor was super strong. These smash easily but were mostly intact in the package.

Dolcetto Wafer Rolls in Chocolate (0.53 oz)

Dolcetto Wafer Rolls in Chocolate (0.53 oz) – Buy 7 packs for $14.99 (found here for $11.99)

These are a little bit different from the wafer bites (hey, they are longer and the ends aren’t pinched shut, plus the flavor is chocolate instead of lemon) but if you like one of these snacks, you are probably going to like the other. I feel like I have seen these from Love with Food before, but I can’t be 100% certain (I’ve been subscribing for a looooong time).

Verdict: There were 15 items in the July 2018 Love with Food Deluxe Box, counting doubles separately. I can’t pinpoint anything I really didn’t like (though there were texture or size issues with one or two items), but I feel like a lot of the items were either identical to past box items (e.g., brownie brittle) or very similar (Dolcetto anything, wafer cookies, etc.) and that keeps me from being super enthusiastic overall. I am happy the box was vegetarian this month, as that is not always the case.

Was so happy to get my Deluxe box. I didn’t get the brownie brittle ( big bummer) instead I got apple sauce ( bummer again). The remainder of the box was wonderful, loved it…
