Keto Krate July 2018 Review

Each box includes an info card. I think it has a really nice, easy-to-read design with real photos of each product. The info sheet also included a recipe for cheesecake using the birthday cake cookies from this month’s box as a crust. Yum!

Nui Birthday Cake Cookie, 56g - Listed Value $3.99 (buy a pack of 8 for $24.95)

I had a friend come over while I was going through this box and she immediately grabbed this cookie and tore into it. Considering it only has one gram of sugar, 3.6 grams of carbs, and it's gluten-free I was expecting her to say it tasted like cardboard rather than a tasty cookie. Imagine my surprise when she said, "wow, this is awesome!" The flavor was described as being very coconut forward and you can definitely tell that it was made with almond flour, but it was gone within a few bites. Now I have serious regrets for sharing and not eating it for myself!

Dulce De Leche Krunchy Melts,

Dulce De Leche Krunchy Melts, 2 oz. - Retail Value $7.99

These, on the other hand, I did not share. These were the first thing I tried when I opened the box, and wow was I impressed—they taste so good! I have spent $25 on a single fancy unicorn-decorated French meringue swirl before, and these definitely are close in texture! I find that marvelous considering how delicate meringues can be to make. Plus, a serving size is ten meringues! That was more than enough to satisfy my sweet tooth, and I still can't believe that one serving is only 30 calories with zero grams of net carbs! That same night I ordered two more of these containers off amazon for me and sent a cappuccino flavored box to my mom to try. These are big winners.

Three Jerks Filet Mignon Beef Jerky,

Three Jerks Filet Mignon Beef Jerky, 2 oz. - Retail Value $11.99

I like filet mignon and I like jerky, so I expected to like these. I didn’t hate it, but it wasn’t my favorite. The jerky is seasoned to taste like a hamburger with mustard, ketchup, and pickle flavoring and ultimately the combination wasn’t for me. I also thought it was interesting that such a lean cut of beef was used in this jerky when the ketogenic diet promotes high fat. This jerky definitely could have benefited from being from a more marbled cut that would have added more flavor while it cooked.

Fat Fit Go Knead & Squeeze Energy Blend, 1.15 oz. - Listed Value $3 (buy a pack of 10 for $26.99)

I’ll be honest—I did not want to put this in my mouth. I am not really someone who is so busy that they need to eat out of pouches, and the nutritional facts on this don’t really align with my dietary needs—24 grams of fat, 3 grams of protein, and 246 (!!) calories. I gave it a try, and it immediately reminded me of peanut butter thanks to the almonds and macadamia nuts in it. What really made this not work for me is that it is “tropical margarita” flavored so there was lime essential oil in the ingredients as well, and lime flavored peanut butter isn’t my thing.

Ketowatt Peanut Butter Bar

Ketowatt Peanut Butter Bar, 1.65 oz. - Listed Value $3 (buy a box of 12 for $29.99)

I am not a big protein bar person but I am always willing to try new ones in case I find a flavor I actually enjoy. Peanut Butter is one of my least favorite flavors of protein bars but this wasn't awful—it had a decent texture and there was only a slight protein aftertaste. I will say that the claim "they taste like candy bars" made by Keto Krate is a boldfaced lie to my taste buds, but I have had worse.

Paleo Ranch Garlic Jalapeno Kippered Beef, 0.75 oz. - Retail Value $2.49

I became very excited when I saw the words "paleo ranch" because I love ranch! Unfortunately, this was referring to a different kind of ranch so I was a bit let down. I am not exactly sure what kippered beef is, and I am not a fan of meat sticks in general. I was happy with the all-natural ingredient list (literally every ingredient is something I already have in my pantry or spice cabinet), so I gave a tiny nibble a try. I was actually happy with the texture (it reminded me of regular jerky in non-stick form), but the jalapeno flavor definitely takes a back seat to the garlic. Overall, not bad!

I Love Snacking Air Cheese,

I Love Snacking Air Cheese, 0.63 oz. - Listed Value $1.99

I really love cheese but I just cannot get behind dried cheese snacks. There is always a weird aftertaste that almost reminds me of burned cheese, and these were no exception. I do appreciate that cheese is the only ingredient, but I will stick with my melted cheese instead of these guys.

Ultima Replenisher, 2 packets – Listed Value $0.90 each (buy a box of 20 for $19.99, found here for $17.99)

I love drinking regular cold water, and I don't work out enough to need electrolyte drinks. That being said this is an awesome alternative to grabbing a bottle of Gatorade where the carbs in one bottle are outrageous—these have no sugar and no calories. I tried out the raspberry one and it tasted similar to adding in sugar-free crystal light, which isn't a taste I enjoy.

Synchro KetoManna

Synchro KetoManna, 1.2 oz. - Listed Value $2.45 (buy a box of 10 for $24.97)

Oh great, another squeeze pouch. I didn’t give this a try because it was described as a “ketogenic chocolate fudge” and I really do not enjoy chocolate fudge. I am the person who doesn’t like it if a scoop of ice cream is drizzled with chocolate sauce, so I knew I wouldn’t be able to give this product a fair chance. I have a friend who drinks a chocolate protein shake every day at work, and I am going to pass this along to her. I do appreciate the simple ingredient list, as this is made with only seven items!

Nick’s Sticks Original,

Nick’s Sticks Original - Retail Value $3.25

I liked that these were carb free with a simple ingredient list, but I still can’t get over my aversion to beef in stick form. I passed these along to a friend who said she could really taste the quality of the beef used and that these had a good texture without being mushy like some other brands can be.

Bonus Nutivia Coconut Oil Sample - Buy a full-size jar for $8.99 (found here for $6.29)

I haven’t tried this coconut oil yet, though I keep meaning to! I know it’s a way healthier oil to cook with than butter, plus this alleges to have a buttery flavor. If anyone cooks with coconut oil on the regular I would love some ideas on how to maximize this sample!

The Verdict: I don't follow a ketogenic diet, but I am looking for ways to overall improve my eating habits while trying to be more low-carb. I am over the moon due to the discovery of the meringues, and I thought this was a fun box to try things I wouldn't normally try. I imagine if you strictly follow a ketogenic diet then this box would be even more of a slam dunk for you, too! I also think there is additional value in a box like this because it can be hard to try just one item due to them being sold in bulk, and if you don't like something you're out a decent amount of money.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you’ll receive the August box.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $34.99 + $5 shipping, which means that each of the 12 items in the box has an average cost of $3.33.

I have been following a Keto diet for a short while and was so excited to see this review as I am a self- proclaimed sub box addict and always look forward to MSA to review any box I want to sub to. I believe the reviewer did not do the sub box justice sine she was not up to date on Keto practice. I LOVE her reviews on makeup, bath products, and especially nail polish but this sub review was given to the wrong reviewer. It is difficult to find Keto snacks because while following a Keto diet, snacks are not usually necessary. I am following a strict 800 calorie and 10g carb per day diet and I am rarely hungry because of the high protein and fat I am consuming. All carbs I eat come from vegetables. A Keto box would be awesome but I need facts about products. Taste is practically a non-issue haha.

tracy

is there a keto friendly box that is nut free due to allergies?

Although I appreciate your honesty, I really wish someone that follows the keto diet would do the review. A newbie to the keto diet might not know the meringues aren’t really keto and might want to get those a lot instead of getting their macros.

Followed Keto for sometime and Meringe is allowed for sure If you use a Keto sugar free recipe. It is actually a popular Keto desert.

I love that you’re honest— although I don’t like constant negativity, sometimes I feel reviews can be *too* positive if the box is really not that great. I received this box and am keto. This was definitely not my favorite box (this is my third month, and I think the others were fabulous) but interestingly enough, I liked the opposite things you did.

I would love to see this reviewed by a keto person too, although I love your other reviews/writing style. It’s just tough to give a review if it’s not something you’re familiar with. I would definitely be willing to review this if you’re looking for someone!

I would have liked to see the nutritional info on each product. This seems very high in grams of carbs in ratio to protein but the protein amount in most of the foods wasn’t given or specified. If this box is going to be reviewed regularly, I think it should be reviewed by someone who is following a Keto eating plan.
Since Ragan has an advanced degree in biochemistry, I’d really like to know what she thinks of the Keto diet in general, and this box, specifically. She has incredible knowledge that I certainly don’t have in bio-sciences.

Hey Liz- For those of us who DO follow a ketogenic (or really any of the diet specific) lifestyle, can you at least have the reviewer of these boxes be someone who can actually give us useable feedback, please?
It would help tremendously with product purchasing decisions and give more credibility to the review.
I’m sure the Keto Krate company providing the boxes free would appreciate this as well.
It really does us no good if a reviewer just says “hmm, not my thing, I’ll pass to a friend.”
No disrespect to Jess- I do read & enjoy her bath product and other snack reviews.
But in terms of something that is an expensive lifestyle people that take seriously enough to pay for these boxes, dialing it in just doesn’t help anyone.

I do follow a Keto diet, and I don’t really get this box! First of all, the meringues are useless for Keto. No fat, just like taking sugar alcohol on an empty stomach! That’s a recipe for digestive distress if I’ve ever seen one. I’m not opposed to sweeteners, not at all, but isomalt is not not something I’d ever bake or cook with.
Part of a Keto diet is how satiated you are when eating mainly fat, so snacking isn’t really a part of it! I get the pouches which are almost like “fat bombs” to make sure you’re eating enough, and jerky is useful for trips and stuff, but the meringues really are a bizarre choice for the box! I do make almond and coconut flour cookies sometimes, so the cookie is intriguing.

But hey, if you guys want someone to review the Keto Krate who actually eats Keto, I’d be more than willing!

(I love your reviews, your voice is super engaging and fun, it’s just clear here you aren’t someone who follows a Keto diet!)

I’m glad you commented on those meringues! I kind of had a “what the heck!” Moment with those. They offer absolutely nothing!

Hi Anne!
You’re right, I don’t follow a ketogenic diet. I really appreciate your insight!
