Firstleaf is a monthly wine subscription founded by Philip James, with the goal of creating the most customer-centric wine club.

Firstleaf leaf partners directly with wineries and winemakers to bring the wine straight to members, and boasts that it’s the only wine club that tailors its wine choice to an individual member’s preferences.

You can preview each box before it ships and swap out up to 3 bottles.

Each regular club box from Firstleaf contains 6 bottles of wine; however, this is a review of the introductory special offer box that includes 3 bottles for only $5 each (plus $4.95 shipping) so that they can establish your taste profile based on these preliminary ratings.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Firstleaf Wine Of The Month Club Introductory Box Review

Firstleaf offers a pretty impressive level of customization. You can choose whether to receive all white, all reds, or a mix of both. You can also choose whether to receive US wines, Imported wines, or a mix of both. You can also choose how frequently you’d like to receive boxes and indicate if you’re interested in Rose or Sparkling varieties.

The first included insert was a note from the Founder and CEO, Philip James, welcoming me to the wine club.

Jacks and Swan Cellars 2017 Pinot Grigio (Monterey County, California) – Listed Value $20

Tasting Notes: This aromatic Pinot Grigio has beautiful notes of peach and pear with rich, round texture and acidity.

Awards: 2018 International Women’s Wine Competition Bronze Medal

Hands down, Pinot Grigio is my favorite variety of wine – and this bottle did not disappoint me. I thought that it was rich in flavor, and the notes and lemon and pear shined through. I also love the touch of including an insert about each bottle! It was fun to read before I sipped so I knew what to look for when I was tasting.

You can see from the picture, I enjoyed this bottle on vacation at sunset. Every aspect was perfect!

Le Douleur Exquise 2014 Red Blend (Cotes Catalanes, France) – Listed Value $24

Tasting Notes: Juicy red fruits play off of a full body. The medium acidity means that it will stand up to rich and gamey foods very easily.

Awards: 2018 Critics Challenge International Wine Competition 91 Points; 2018 Critics Challenge International Wine Competition Gold Medal; 2018 International Women’s Wine Competition Bronze Medal; 2018 New York International Wine Competition Bronze Medal

This is a full-bodied red with medium acidity, and to me feels a bit more like a winter red. My husband (the red drinker) enjoyed it, but it was a bit heavy for my personal tastes.

Telling Bird 2014 Zinfandel (Sonoma County, California) – Listed Value $25

Tasting Notes: This is a rich Zinfandel that has all the best Sonoma has to offer. We have been loving the mix of spice and fruity intensity. There is a decent amount of oak that offsets the ripe red fruits.

Awards: 2018 Critics Challenge International Wine Competition Silver Medal; 2018 Press Democrat North Coast Wine Challenge Silver Medal; 2018 North Of The Gate Bronze Medal

This is another bottle that my husband enjoyed, that I most certainly did not. I found it undrinkable – it’s dry, oaky, and spicy – which just isn’t my preference. Tony Soprano probably would have loved this one though!

Verdict: The typical Firstleaf club membership breaks down to around $16.50 per bottle, including shipping, for 6 bottles. Each of the bottles that I received in the introductory shipment seem to retail for at least that, but I was unable to find them listed online at any reputable site. This was just the first month – but 2 of the 3 were off the mark for me. I’ll adjust my preferences and see if next month is better!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Because of the personalization, you may receive different wines than mine!

Coupon: Get your first three bottles for just $5 each plus $4.95 shipping! No coupon needed, just take the sign up quiz to get started.
