World of Drag Summer 2018 Review

The inaugural box kicks things off with a thank you card. It comes with a code for a complimentary 30 day trial (plus $10 off the first 3 months) of the new WOW Presents Plus streaming network from World of Wonder.

There is also a huge info sheet that has photos and descriptions of each SICKENING item included in this quarter's box.

Drag Tots Arugula Enamel Pin

I was struggling to identify this Queen until I realized it's a character from the new animated WOW show, Drag Tots! This sassy lady is named Arugula and is voiced by Drag Race star Valentina. Described as "Drag Race” Meets “Powerpuff Girls”, the series follows five cute pint-sized baby queens who are guided by Corny the Unicorn (voiced by Ru herself) as they go on adventures. The show premieres later this month so I may have to activate my trial membership to check it out! The pin itself is a really nice quality is a little over an inch and a half tall. The packaging is ridiculously clever and looks like a tv that each pin can be seen through. There are five queens to collect so I wonder if we'll get more in future boxes!

"Shaniqua" Squirrel Friend Plush

How do I describe what a squirrel friend is without getting too graphic? Well, let's just say that squirrels are known for hiding their nuts and leave it at that, okcuuur? This fierce little plush squirrel measures five inches from toes to tiara, has killer lashes and is named Shaniqua. More awesome packaging presents itself in the soup can she comes in that is branded with World of Wonder and has all the necessary ingredients listed on the back, like 69% charisma, 69% uniqueness, 69% nerve, and 69% talent. Shaniqua is also part of a collectible series, so we'll be seeing more squirrel friends in upcoming boxes.

Bob the Drag Queen Purse First Makeup Bag

Our first featured Drag Race Queen item comes from season 8 winner Bob the Drag Queen. Her motto in life is "Purse first" and as you can see on the tag above, she believes you should always walk into the room purse first. Taking that catchphrase and slathering it all over this amble sized makeup bag in metallic gold lettering creates a space for you to put all of your essentials. This sturdy faux leather bag is 8 inches long, 4.5 inches wide, and 4 inches tall so you have plenty of room to use this as a travel bag for skincare and makeup routine with room for your toothbrush and other necessities. I'm really impressed with the quality here that comes with a black zipper with gold pull and is even branded with a tag inside and out.

Unicorn Pool Float

If last year was the summer of swan floats, this year is all about the unicorn float. World of Drag can't be like the rest though, so you know that had to have an exclusive black and metallic gold one, branded at the bottom with World of Wonder. The float is pretty large and will accommodate one glamazon to ride into the pool party. Even though the box says to "put between your lips and blow" to inflate, you're best served by using an air pump. Once again, they've nailed the quality on this one from the inside out.

If you're looking for some flair to spruce up your home, look no further than this metal RuPaul art designed by artist Jason Mecier. Look closely to identify all the pink and lavender items that makeup Ru's hair and are a part of many a queen's beauty routines. This collage is printed on metal and embossed to give it a slightly raised effect while the two holes in the top corners allow it to be hung with care. This is the first in a series and comes with a certificate of authenticity so you know that it's serving exclusive realness.

Ru's right-hand woman, friend of many many years, and main judge on Drag Race is Michelle Visage. In her book (which is part autobiography, part self-help) Michelle sets out to guide the reader (queens and common people alike) to be their strong beautiful self. Full of humor, personal photos, tough love, and real talk this book touches on a lot of topics from simply following your dreams, appreciating those around you, and finding your voice to be your own advocate. It overall seems like a really positive book filled with a lot of real emotion and I'm pretty excited to read it cover to cover.

The other featured Queen in the box is season 9 winner Sasha Velour. Instead of playing cards, they are serving up slaying cards which feature Sasha on the back of each card as well as the box. All of the numbered and royal cards are business as usual until you get to the Queen, of course. Sasha gives us four different looks for the four suits to make these slaying cards unique!

The most popular Queens seem to never rest and are always on the road performing, promoting themselves, and meeting adoring fans. Even if you don't see as many places as they do, this luggage tag will set even the most boring suitcase apart. Giving a nod to pop artist Andy Warhol, this rubber soup can-shaped World of Wonder luggage tag is super durable and will take a lot of banging around and still make sure your bag makes it home to you even if lost.

Verdict: I am really impressed with the first quarterly World of Drag box. Seven of the eight items are exclusive and this box has some of the highest quality branded items I've seen in a subscription box. I love that there will be reoccurring collectible series like the squirrel friends plushes, enamel pins, and art mixed in with items that feature Drag Race Superstars. Since none the items but the book are available to purchase anywhere else, I can only base the value on the quality and content and I think they knocked both out of the park. The items are tongue-and-cheek, useful, and really fun. I think any fan of Drag Race would love seeing this in their mailbox every three months.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes! This box is still available so sign up now "and don't f*ck it up" (as RuPaul would say).

We generally bill on the 5th of the second month of each quarter for renewing subscriptions (February, May, August, and November). If you have a quarterly subscription, it will be every quarter; a two-quarter subscription will be billed every two quarters; etc.

Value Breakdown: At $68.00 for this box you are paying $8.50 for each item.

Keep Track of Your Subscriptions: Add this box to your subscription list or wishlist!

Great review, but I’m *really* glad I didn’t subscribe. Not my type of stuff I guess.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!! Now THIS is how you do a fresh idea life style box! The black unicorn float is everything! Fabulous box although for as fun as it is I wouldn’t have a use for many of the items (although I live in Boystown so wouldn’t be hard to find homes for items) so would need to price to be lower. This is the type of energy I expected from Slutbox.

Marne, thanks for such a gag-worthy review! Your reviews are always so much fun to read. I can’t believe I never figured out before what exactly squirrel friends meant, so thanks for that too. I’m with others in saying that the spoilers seemed pretty good to me, but this review made it OMG I want this!

Hahaha thanks, Kimberly! I am honestly really impressed with the quality of everything. Very polished and almost all exclusive is really the way to go for a fan box like this!

I totally agree with everything you said too!!! I too just learned what squirrel friend refers to and I’m loving it!

I didn’t understand squirrel friends, either, apparently.

I really want this box :(. Every item is perfect although I definitely don’t need any of it. However, 68 dollars is a lot of money for a “fun” box.

Wow, that 80s hair on Michelle is quite the thing, thanks for the screenshot! Also, I nearly didn’t recognize Sasha Velour with hair, but the red looks great for her. 🙂

When I first saw the spoilers, I wasn’t too impressed but after your review, I’m on board! I really love this and I can’t wait for the next one!

What a cool box! In my opinion, better than Amber’s “Slutbox”. It just seems like quality items and the message from “Queens” always seems to be positive and to be yourself. Just an overall great message regardless of who is wearing what. lol

I have always loved Ru from years and years ago but just can’t justify the box cost for this one sadly. But well done review Marne. 🙂
