WODBOM stands for “Workout of the Day–Box of the Month” and is a subscription box designed for CrossFit enthusiasts, by CrossFit enthusiasts. (Although, I don’t think you absolutely have to be into CrossFit to get something out of this box, as long as you are interested in working out!)

WODBOM June 2018 Review

Let’s see what WODBOM thinks we need for our summer fitness goals:

Included was an information card describing the products in the box.

There was also some product literature this month, as usual.

Lurong Living Essential (60 capsules)

Lurong Living Essential (60 capsules) – Retail Value $39.95 (found here for $34.95)

This is ground up velvet deer antler. I think there are some things to be said for taking a product like this (if you are not vegan or vegetarian, anyway). It has glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, it has collagen, and it has hyaluronic acid, and all of these are important to joint health (and skin, hair, nails, etc.).

However, there’s a bit of nonsense on the product page as well, which calls lab-synthesized nutrients “dead” and compares them to silk flowers. If a chemical isolated from an organism shares the same structure as a chemical from a lab, it’s identical, and that’s all there is to it. If you want to get into a discussion about the benefits of whole food products, which may contain some nutrients that are not in lab-created supplement blends, that is a different matter. Velvet antlers (this is a stage of development) are removed from living animals rather than being shed naturally so I’m just going to pass this along to someone else.

Strong Like Bull Apparel Commander Tank – Retail Value $25

This is lightweight and good for summer workouts where you just don’t want a ton of clothes on in the heat (though obviously, you would want a sports bra under this). Men received a tee instead. This is a little loose on me but that is to be expected since it is size S and I really need an XS (but most fitness subscriptions don’t offer that). It will work just fine for cardio workouts, though. (On the product page, it doesn’t look like it’s supposed to be skin-tight.)

Backattack Snacks Wasabi Ginger Almonds (1.5 oz)

Backattack Snacks Wasabi Ginger Almonds (1.5 oz) – Buy ½ Pound for $9

I was a little afraid to try these because I saw they had wasabi flavoring, and I was suffering from a terrible cold/bronchitis when I received this box, and I just didn’t want anything messing with the delicate balance of my nasal passages. However, I tried one, and it wasn’t that strong, so I went ahead and finished off my half of the package (I typically share subscription box snacks with my husband) to no ill effect. If you like wasabi but don’t want something that makes your mucous membranes feel like they’re burning, this is a good choice.

Bee Free Auggy’s Original Warrior Mix (9 oz)

Bee Free Auggy’s Original Warrior Mix (9 oz) – Retail Value $8.95

This is grain free, gluten-free, paleo “granola.” FYI, “Bee Free” does not mean what it seems like it should mean, because this does, in fact, contain honey. (But it is vegetarian, just not vegan.) This is a standard nut and seed sort of treat, but softer, and I actually thought it was pretty good. (FYI, real Paleolithic people wouldn’t have eaten almonds, which this contains, because they would’ve been poisonous…and the Wikipedia page for the paleo diet is kind of snarky.) As a snack, though, I enjoyed this and would totally be up for sampling some of the other flavors.

Bubba’s Fine Foods ‘Nana Chips in Macho Nacho (2.7 oz) – Buy a 12-Pack for $32.99

I have had plain banana chips before, both fried in coconut oil and freeze-dried, and I have enjoyed them. I was a little suspicious of putting nacho flavor on them (but then, I have eaten fried plantains with similar spices, and that’s not terribly different). These are vegan and have nutritional yeast instead of cheese, and well, nutritional yeast just doesn’t taste like cheese. (This also has spices like chipotle, cumin, onion, garlic, etc.) The flavor here was honestly quite mild but these were addictive to eat, nonetheless. I would definitely be willing to try these in other flavors and I actually think this is something that would work with either savory or sweet flavors, based on my experience here.

Verdict:  I couldn’t calculate a total value for the June WODBOM since not all of the items were available for individual sale. This box is $43 per month, though, and the “granola,” tank, and supplement add up to about $74, so the other two snacks are basically just bonuses. I couldn’t try the supplement, but the snacks were all vegetarian and they were all new to me (and pretty good, as well), so overall I am happy.

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? No, WODBOM ships on the 5th of the month, so your first box would be July's.

Value Breakdown: This box costs$35 a month + $8 shipping, which means that each of the 5 items in the box has an average cost of $8.60.

That’s fairly icky but I also think bully sticks for dogs are gross.
I’d love to see a store or box carry only supplements and vitamins that are tested and shown to have the ingredients on the label.

There’s info here about why they assume antlers are great for supplements. 😞

I have bachelor’s degrees in biology and chemistry and a PhD in biochemistry so I figure I should use them sometimes…

I don’t know whether this is national or just regional, but I live near the banks of a major slow moving river and with many acres of a nut food tree orchard close by as well.
Deer come from across the river every day to graze in the orchards and also to seek shelter from the heat ( or cold) there.

It has been said that there is a wasting disease affecting some to most of the deer population in this part of the US. I do not see unhealthy deer, nor do I know the origin, but recalling the way BSE was transmitted through animal tissue to humans in Europe, I would NOT under any circumstances consider the deer velvet horn product safe at this time if the deer which had the temporary horns removed were in N. America.

Objectively, I think deer rub their heads on trees to remove these velvet horns, but I doubt the mass removal process is humane.

I love deer and strongly object to this product for two vastly different personal reasons- one unproven risk to the user, and one definitely a strong possibility of animal mistreatment.

BSE is primarily (though not exclusively) transmitted through neural tissue, of which antlers are not. (Prions may also be found in bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes, and *maybe* blood, but imprecise slaughter practices may be transferring them from one part of the animal to another, or from one animal carcass to another.)

Velvet antlers are an immature stage. Mature antlers are shed naturally each year but the “nutrient” profile would be different.

Wow I. Can’t. Believe they take the antlers off of live deer that’s terrible! I would be insulted if those supplements came in my mailbox!! And for the value of this box to me is a big 👎!!! No way am I paying almost 50$ big ones for basically 3 snacks & tortured deer supplements!

I wonder why they would include something harvested from a live animal in a fitness box. I mean I understand it’s a “supplement” which fitness conscious folks usually get on board with. What I don’t understand is why this controversial item would be in a wellness/fitness box that many of their subbies are Vegetarian or Vegan. It just seems like a bad marketing move on their part.

A lot of the fitness boxes claim to not have very many vegan and/or vegetarian subscribers. Which I honestly kind of believe based on the number of jerky snacks, collagen-containing supplements, and the like.

In New Zealand, the animals are required to be anesthetized before the antlers are removed, but I do not know if that is true in other places, and I am not sure where this supplement comes from.
