VetPet Box (Cat Version) June 2018 Review
Every month, Vet Pet Box sends toys, supplies, and wellness items. The wellness items this time around relate to urinary tract health and litter box use:
Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box.
This month, a lot of the material is about cat urinary tract problems. There’s a suggestion to have one litter box per cat. This is fine, and I do have five litter boxes, but I think it’s kind of funny that they think each cat will only use one box and you can, therefore, tell who has issues based on which box the issues are in. (My cats use whatever boxes they want to and I have absolutely no control over the matter.) There’s also a warning about male cats who vocalize and don’t pass urine and yes, we’ve been there, at 1 PM on a Saturday afternoon with Monkey at the emergency vet (this was 6 years ago; turns out he has lower urinary tract disease).
Pet Qwerks Cat Babble Ball – Retail Value $9.61 (found on sale here for $7.97)
I did not know they made these for cats. This one supposedly has catnip in it (I don’t know how I would tell…) but it makes noises and/or talks when it moves. My cats found it interesting but none of them were in the mood to bat around a hardball toy (Angus and Monkey are interested in this type of activity from time to time). This is stored on a high shelf so no one finds it in the night. I am familiar with both of the dog versions of this toy and, while funny, they can get irritating if they constantly go off.
Mad Cat Strawpurry Ice Cream Toy – Retail Value $4.99
We love Mad Cat toys. I am sure I have this same one somewhere, but this one is new and fresh. And, as you will see, Madison thought it was the greatest thing ever.
Mad Cat Purrfect Pineapple – Retail Value $4.99
Yay, another Mad Cat toy. Monkey was very interested in this one. These toys have catnip and silvervine, which is also a cat attractant (that seems to be particularly effective on Madison).
Kit4Cat Urine Sample Collection Sand – Retail Value $16.95 (found on sale here for $14.95)
I am not sure if the item I received has the same weight as the box I linked to, which is 2 lbs, but it is certainly not more than that. Just the packaging is a little different, I think. This is hydrophobic sand. You put it in a clean box, shut your cat in a room with the box, and wait until s/he pees, then collect the urine and take it to the vet. I am sure there are circumstances where this would be useful, and I’m going to keep it around, but my vet generally wants a sterile sample if we suspect a UTI (so, ultrasound machine and big needle into the bladder). This might be handy to collect urine to use one of those home-based tests to see if a trip to the vet is warranted.
Wellness Kittles Chicken and Cranberries – Retail Value $2.49 (found on sale here for $2.37)
These are small, crunchy treats. They went well with the treat ball (see below). They come in a resealable package and I find that Wellness is usually a good brand. Madison, Angus, and Sneaky were particular fans.
My Little Lion Totally Tuna Recipe – Retail Value $4.99 (currently out of stock)
I haven’t opened these yet but we have had them several times before and I think my cats prefer this brand of treats to nearly all others. They have an ingredient called “animal plasma” and I guess that really makes these smell and taste good to kitties. These are semi-moist treats.
CatIt Treat Ball – Retail Value $11.52
This is a treat-dispensing ball. Most of my cats can’t figure these out. Only Madison gets them. So what the other cats do is watch him and then steal the treats when he knocks them out. (I made sure to give Madison some treats separately so he wouldn’t be disappointed.)

He did find the pineapple toy quite interesting.

Mr. Kitty was not in the greatest mood this day. He had been acting like his eye hurt, so I took him to the vet, and while it turns out he just has his usual problems (distorted cornea), I said he was pawing at it after his eye drops and she suggested an e-collar for awhile. (Naturally, this all happens when the veterinary ophthalmologist is out of town…)
Verdict: I calculated a value of $55.54 for June’s VetPet Box. That’s about $10 above the cost of the box. There were a lot of things to try out here. I think the treats and the Mad Cat toys were the biggest hits, but the Babble Ball got some interesting responses and the sand can’t really go bad, so I’m keeping it in my ever-growing cat/dog first aid area. VetPet Box is really helping me build my supply of pet health/wellness items up, that’s for sure.
