NeuroBox June 2018 Review
I am interested in the idea of brain health and thought this box had an unusual premise when compared to other subscription boxes out there, so I was eager to see what was inside:
The box came with this information card. On one side was a list of the items in the box and on the other side, there was a mental exercise to try.
There was also some literature for one of the products in the box.
Azoth Total Energy (60 count) – Retail Value $29.95
This is one of the least scary energy supplements I’ve seen for awhile. It has yerba mate, which does contain caffeine, but I have totally drunk yerba mate tea before with no ill effects. It has L-theanine, which is found in tea and is supposed to be calming. It has MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil which is a fatty component of coconut oil among other things and is supposed to be immediately available for energy. And it has Rhodiola rosea, which is the one unknown here for me. WebMD says it is safe when taken by mouth for 6-10 weeks, though also says there is insufficient evidence for its effectiveness. Anyway, I am just getting over a nasty cold and bronchitis, and am off my prescriptions now (wanted to wait for that to start anything), and have been super sleepy during the day. So far I have not had any issues with this, though the true test will come during the work week. (All products with this subscription are cruelty-free; this is in veggie capsules.)
Britefocus Britesmart Nootropic (60 count) – Retail Value $59.95
Last month there was a snafu with packaging and one bottle didn’t contain a full supply of the product therein, so we were promised a full-size nootropic supplement this month to make up the difference. I haven’t started this one yet; it also has Rhodiola rosea and I didn’t want to be taking two different products with that ingredient at the same time. Also, it would be hard to tell which effects, if any, came from which product. This one is supposed to improve memory and increase mental focus by affecting cerebral blood circulation and oxygen and glucose uptake. (I saved this one for second because there is a warning about checking interactions if you are on a prescription and I need to verify that all the ingredients, including the herbs I’m less familiar with, are safe with blood pressure medicine.)
Gypsy Tonic #33 (8 fl oz) – Retail Value $9.95
This is a new brand for me and I have to say, I really like the packaging. This one contains guarana, so it is naturally caffeinated. It also has Asian ginseng, maca, and cacao, all of which I have tried before in various forms. This bottle is good for two full servings and the product literature I pictured earlier offers some ideas on how to try it. I’ve just been putting a little in my morning smoothies since I figured the cacao flavor would work pretty well with my other ingredients. I think it gives a nice little boost without being too much (wouldn’t want it to conflict with anything else I might be sampling at the moment).
Nothing but the Fruit Strawberry (1 oz) – Buy 8 Pouches for $10.32 (found here for $9.80)
I’ve had this before, maybe from Love with Food? Anyway, it’s just pureed fruit that is dehydrated and cut into little cubes. (This is mostly grape and apple based, with only a little strawberry, and there is some added citrus fiber as well. But it does taste like strawberry.) This has a lot of sugar in one pouch but it is natural fruit sugar and not added. This would be good in a situation when you can’t take fresh fruit with you.
Poketto Sudoku Volume 2 – Estimated Value $2
I can’t find this for sale new anywhere (I guess the keywords are too generic for most web searches) but it was on eBay for about $2 so that is the value I am using. I like Sudoku and I have put this in my purse (in an old Ipsy bag with a pen) so that if I unexpectedly have to wait somewhere I will have something to do (since I don’t have a smartphone).
Viter Energy Wintergreen (20 count) – Retail Value $4.99
I am familiar with this product from many fitness subscription boxes. These are xylitol mints with a lot of caffeine and some B vitamins. I like them although some people could find them a little bitter due to the caffeine. I will be throwing these in my purse as I am more likely to need them during long afternoons in the office.
Verdict: There were six items in this month’s NeuroBox. One was meant to make up for the missing supplement capsules in last month’s box, but overall, the two bottles of capsules and the tonic were full-sized, as was the tin of Viter Mints, and I suppose technically the Sudoku book and snack as well. So, definitely in the range of 5-7 full-sized items promised, even if you subtract one supplement bottle. The value of the two supplements, the tonic, and the mints together was $104.84, which is well above the cost of the box plus shipping, making the Sudoku book and snack basically bonuses. In terms of the contents of the box, I feel that it is staying true to its mission of providing some type of brain teaser and various supplements and snacks for improving memory and brain function. It seems this box is always going to be pretty heavy on the supplements, so do keep that in mind if you are planning to sign up. (Also keep in mind that this box is suitable for vegetarians, which is a nice bonus as far as I am concerned.)
