Foodstirs Firecracker Treat Pop Kit

Everything You Need

This month's Foodstirs kit is a set of 6 cake pops perfect for the 4th of July! You will need to supply a few wet ingredients (milk, eggs, butter, and yogurt) and some basic baking tools, but otherwise, everything is included.

Instructions

I've definitely never made cake in push-pop form before, but my three year old loves to help in the kitchen (and loves to make a mess, of course), so I knew he'd get a kick out of this project. These kits are always broken down into 6 steps, so they're manageable and fun to do with kids.

Decor Card

Since we're making cake pops this month, they also included a card that you can use to decorate your box and turn it into a cake pop holder!

Nutritional Facts

On the back, there are nutrition facts with the calories and ingredient listings for each mix. As usual, the calories for the wet ingredients that you add (eggs, butter, milk, yogurt) are not included here, so you need to do that math yourself if you want to see how these stack up in total.

There's definitely a significant amount of butter in these, so keep that in mind! Even though this box contains healthier and more natural ingredients, it's not necessarily diet food. 😉

Cake Mix

All of the dry mixes are pre-measured for you; above is the vanilla cake mix. We added milk, eggs, butter, and yogurt, and my 3 year old did most of the mixing himself:

Since you need such thin pieces of cake to assemble the pops, you actually bake this in a half sheet pan!

While the cake was baking, we moved on to making the icing!

Icing Mix

For this mix, you add butter and yogurt to this main packet, and then divide it in half to make red and blue dyed icings using the included color packets.

Natural Food Dyes

These are natural dyes made with ingredients like beets and spirulina, and they are surprisingly bright! My son loves this part the most:

The color continues to get even richer after you let the icing sit for a bit after mixing. We scraped our icing into two zip lock bags and put it into the fridge to cool. Later, you cut a corner off the baggie to apply the icing.

After this we had to take a little clean-up break while we waited for the cake to finish baking and cooling. Then it was time to start assembly!

Push Pops

Foodstirs included 6 cake pop molds in the box; they always include any extra items like this that you might need. I like that these are reusable, too, so we can totally make new kinds of cake pops in the future if we want!

Empty Push Pop

Using the cake pop itself as kind of a cookie cutter, you cut circles from your big flat sheet cake. 🙂 You only need 24 but I had a lot of extras– so this is a very forgiving recipe if you mess up during the decoration stage. I froze our extra cake, too, so I can use it for more pops or some other fun recipe this summer. (Birthday cake ice cream maybe?)

Natural Sprinkles

Foodstirs also included this naturally-dyed red, white, and blue sparkly sugar to top things off.

I found it easier to do the assembly after using the included cutting guide to turn our box into a cake pop holder; it was too hard to manage picking up and setting down the cake pops otherwise, because your hands will definitely get a little covered in cake. Assembly is as simple as stacking cake rounds alternated with icing!

Ultimately I ended up getting icing and stuff on the card, so I tossed it before we took our final photos:

Our finished Firecracker Treat Pops

Seriously, so cute! I feel like a regular Christina Tosi over here.

Chilling the icing for a few minutes definitely helps it hold it's shape, so you can get a nice swirl on the top when you squeeze it from the bag.

These cake pops also included lids, so these would be easy to cap off and bring on a play date or on a 4th of July picnic.

My son got a big kick out of eating these, too! Pushing the cake up to eat it was a fun novelty, even if we did end up in the tub right after this because he was covered in icing. 🙂

Taste wise, these were great, too. I really love the Foodstirs base cake mix, and the icing is a good complement in terms of sweetness. We shared these with co-workers and everyone loved them!

Verdict: It's been a few months since I've reviewed this box, and this was a really great project to re-start with! Each individual step is easy and fun to do with kids, but the final result is really unique and looks super cool in my opinion– much more fun than if I tried to invent something on my own. With a three year old, this project took about 1.5 hours (including a kind of rushed cooling time).

The only downside to this subscription for me is the shipping cost– it was $14.80 to ship the bimonthly recurring subscription kit to Pennsylvania! Yikes. I reached out to Foodstirs to confirm that price, and they mentioned that shipping will be lowered to $7.99 starting in August.

Prepaid plans have a better deal on shipping, so if you're interested in signing up now I would recommend considering the prepaid subscription instead:

  • The 3 box plan is $79 including shipping, or $26.33 total per box
  • The 6 box plan is $149 including shipping, or $24.83 per box
  • The 12 box plan is $279 including shipping, or $23.25 per box

Now, I don't have a Whole Foods super convenient to where I live (the closest one is about a 30 minute drive each way), so it can be expensive and time consuming for me to buy organic and natural baking products. As a working mom, I'm always short on time and don't get to plan fun activities to share with my son as much as I'd like, so having a service like this that gives me ready-to-go projects with almost everything I need already in the box is great.

Also, we're not frequent bakers and don't keep a lot of sweet treats in the house, so I prefer the every-other-month shipping frequency. These are fun rainy-day and summer vacation projects, and the seasonal themes make them really fun to share, too.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, this box is still available!

Value Breakdown: For one premium baking kit shipped every other month, the price is currently $33.79 ($18.99 + $14.80 shipping) or $30.00 with our 20% off coupon code ($15.20 + $14.80 shipping)– although it sounds like shipping will be cheaper beginning in August. Prepaid plans also offer discounts on shipping (see above for a breakdown).

Kits typically have anywhere from 6 to 12 servings. This box has 6, which means each cake pop would be about $5.63 each.

This is so cute. My daughter would love it. The only thing that’s holding me back from this box is the shipping charge.

Even with reduced shipping charges, this seems insanely overpriced for what you get.

You can buy the reusable push up things for less than $5.00 and while I understand that these are theoretically made with “healthy” ingredients, one can buy healthy food dyes on the internet and healthy cake mixes are widely available in most decent grocery stores – or the internet if one doesn’t want to just measure out some flour and sugar 🙂

Really this seems intended for someone who has more money to waste than sense since it’s so easily duplicated for pennies. And one can get all kinds of fabulous cookie cutters on the internet – my kids never got bored with decorating cookies for different holidays or just as a fun activity.

Hi Amarante! This is Kimmie, Director of Marketing at Foodstirs. I’m sorry to hear about your experience. Please note that starting August 1st our shipping costs will only be $7.99.

Our mixes are made with all organic, no GMO ingredients, including Identity Preserved flour and biodynamic sugar – that is better for you and better for the earth. While you can certainly purchase the ingredients for an organic, no GMO cake with all natural dyes, and cake decorating tools our kits make everything easy for you so that you can focus more on your family and having fun rather than finding and prepping ingredients. Additionally, our mixes cost less than the cost of purchasing the ingredients on their own. I’d love to send you some Baker’s Bucks so that you can try one of our mixes for free, so please send me your email to [email protected]. You can truly taste the difference of our higher quality ingredients.

I cancelled this sub due to that ridiculous shipping charge. Then they made it so hard to cancel and we’re so sketchy that I won’t do business with them again.
