Doodle Crate May 2018 Review
This month’s project is making paper bowls! The skill focus is sculpting with paper. My ten-year-old son usually does these projects. This is the booklet that came in our box this month.
Here’s a peek inside the booklet at the instructions. They were clear and well illustrated, so they were easy for my son to follow. The booklet also always contains good tips and suggestions for practicing.
These are all the supplies that were included for this month’s project. Everything we needed was included except scissors and water.
My son’s first step was to dip little strips of newsprint into water and mold them around the bowl form that was supplied.
He then had to create a glue and water solution that he used in all the additional steps.
Why yes, this project was incredibly messy! Haha. His next step was to dip the newsprint strips in the glue solution, squeeze out the excess by running the strips through his fingers, and then add a second layer to the mold.
He let the mold dry overnight. The next day, he carefully pried the bowl from the form.
He put the bowl back onto the form for support and dabbed the glue solution on the outside. Then he covered it with colored tissue paper. So pretty!
After the outside dried, he removed the bowl from the form and repeated the process on the inside of the bowl.
This is my son’s completed bowl! It’s so cute! It’s actually pretty sturdy, too, so I think he could use it for lots of different dry items.
The Verdict: Doodle Crate is SO awesome! My son and I completely love this subscription. This month’s project was super messy, which my son did not like, but honestly… I told him if you want to make art you have to get messy sometimes! He likes the way his bowl turned out, and I think he really likes it when one of his projects is something useful like this. I think it’s adorable! I still can’t believe what Doodle Crate can provide for $20. When you consider the materials, the curation, the project selection, and instructions, that’s really a bargain!
