Deck of Scarlet May/June 2018 Review

This month's palette was designed by fashion and makeup personality, Kim Thai. Known for her fierce looks and innovative makeup hacks, Kim's love for fearlessly rich and romantic hues is made apparent with each swipe of this palette's pigmented berry shades (swatches to come, of course!).

Check out Kim's tutorial for Deck of Scarlet's Edition 08 box here.

Let's get to the makeup, shall we?

The palette arrived in a protective paper sleeve that mimics that design on the palette itself. Deck of Scarlet keeps their collection of palettes super consistent with an exclusively black-and-white design for each. This approach results in a really cohesive compilation!

"A modern day fairytale: unapologetically romantic and dreamy chic shades" is the headline on the back of the sleeve. With a mix of satin and matte finishes, it looks like we can expect to find lots of "romantic berry shades and charismatic neutrals" inside this palette. All ingredients are listed here as well.

I love the font that they chose to use for this palette's design! It perfectly reflects the romantic and rosy shades within, as does the "Dream" title. It's also awesome that this month's palette includes a separate opening flat for lip colors (a few don't include this feature).

Super convenient for a no-mess travel situation. And look at those shades! Gorgeous!

The makeup inside arrived with a protective plastic barrier. These shades all have a pink-y/champagne undertone. Super wearable! At first glance, I could already tell that Myth is a perfectly versatile blending color and that Enchanted would be a blast to play around with. Packaging-wise, I should also add that the generously sized mirror is a great addition for on-the-go touch-ups. The Deck of Scarlet website offers so many tips and tricks that are specific to each palette, as well.

This palette includes the following:

2 lip colors:

  • Kiss - Rosy matte nude
  • Maiden - Bright berry satin

3 eyeshadows:

  • Enchanted - Gold/pink duo chrome shimmer
  • Crown - Rosy mauve matte
  • Myth - Warm beige nude matte

2 cheek colors:

  • Fairy Dust - Rose gold shimmer
  • Tiara - Bold matte rose

A lip gloss is also included:

Hi-Shine Lipgloss in Love Spell - Multi-faceted nude shimmer with subtle holographic glitter.

Here's everything swatched. L-R (or bottom-top): Love Spell, Kiss, Maiden, Enchanted, Crown, Myth, Fairy Dust, Tiara. My skin is about an NW20 for context.

And here's a peek at my final look. I'm really happy with how incredibly wearable these shades are for everyday! The rose hues are also super flattering on my warm skin tone, but I think they'd be especially flattering on cooler, darker skin tones as well. More details on how I achieved this look below!

As usual, I began my makeup routine with my favorite skincare products, primer, and tinted moisturizer. I then went in with concealer, setting powder, and brown gel (with just a touch of pencil to fill in). Everything else on my face sans eyeliner and mascara is from the 08 Dream Palette.

Starting with my eyes, I kept it pretty simple with Enchanted all over the lid and Myth to blend out in the crease. I'm obsessed with the subtly duo chrome effect that Enchanted provides, shifting from gold to pink and giving a true rose gold finish. I swept it along my lower lash line as well. I then used a bit of the Fairy Dust highlighter on my inner corners and then went with a black liquid liner cat eye and black mascara. Easy!

Onto cheeks and lips! I was so pleased with how wonderfully the Tiara blush and Kiss lipstick worked with this rosy eye. All of the shades in this palette are 100% in the same color family, so it's impossible to mess up any number of combinations. I applied Tiara high on the cheek and then blended in towards the apples. Fairy Dust was lightly swept on top, and you can really see its rose gold undertone in the above photo! Kiss finished my look with truly perfect 'my lips but better' mauve-y rose. I'm a huge fan of a shimmery eye and matte lip, so this combination was perfect for my personal preferences. I really can't stress enough: such a great palette for everyday!

Here's my 'date night' look. The only change being the addition of the Love Spell lipgloss. 🙂 This gloss is basically the lip product equivalent of Enchanted eyeshadow: some sparkle, some hue-shifting holographic properties, and an overall rose gold finish. I applied it directly over Kiss, and I think it did a good job of making my lips look a little bigger, right? Wishful thinking?

This is definitely a sort of monochromatic makeup look, but you could swap out the lip for Maiden to create a statement lip or even opt for a total neutral eye with Myth for some variation!

Verdict: I'm loving the quality of Deck of Scarlet's bi-monthly assortment. This palette is absolutely ideal for summer with its warm pinks and glowy golds, and I found the quality of the shadows and blushes to be pigmented and creamy. The lipsticks were also long-lasting, and Kiss is my new favorite go-to for a rosy lip look.

The listed value from Deck of Scarlet is $80, and I'd agree that this set is worth somewhere around that range. This box is a terrific value considering the $29.95 price tag. If you enjoy experimenting with your makeup, this box would be perfect for you. I can't wait to see what future palettes have in store!

This is the best palette they’ve had yet. I don’t subscribe but read these reviews EVERY DAY! It’s a highlight if my day. IMO,
Most have been funky and just too darn bold.

This review felt very sales pitchy and like an actual ad for deck of scarlet? I don’t know it didn’t seem as truthful as past reviews of other beauty boxes. Usually the reviewer can name at least one thing they don’t love but this rescue, absolutely everything was perfect…even the price tag which is pretty high…

You look absolutely beautiful in these photos. The earrings are gorgeous and those walls behind you… I’d love to paint a room in my house black! I’d love to know what tinted moisturizer your wearing because your skin looks flawless and if that’s your real skin we need some skincare tips asap.

These palettes are so pretty! Sadly I have too much makeup and always end up just wearing my go to brands (the balm, too faced and KVD) love your application though, you look really pretty!
