Yumble Kids Meal Delivery Box April 2018 Review

The box included 3 large ice packs that work very well to keep the inside of the box cool. These can be reused or they can be thawed and recycled once you dispose of the gel inside. The packing material you see around the edges is not recyclable, but it is made from recycled materials and their FAQs section recommends that it be used for crafts. The trays that they serve the food in are safe to use in both oven and microwave and are degradable.

All of the meals come in these cute little cardboard wraps with a peekaboo window telling you what’s inside. The reverse side contains a mask that kids can color, which is a fun idea that my kids enjoyed.

This week I received my Weekly Fun Pack with free activities and collectibles. In your first box, you are supposed to receive a Welcome Pack to get you started. From the Yumble Kids site:

In addition to a weeks worth of delicious meals, upon subscribing to Yumble, all customers are sent a welcome pack that includes some fun things for the kids and subscription guide for the parents. Parents can send us a picture of their children with their completely filled in charts in order to receive a prize! For every subsequent delivery, children receive collectible coins that may be traded in for really fun prizes.

You might know from my first review that I did not receive a Welcome Pack in my first box. I reached out to customer service and after assuring me that they would send a Welcome Pack in my next delivery, I still did not get one. I reached out to customer service again and they offered to send it in my next box, but I told them that’s what they had said before, so finally, they mailed it separately and it arrived well after my second box.

Here is what came in my Welcome Pack:

I wish that I had received this in my first box or at least with my second because it has useful information and describes what I think is an important part of this service. This includes coloring sheets, trading cards and “caught you being good” coins that you can give your kids, but most importantly the chart that your kids can fill out and send back in for a prize. I’m glad that I finally received it, but it shouldn’t have been that difficult for me to get this sent to me as a new customer.

I planned this week’s meals to coincide with the birth of my son so that I would have something quick and easy at home to feed the kids while trying to get settled into our new routine with 3 kids. These come fully prepared which makes it easy, plus they have a Use By date that can be as much as 4 weeks past the date you receive them. This was very helpful considering my baby boy showed up much later than I expected! Inside our weekly fun pack was this helpful sheet on heating tips.

Each week you have the option to either select your own meals or let them select for you. I opted to pick my meals so that I could try some different meals than last time. The inner containers all have the nutrition labels on top with the use by date and preparation instructions.

Quinoa Pizza Cups with Roasted Broccoli and Shaved Parmesan Cheese

320 calories per serving, 10 grams of fat, 2 grams of sugar, 13 grams of protein

Prep: Heat tray in oven for 10-12 minutes (microwave is an option too!)

This meal was a bit disappointing. There was a good amount of cheese on top and the cups kind of stuck together in the oven. The flavor wasn’t great and the texture was a bit too mushy. The broccoli was average but tasted a little overcooked. My daughter wanted to eat these cute little cups, but once she tried them, she wasn’t really a fan.

Pizza Empanadas with Lightly Steamed Green Beans and Marinara Sauce

200 calories per serving, 9 grams of fat, 3 grams of sugar, 8 grams of protein

Prep: Remove marinara, heat tray in the oven for 10-12 minutes (microwave is an option too!)

This was basically just a big doughy pocket of cheese with a little bit of sauce. I thought it was pretty good, but it didn’t feel like a very filling meal since it only came with green beans. My son enjoyed this one and liked that he got to dip it in the marinara sauce that came with it.

Pulled Chicken Pocket with Sweet Potato Mash and Steamed Green Beans

410 calories per serving, 9 grams of fat, 6 grams of sugar, 19 grams of protein

Prep: Heat tray in the oven for 10-12 minutes (microwave is an option too!)

The pulled chicken pocket was good, but it was a little bit dry. I liked that it came with sweet potato mash and green beans. It felt like a very complete meal and seemed well rounded. Unfortunately, the sweet potato mash and green beans tasted a bit sour like vinegar and since they were in the same compartment I’m not sure which it came from. Nothing in the ingredients indicated vinegar so I almost feel like maybe the sweet potatoes were bad? We used it before the date on the package though so I’m really not sure what the case was.

Mac N Cheese Ravioli with Dried Apricots, Chocolate Pretzels, and Marinara Sauce

460 calories per serving, 11 grams of fat, 30 grams of sugar, 9  grams of protein

Prep: Remove apricots, pretzels and marinara, heat tray in the oven for 8-10 minutes (microwave is an option too!)

While this was the most unhealthy meal, I actually really liked this one and so did the kids. It was filling and while it wasn’t super flavorful, I thought it was yummy. It was basically just ravioli with cheddar and ricotta inside which was a great combination. There was a decent amount of ravioli and of course, the chocolate covered pretzels were a nice treat!

Chicken Pops! With Sweet Couscous and Apple Dipping Sauce

220 calories per serving, 3.5 grams of fat, 7 grams of sugar, 13 grams of protein

Prep: Remove applesauce cup, heat tray in the oven for 15 minutes (microwave is an option too!)

So my sleep deprived mom brain thought I had a picture of the nutrition label already, but somehow I missed it so I included the nutrition info that’s on their website for you to see. These were actually really good and fun for the kids since they were shaped like lollipops. They were like thick mini chicken patties, but since they were small I really wish it came with at least 3. We didn’t really love the applesauce as a dipping sauce although it tasted good on its own. The couscous was a little dry but it was good and I like that it had cranberries, dried apricots, and butternut squash mixed in.

Sweet N Sour Meatballs with a Side of Orzo and Peas

280 calories per serving, 14 grams of fat, 6 grams of sugar, 15 grams of protein

Prep: Cover with foil and heat tray in the oven for 15 minutes (microwave is an option too!)

My daughter was excited to try these because she loves meatballs, but she wasn’t crazy about them. They tasted like plain ground beef with a little bit of seasoning and some tangy sauce. I thought the orzo and peas were really good though and it was a decent size portion for that. The 3 meatballs were small so it felt like a pretty light meal overall.

Verdict: This week we only really enjoyed about half of our meals. Once again, I appreciated the convenience and the fact that they last longer than a week. This time, the main courses were not as good as what we received last month, but this time the sides were actually a little better and felt more substantial.

Each of these meals cost $7.99 which is probably more than I’d like to pay per meal for my kids, but at the moment when we are adjusting to being a family of five and I am clearly a bit sleep deprived, I felt like the value was there for us. I think this is a service that is great on an as-needed basis, which makes it convenient especially considering you can skip a week anytime you want.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

I wouldn’t use a service like this, it’s too $$$ and the food looks gross. I cook and my kids eat. If they aren’t feeling it, they can make themselves a bowl of cereal, eggs and toast, or a pbj. They’ve been doing that since about 5ish. Well, not the eggs lol But, my kids don’t have sensory issues or food adversions, and I call my kids garbage cans, they pretty much eat anything. But these, my kids would look at me like I lost my mind.

I love the idea of this though the execution seems off (portion sizes/general flavors). I have a 3 year old and 1 and a half year old, and though 99% of the time they eat what I make the rest of the family for dinner, sometimes it’s much easier to have something ready-made for the littles. Convenience foods for dinner every now and then won’t hurt your kids, I promise! Hopefully this company sorts through some issues and listens to customer feedback because I would be interested in giving them a go

I love the idea of this and we tried them for a few weeks, but the kids only mildly liked some of the items. I ended up throwing away a lot of the food and to pay so much just to throw them away seemed too wasteful to me. I hope they get more options and get rid of the plastic dipping cups…they regularly busted in shipment and the kids didn’t like the sauce being all over the other food.

I’ve had good luck with Schwann’s foods, they deliver and run great deals. They do offer healthy options too. They carry a lot of precooked items that are convenient and they offer many choices that my kids like.

Call me old fashioned but a child needs to eat what is fixed for dinner. We ate what my mom cooked period.

Michelle,
Have you never cooked a pizza, chicken nuggets, grilled cheese for your kids instead of what you’re having?
We get McDonalds & Burger King when we’re having things for dinner that my son is allergic to. We also do it sometimes because he just doesn’t like what we’re having.

I guess you don’t buy Uncrustable PB&J sandwiches?

I make my child a separate meal every night. She’s autistic and doesn’t like most foods. I’d much rather make her food she’ll eat than have her starve over sensory issues. Hate to think what these kiddos went through in the “old days.”

Jamie,
I too have a child with autism And understand the struggle is real when your child can’t help but only eat certain foods. My son with ASD is also allergic to legumes and tree nuts. It’s very hard to get a child with sensory issuess to try anything new.
The “food groups” he eats from are more like the chicken nuggets, pizza, toast, cheez-it’s and fries food groups.

Anna

Call me a modern woman but mom shaming someone for using precooked foods for her convenience after having a baby seems unnecessary. It would seem unnecessary if she said she just didn’t want to cook too.

Karen

People are too sensitive nowadays, so now you are saying that she is mom shaming someone? Lol

AC

I think saying she’s “mom-shaming” is going a bit far. I do think that perhaps Michelle didn’t read the review fully, as the reviewer isn’t using these as an option for the kids to have instead of what she cooked. Though I do agree in a way – it irritates me when parents cook a separate meal for their children instead of making them eat what everyone else is eating (yes I’m a mom of an 8-year old, and yes, she eats what I cook, and yes, it’s a hassle almost every single night). That’s just my personal opinion, not being judgy-wudgy. I was raised the same way

I guess these are for little kids, because it would not work for my seven and 10 year olds.

Since I’ve read similar comments before I thought I’d post this from their website:

“Meals are intended for children ages twelve months to twelve years, and portion sizes reflect this. We recommend ordering more meals for the week if older children or adults will also be enjoying the meals too.”

It does seem a little odd that a 12 month old and 12 year old portion would be the same. 😕 They would definitely benefit from having two size options!
