The Better Beauty Box May 2018 Review
Instead of including a stand-alone info sheet, the information about the products in the box are on a sticker that’s placed on the lid of the box.
Priti NYC Nail Polish in Baby Blue Eyes, .43 oz - Retail Value $15
This is a really pretty blue creme nail polish that reminds me of classic denim blue jeans. I found the formula to be excellent, and this brand introduced me to the fact that most nail polishes aren't vegan (I am not a vegan, so that is not something I look for). Even being vegan, however, I question the $15 retail price. That price puts this polish in the same category as Butter London and Deborah Lippmann, and I just don't know if it belongs there.
GAB Cosmetics Eyeshadow Stack in Flip Flop, Seashells, and Sandcastle, -Retail Value $12
This cosmetics company was started by a 12-year-old who saw a need for makeup that was age appropriate and affordable for young girls. These eyeshadows are made with organic ingredients, and they all pack a lovely hint of sparkle. At first, I was a bit disappointed in the pigment of these eyeshadows, but I actually think the colors are perfect for the age group— if the purple was any darker I wouldn't have been allowed to wear it! I would recommend using a primer with these to increase the staying power, as the swatches wore off relatively quickly.
Pälish Dry Shampoo, 3 oz - Retail Value $14
I am not a dry shampoo user, but even if I was I believe I would be confused on how to apply this powder to my roots without making a mess or over-applying. Other than the awkward application, this dry shampoo is scentless and contains no artificial ingredients or unnatural preservatives. I think products like these would have been really helpful for when I was in middle school and the beginning of high school, where after gym class there wasn't time to shower but your hair was all sweaty.
Zatik Naturals Roll-On Deodorant in Orange & Vetiver, 3 oz - Retail Value $6
Baton Rouge has been in the 90’s lately with a lot of humidity, so while I find the scent of this deodorant refreshing I don't think I will be using it unless I am just going to be in my apartment. I used clinical strength antiperspirant once puberty hit in southern Arizona, so I don't know if 13-year-old me would have used this either.
ELF Artist Mixing Palette - Retail Value $2
When I first saw this I wasn't psyched about seeing a low-end drugstore brand, however, this product actually makes a lot of sense. Whenever I need to mix foundations to get the right color, I would always mix them on the back of my hand and then walk around with a big tan spot for the rest of the day. This is the perfect tool for avoiding that! I know when I was younger I wasn't getting color matched at Sephora, and I was guessing at the drugstore (and usually guessing very badly). This would have been great for combining all the wrong colored foundations to get a color that actually worked.
The Verdict: Objectively, this was another great month from The Better Beauty Box even if there were some personal misses for me. Including vegan and organic products work perfectly with the ingredient conscious theme TBBB works to provide, and I calculated a total value of $49, which is more than double the cost of the box.
The Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? If you sign up today your first box will be the June box.
Value Breakdown: This box costs $24 with free shipping, and I calculated a value of $49. That means you’re paying approximately the following for each item:
- Nail polish: $7.35
- Eyeshadow Stack: $5.88
- Dry Shampoo: $6.86
- Deodorant: $2.94
- Mixing Palette: $0.98
